I've been working on making some backlit conbadges for Klorsis, MadDog, and myself for when we go to Megaplex next weekend.  This is the prototype I've been drumming together.

this beats the hell out of mine, which is just a sketchy DIY of a cell phone backlight LED

Looking good! ^^ I had glowing con badges for myself and Ico Harbinger at RF 2013, but what we went with was printed art (on cardstock) on the front with holes cut out (via x-acto knife, though laser cutting would have been nice) mounted on EL panels for a nice, luminous glow. Never really got them nice and spiffy since it was more or less just a test run, and never really found a good solution on how to wear the AA battery packs, though.

I'd be interested to hear what you went with here. Looks like... LEDs and laser-cut acrylic?

One white LED settled into the tapered end of an acrylic mold before curing and a diffuser glued on the back with a translucent white surface on top.  So it's really just a single white LED and a light reflector.  Finish off the gaps with a narrow strip of reflective tape and the light has nowhere to go but through the translucent top.
