written by and copyright © 2011-2012 by Adilor Solthaer

A fox husky hybrid runs through a park full of other families, kept in close watch by her parents, who just smile and walk after her, holding hands. Her new sundress looks absolutely adorable on her, they both agree. Luckily she's out of range of their conversation, or she would put up such a fuss about the A word. What she does is make a beeline directly for the sandbox. It's the perfect thing to do in a brand new outfit. Into the sand she leaps, and then right up onto the jungle gym she goes, climbing her way towards the top. Before she reaches its peak, though, the whole structure rattles and shakes! Momentarily frightened, she clings on for dear life, until she realizes that it's no longer a collection of pipes. She's now in the cockpit of a spaceship! Worry overtakes her, but no sooner does she look around than she sees mommy and daddy piloting their own craft, blasting off through the atmosphere and waving her along. The big red flashing button catches her attention, and upon the push of a little paw, the craft lurches and rockets into the sky! Terror is nothing this cub knows, completely overwhelmed by the sheer thrill of launching into space. Soon they're whooshing past planets, and the ship's screen beeps to request attention: Panda Alert! Soon the object is visible, a massive planet, looking strikingly like a certain familiar red panda plushie. "Pandi!" she cries out happily, clapping her paws together, then reaches towards her favorite plush. Soon she's so close to it, and the spaceship is gone, leaving her to fall gracefully towards it until she flumps down onto its belly, hugging tightly close like she hasn't seen it in ages. Pandi's normally about her size, but this time so much bigger, and she definitely doesn't put up any complaints.

Bzzt. Bzzt. Bzzt. The annoying, pervasive sound wafts its way into the dream world. It starts out as a minor thing, but quickly grows into something much more startling and insistent, quickly dragging the fusky out of her slumber, just as it does every morning. She'd never be up on time to get ready for work if it weren't for the alarm, as hated as it is. She reaches over towards the beside table in search of the alarm, but her arm only finds more bed. She scoots towards the edge, still reaching, but still discovering only waves of sheets on an ocean of mattress. "Why is the bed so big?" she wonders to herself, scooting more towards the edge. Eventually she finds it, but still her arm won't reach the table. Finally opening her eyes, she comes to the startling revelation that everything is bigger...until she just sighs with exasperation, figuring she's still dreaming. Therefore, she simply lays there, waiting for the next awakening. Seconds tick by, turning into minutes, and still that alarm keeps going, getting progressively louder, as is its programming to do so. Before any other thoughts can go through her head, though, there's a sudden light flooding the room as the door opens. Blinded, she shuts her eyes tightly, and then the alarm is gone, leaving only a moment of silence before a familiar, vulpine voice speaks.

"Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry. I should've thought to turn the alarm off," he starts, watching her slowly open her eyes, and he can't help but chuckle at the absolutely bewildered look she gives him, seeing her fox much bigger than usual. "Yeah, you're probably really confused right now, wondering why everything looks so big, huh?" She nods simply in response, still not fully awake; everything definitely appears bigger to her. "I know. It's natural to expect it. Nobody ever isn't, unless they know what's coming beforehand. You're definitely not dreaming, of that much I can assure you." She just stares at him through half-lidded eyes, prompting another chuckle. "C'mon, let's get you up, and don't worry about the sheets. Do you remember what day it is?"

Abbey starts to look down at the sheets in question before she's whisked up into her fox's arms. He's so big now, she observes, also finding him more comfy. With no objections, she nestles into his chestfur, burying her muzzle under his chin, that posed question forgotten, at least for the moment. A low, quiet murr escapes her as the fox's paws rub up and down her back gently, calming her, preparing her for the explanation of what's going on. With her eyes closed, she doesn't notice that he's carrying her through the house, towards the kitchen.

"Now then, all this doesn't have to make a lot of sense, and trust me, some of it won't. Last night, I put something special in your dinner. It's not harmful, and has two very distinct effects, both of which have already run their course, and will last throughout the day. It's a very special day for you; do you remember what it is?"

As Adilor sets his fusky down in a kitchen chair, after instructing her not to open her eyes just yet, she shakes her head, having no clue what made this particular day so special. Within a few seconds, the prompt is made to open her eyes, and upon doing so, she gasps with delight, then gasps again with shock, clapping her paws over her muzzle. That gasp sounded far too high pitched to be hers, and she looks up to her fox with distinct worry and concern.

"You're still you, trust me. I'd hoped the mental half of it would be done by now, but it seems to always take longer to take full effect. You're just younger, is all. A lot younger, and I'm forgetting something quite important! Up we go, one thing we can't do without!" He hefts her up into his arms again, leaving her to look back wantingly at that delicious looking birthday cake with the colorful letter A candle on top. Back to the bedroom they go, where he lays her down on the bed on her back. "Hold right there for me, sweetie," he instructs, and within a moment, she hears an all too familiar noise, prompting quite the firm blush from the little fusky. "Aww, look at you already. Impossible to forget these, huh?"

She huffs and pouts as her rump lifts up, diaper sliding beneath, crinkling audibly as he positions it beneath her, then settles her atop it. "P-Pandi~" she whines out quietly, only surprised for a moment at the word that escapes her automatically.

Adilor facepalms. "Duh, how could I forget? I'm sorry hon...here he is~"

Her face brightens as the plush enters her view, and within a moment she has a deathgrip around Pandi's middle, not so much caring about the diapering anymore, though the scent of the powder wafting up does coax a happy sort of giggle from her. Soon it's taped up snugly, and she's being carried off back to the kitchen. By the time she's back in the same chair, she's already slightly wet, thus proving how essential it was.

"And now, for cake!" Adilor lights the candle on top, scooting it close so she can take a big breath to blow it out a moment later. "Good job! Didja make a wish?"

She nods and grins, opening up to talk about it, but is quickly shushed.

"Better not tell me what it was, or it won't come true, remember? Gotta keep it a secret," he explains, making a motion as if zipping his mouth shut.

Abbey giggles and nods, "Seecwet!" then zips her own mouth shut, showing that the mental portion of the regression was progressing nicely, if not already complete.

"Alright, good." He smiles, cutting her a piece. Of course, she opts out of using proper utensils, digging in with her paws and making a general mess. Adilor can't help but smile, watching his little girl enjoy herself as he eats his own bit of cake. Once they're both done, he helps clean her up with a wet washcloth. "Okay, done with cake, now what?" He doesn't have to wait long for the predictable answer.

"Wegos!" He could've bet money on her response.

"Well of course! First let's get you dressed a little bit, then you can play, okay?" She nods and is soon picked up by the fox, being carried off to the bedroom once again. He'd prepared well for this day, anticipating plenty of possibilities, including putting her in some cute clothing, which consists of light shortalls with flower patches on the front. Underneath goes a pastel pink tshirt, and he attaches to it the pacifier and clip, both Care Bears, an easy favorite.

"And we're done, little miss adorable," he teases slightly, earning another blush from her as she's taken back to the living room, where a big plastic container of Legos waits for her. They're the oversized ones, of course, perfect for little hands to work with, and much harder to swallow. She's soon busy building towers and castles and aircraft, among other things, structures and vehicles going up and being torn down around her like some sort of time lapse of a city, but with Legos. This leaves the fox free to do a little bit of housework, mostly in cleaning up the kitchen, occasionally peeking around the corner to see what else she's constructed or demolished. Sometimes she catches his gaze, giving a broad smile and maybe an energetic wave. What he doesn't expect, a few minutes later, is for Abbey to come scampering into the kitchen and suddenly latch onto his leg, looking up with big, frightened eyes.

"Heeeey, what's wrong?" She points back towards the living room and gives a fearful little whine. "Pider~"

"Ohh, well okay. Let's go see, c'mon." She's hoisted up into his arms once again, and mocking some fear of his own, he cautiously creeps to the corner to peek around at it with her, spying the arachnid high up on a wall. "Ooooh, there he is, yep. He's a big one alright."

Abbey's paws cling onto his shirt as she issues another whine, earning a reassuring pat between the ears. "Shh, it's okay. I'll take care of him; don't worry. You sit tight right here." He sets her down at the kitchen table, and she stands up in the chair, watching him fetch a glass and an index card. He tiptoes to the corner again, still making a show of it, turning to give her a confident look before slipping around the corner, out of sight.

Abbey watches, waits, her tail twitching back and forth anxiously. She hopes daddy is okay, doing battle with the fierce spider! She hears nothing for a few moments, then the sound of glass clinking against the wall. A few seconds later, the front door is opened, then closed, and her fox returns, giving her the victorious thumbs-up. She claps happily, waiting for him to stash the spider capturing implements before reaching up to him to be picked up once again. "Fankoo daddy~" she says, nosing up under his chin, clinging onto his shirt again.

"Aww, of course my little fusky." They move back to the living room, where he notices that she had toppled one of her bigger towers in the scramble to flee the deadly spider, but it's of no issue to Abbey at the moment; she's quite content to cling onto her fox. "Oops, I forgot one thing. Hang tight right here, sweetie; I'll be right back." He sets her down on the couch, and within a minute he's back from the kitchen, holding both arms behind his back as he stands in front of her. "Pick a paw."

She thinks hard for a moment. What were those words again? Right and left could be awfully hard to remember sometimes. Her inner thought process wasn't quite so elaborated, but soon she gives up, opting simply to point to his left energetically. Little fusky had chosen correctly, but for part of the game, he moves his prize to the right and shows the empty left paw. Very quickly she points to the right, grinning, thinking she's won, but he keeps the game on, similarly switching it to the left to show the right paw also empty. The response he gets is absolutely adorable; her ears flatten back, eyes widen, Abbey doing her best to pout and beg at him simultaneously. "Aww, but you're so close, try again!" She huffs and furrows her brow, as if focusing intently, trying to win the mental game. She points to his right again after a few tense seconds. Of course, the fox was going to let her win it at that point, producing a blue sippy cup, which is handed to her as he sits and settles her in his lap. Abbey giggles happily and latches onto it, soon discovering that it's been filled with apple juice. Adilor's next play in the book comes in, reaching for the remote to start the DVD of cartoons, more entertainment for the birthday fusky. She watches intently from his lap, still working on that juice, and once she's done, the fox takes the cup from her and replaces it with her clipped pacifier, which is happily accepted into her muzzle. Not even halfway through the next cartoon, she shifts sideways and rests her head against his chest, eyes sliding closed. Naptime.

She awakens a couple hours later, finding herself wrapped in a blanket with Pandi next to her. She latches onto the plush and cuddles it for a couple minutes before slipping off the couch, Pandi in tow, going in search of her fox. Adilor is soon located, a stream of light from the open bedroom door giving him away; she giggles as she pushes it open and catches sight of his bare behind for a moment as he's pulling on his slacks. He turns and smiles at her. "Well hi there little one. Come to spy on me, huh?" He winks and ruffles between her ears, hoisting her up to sit on the bed. "Well, your ever forgetful fox completely blanked on the fact that he has a business dinner tonight until just about half an hour ago, so it looks like we're going out to eat. Shame, too, 'cause I was gonna make spaghetti for you. Sit tight, sweetie, I've a few more things to get ready." She does just that, sitting and watching him bustle about the room, throwing clothes on and making himself look professional, locating his briefcase to make sure he has the necessary papers.

"Alright, next thing, let's get you changed. I'm sure you're pretty soaked from that juice." Predictably, she huffs at him, but he's right; the juice had gone right through her. "Arms up." She complies, letting him undress her, and then she's laid back on the bed, squirming as the wet diaper is untaped and cool wipes whisked over her fur. A happy wag issues from her as the smell of fresh powder wafts up again, once dry padding is placed under her butt and taped up snugly. He then sits next to her, grabbing a fur brush. "Okay then, let's get you looking pretty as well, huh?" Abbey tries not to wriggle about too much as she's brushed, the fox straightening out her fur as best he can, tying a pink bow into her headfur once he's done. "And for the final piece, to make you the most beautiful little fusky in the place tonight. Arms up again sweetie." He produces a nice yellow sundress, strikingly similar to the one from her dream that started the whole day, and soon it's fitted onto her. "Alright, let's get going. Luckily the place is just a couple blocks down, 'cause I don't have a carseat for you. That's something I hadn't anticipated. Wanna walk or should I carry you?"

She toddles over to where she can look at herself in the mirror for a moment, then looks back to him. "I walk," she articulates masterfully, and Adilor smiles. "Well okay then, little miss confident, we're off." Paw in paw, briefcase carried in the other, tails swishing almost in unison, they walk their way down to the restaurant, just a short few minutes away.

Once there, the waiter leads them to the able at which his work associates already sit. "Mack, Riggs, this is my wife's sister's cousin's kid. Same name, crazy enough. I volunteered for babysitting duty today before remembering we had this meeting, but I didn't think it'd be any trouble bringing her along. Abigaile, these are my work buddies, Mackford and Riggsi," he says, gesturing to the ferret and orca in turn. She's soon seated in her booster, blushing and smiling shyly from the introduction, waving a paw at them.

"Well she's certainly adorable, Ad," Riggs remarks. "Ah, menus, right on time. I'm starving!" The adults scan through the options, while Abbey gets a colorful kids' menu, with big pictures to accompany the words. Eventually she tugs on Adilor's sleeve and points to the menu once she has his attention.

"Chicken strips for you, huh? Sure can do." The waiter comes back around soon enough to take their orders. "Oh, and can I get some crayons for my little girl here?" It comes out just slightly too quickly for him to think about the words, but luckily his associates don't pick up on it, as they're already busy pulling out papers to discuss business. The crayons come back quickly, allowing Abbey to distract herself with doodling on the other side of the kits' menu. "Okay, let's talk shop. I've got some sales data I think you two will be quite interested to see," the fox opens up, getting his own papers out.

Dinner comes around soon enough, just as Abbey is finishing a drawing of an octopus with a different color for each arm. "Hey cool! What's his name?" Abbey looks up at Mack, blushing as she's blindsided by the question, giving a slight little shrug in response. Adilor fuzzles between her ears, clearing crayons out of the space so her food can be set down in front of her. "Oh, you're so shy it's adorable. Don't worry, we'll give you time to think about it, okay?" She nods energetically before attacking her food with moderate voracity, earning a round of chuckles from the adults. "She's a great little kid, really."

Riggs nods as he surveys his plate of shrimp linguine, making it tough to discern what he was nodding at, for a moment, until he responds, "Y'ever think about having one of your own?"

Adilor looks over at her, pondering the response. Abbey herself hadn't noticed the question, busy gnawing on a chicken strip, and he gives the most accurate response possible. "Budget, Riggs, budget, but you know, if this presentation goes over with the boss well on Tuesday, maybe we can get that raise~"

"Hear hear!" Mack chimes in, already carving into his prime rib steak, and soon the table is quiet, everyone focused on their food. The rest of the meeting goes over in a relaxed fashion, and it's a wide yawn and stretch from Abbey that signals the end, followed by a look up at her fox that says, "I'm bored, I wanna go home."

"Yep, I think she's done," he states, using a napkin to help her clean a bit of ketchup off her muzzle. "Well guys, I think we've got a solid plan for this. I'm off Monday, but I'll call you two to finalize some stuff. Gonna get this one home for a bath before it gets too late."

"Alright Ad, good seeing ya, and it's nice meeting you, Abigaile," Riggs says with a smile to her, prompting yet another little fusky blush and giggle as she's hoisted up by her fox. "Hey Mack, you got this, right?"

"No way, Riggs, this was your turn. I'll prove it, even," he retorts, digging in his briefcase. The fox chuckles to himself, leaving the two to argue over the check.

Halfway home, Abbey squirms and shifts in his arms, whining quietly. "What's up, hon?" Adilor asks, not having to wait long for an answer as her ears fold back, and she grunts quietly, shutting her eyes as her own business is made in the seat of her diaper. "Ohh, yep, that'd be cause for squirming, huh?" She whines up at him in protest, earning a smooch to her nose. "Shh, it's okay. All part of the package, sweetie. Don't worry, we're almost home, and it's gonna be bath time." She nods to him and buries her muzzle into his neckfur, still embarrassed about it the whole way home.

Adilor wastes no time in starting the bath water, squeezing in a very liberal amount of lavender scented bubble bath, and then to the bedroom he goes, laying Abbey on the bed after undressing her once again. He hums a little tune to her as he works, untaping the used padding and tossing it accurately into the garbage can after using several wipes to clean her bottom. "Aaaaaand, fusky plane go!" Suddenly she's hoisted up into the air as he does a couple laps around the house; she holds her limbs out to imitate a plane as best the can, making noises that sound more like a motorboat, but it's close enough, really. "Oh no, we're gonna crash!" He detours into the bathroom, making just a bit of a splash as he deposits her into the ready tub. "Saved by the bathtub!" Abbey giggles and wags about, and it doesn't take her long to start doing creative things with the bubbles, including giving her fox a lopsided beard. "You are highly silly, y'know that?" She sticks her tongue out at him. "Oh, I even got bath toys, hold on." He returns a few moments later, dropping a trio of boats, a couple fish, and a stereotypical yellow rubber duck in for her, which are quickly involved into an epic battle of machine versus animal. The motorboat noises return, along with plenty of quacking. As Adilor reaches for a washcloth, she holds up a fish at him. "Fishie!"

"That's right, and what sound does a fishie make?"

She thinks hard. It's a really tough question, but her answer is strikingly accurate. "Fishie dun haf sound, dey just go like dis," and she does her best fish face impression.

"That's absolutely right," he acknowledges, leaning in to start washing through her fur with the cloth, doing his best not to interrupt the game. He rubs about under the water, little fusky giggling and squirming about ticklishly when he cleans at her footpaws, and again when he reaches her underarms. "Almost done, eyes closed," he instructs, gently cleaning at her face and ears. "All finished, wanna pull the plug for me?" She reaches under for it and tugs, giggling at the gurgling noises that follow. "Silly tub noises, huh? Stand up for me, time to get you dried off." She does so, holding still as best she can while she's toweled at, and once mostly dry, he produces a sunny yellow bathrobe that's just her size, helping her wrap up in it, then she's carried off to the bedroom, where they sit on the bed, Abbey snuggled close in her fox's lap.

"So, just so you know, it's only a one day formula. You might already be getting some of your mental cognizance back, and you'll be back to normal physically when you wake up." She nods in response, at least understanding part of the statement, enough that the point gets across. "I've got a few more, enough for six more days, so we can definitely do this again sometime, possibly the other way around." He winks and smooches at her gently, earning an affectionate kiss back and a tight, squeezy hug. "Wuffoo Addy~" she says, resting against his chest, and he smiles brightly. "I love you too, my sweet little Abigaile. Did you enjoy your birthday?" She nods up at him enthusiastically. "Well good, I'm glad you did. I've got one more little surprise, too." He reaches out of sight for just a moment, producing a storybook. "Bedtime story! This one's called '47 Cows on the Moon', and it's kinda silly, but I think you'll like it." The title made her laugh, as did the cover art, showing just that, a bunch of cows on the moon engaged in various activities, such as mowing the lawn or skydiving. The fox took a moment to lay back and get comfy, little fusky stretched out beside him, with the book laid flat so both could look at it. "On a warm summer night, little Jimmy was looking at the moon through his telescope. That night, he saw something that he had never seen before. There were cows on the moon."

She almost couldn't stop giggling through the whole story; it was unbelievably silly, including descriptions of how cows played volleyball, and a debate on which kind of juice was best. She thought they should have picked apple instead of grape. As Adilor finishes up the last page, she perfectly times a yawn. "Oh yes, definitely bedtime for one little fusky. You've had such a big day, huh?" Abbey smiles and nods up at him, already looking quite sleepy. "Okay, let's get you tucked in." He pulls up the covers, letting her slide under, then tugs 'em up to just below her chin. "Goodnight my dear Abbey. I'm gonna go get a little bit more work done, so I'll be a little while. You go ahead and sleep."

"Otays, nini Addy, wuvoo~"

"Hee, I love you too sweetness, forever and ever." He leans down, smooching gently at her forehead as she closes her eyes. As he walks out of the bedroom, he hears her say quietly, "Best birfday ever~" bringing the best grin of the day to his face. He returns about an hour later to find her burrowed under the covers, curled into a ball in the rough center of the bed. "Always adorable," he whispers, doing his best to be quiet as he settles in next to her. He's not sure whether he woke her, but regardless, she shifts and moves, curling up against him instead, muzzle burying under his chin, one paw gripping gently at his chestfur as he too drifts off to sleep, snuggled up against his love. The gradual change back to her normal physical stature would begin eventually, changing her back slowly to her former self, and not likely to wake either of them through the night. The memories of that fantastic day, though, would remain fresh in her mind, and she would definitely treasure them for years to come.
