hands for furries

which is your personal favourite?
(non displayed type of hands are also valid!)

I use the human style hand most of the type, but on some characters (i.e: Hexefoxen characters) I use some kinda more paw-like four fingered hand!  They're my favourite type of hands on furry characters!

The furry paw looks kinda cute.

I think it's weird for furries to have normal human hands ... when given the option I usually give them something closer to what the actual animal has, which for a lot of them is a paw - I try and keep the pawpads intact, and reduce the number of joints in each digit to two, but I generally stick with four fingers and a thumb. Three fingers just looks weird and alien to me. x3

Maybe it depends on style O: though I've never been able to make the 3 fingers+thumb thing look good with a "regular" hand.  Some people make it look good (i.e: Miu) , but I've never managed that.
Reducing the number of joints is an interesting thing!  I've never thought about it! :D

yeah, it helps keep it looking more like a paw with the shortened fingers 'n stuff. But yeah it's mostly a style thing. You don't really notice it on the Simpsons or whatever xD

I like hybrid hands usually.  Of course, being a dragon, scalies have pretty unique hand structure anyway :P

hybrid hands? O: do you have an example?

To repeat what I mentioned on skype for anyone else interested in the subject I believe it's dependent on the character and how human or animal they are intended to be. How human to animal a character is can change from picture to picture but its based on that. There is no right answer cause every character is different. That said my preference on characters is that they be more animal than human.

I don't really have a favourite. You shouldn't just pick on and stick with it, imo, variety makes your design game strong.

That,s a good way to see things!

I'd still prefer Option one. Since furries are people anthromorphed into animals.
now if you're an extreme furry, and want to be an animal, that's feral, and wants to sex other ferals, that'd be option 2, but I'm with option one, 24/7

I think the second hand on the drawing is more toward some kinda cartoon hand-paw thing than an actual paw o:

I like the middle choice. 5 stubby paw padded fingers with claws.

stubby is good

I do quite like option one myself, seems a lot more functional and expressive to me.

It's true that it allows for a lot more!

Well, the four fingers paw is more furry like but the one you draw has awfully short fingers. I really doubt that this hand could hold anything. I commission art on a regular basic and I must admit that event the one that use the four fingers model drew them with longer finger, kinda an hybrid between your two models.

I really like cute stubby fingers ahah
<: I guess it depends on style!

five fingered paws and sometimes it depends on the character there is also the paw hand hybrid

Paws are mostly what I'd choose

Yeah...The 4 fingered paw looks best for a anthro, then it would be too much human. You would have practically drawn a hybrid neko or something.

...but nekos aren't always that bad >.< <3 Shizuka Nekonome <3

So like more human hands on more human characters?
UlricSchwul

Yeah, or human-like, rather than animal-like; like a neko.

I like the humanish hand on the left, but with paw pads on them (or those little finger-hoofs for equines!) and/or claws to maintain that animalistic look ^_^
Saucy

I find it hard to fit pads on thinner fingers o: it's pretty hard to get it to look right!

I've always thought paws look better, though better still if you tweak the design to include expected species traits.

A mix of left and right

My fursona has an odd combination of both. His pinky is bat/human like attached to his bat wings while the rest is cat/paw like of the same length. Still 5 fingers though (including thumb).

i like them both and a combination of them to give variety. though i haven't played around with them yet

I use human shaped hands in most, if not all, of my art. Sometimes they're bigger and thicker, like my bison's hands, but they all still have the same human-like shape and stuff.

If the character is chibi or has a specific hand style I'll draw it but my own is the version on the left. C:

I like the paw hand, optionally with pawpads on the digits and palm. :3

IMO the left's more appropriate for human sized or realistically proportioned characters (which if done right can still look adorbs), the one on the right's for chibi/feral-ish chars.

That makes sense!

I dont have a prefference, as long as it suits the artists overall style. I draw more human like hands, large paw-like hands look weird with my style. or i just suck at it :P
SmallObsession

I usually do human-looking hands, and try to add some features like claws (and pads in most cases). I can't nail down the more paw-looking... look. However, when seeing drawings made by others, I usually prefer a more mixed hand/paw. Like Blotch's or Rukis' hand style (which is used by many artists, but those 2~3 artists are the best examples I can think at the top of my head). They are big, rough and they seem strong.

Though, even with that said, I'm okay with any style, as long they look good [unlike all of my fails when I started drawing heh ].
And just as AlaskaFox said, it's better when they fit the overall style. - My characters probably look better with the kind of hands I do. (yeah, I don't have anything uploaded here~ Maybe one day I'll use IB more and upload something)

Yeah I can't seem to get the whole human hand with animal things (pads and stuff) without them looking awkward!  I think it takes practice!
SmallObsession
9 years, 7 months ago
It's also matter of style! - *I* think it suits you best doing the hands you've been doing so far! Human hands, with some little claws every now and then - Adding pads sure looks awkward in some cases. They look cool in the more "rough" hand-style I mentioned earlier.

I prefer going more inbetween.

Some say furries are humans with animal characteristics.  Other's say furries are animals with human characteristics.

Me..I say furries are a blend of human and animal.  Going pure one way or the other..makes little sense.  Instead look at the animal of choice and ask..if this animal had appendages capable of grasping..of a wide range of dexterous movements, what would they look like?

So that'd be my answer..neither, instead a proper split..but that's just me :).

Humans are ugly - Furry paws are better, but the Furry paw you have drawn is way too stubby.
Saucy

I think human hands are prettier, more delicate looking.  Paws are mostly cute.  I like stubby fingers!
