Kaleb smiled as he circled the table. He gave the android shell one final look over, more marveling on the machine than actually looking for defects. “We finally completed him. Years of work have finally come to the final stages.” He said looking up at his partner in this endeavor.
The fox smiled looking up from the connections from the mainframe to the body. His mechanical prosthetic eye adjusted with a slight whirr. His self designed bio-mechanical arm was twirling the screwdriver he was using to adjust the attachments. “Was there really any doubt? If I can build a fully and perfectly operational eye and arm, how much harder is the whole body?” The 18 year old fox chuckled and walked over to the table. “Truly beautiful though” He said referring to the android.
On the table laid a still inactive android body. It was modeled after the 26 year old otter that started and funded the project with a notably different face so as to tell them apart later. Its fur was silver for the time being, but once active could change to any color the android needed. Its joints were perfect replicas of those in bipedal beings; it would be able to walk and maneuver indistinguishably from biological creatures. It was even installed with true to form genitalia, unable to reproduce only from lack of DNA. He would be as close to a living being as could possibly be achieved.
“Well I think it is time to join mind and body Lucas” Kaleb smiled and opened the android’s chest cavity exposing the true masterpiece of the creation. Inside were processing systems that put a super computer to shame. The array of processors, sensors, gyroscopes, cameras, microphones, and speakers that filled the metal body could simulate virtually any basic process that biological beings did. It even contained a venting system to simulate breathing, and a tubing system to fake eating and drinking. The only gap was for the super capacity battery. Kaleb carefully lowered it in place as Lucas wired it in.
Walking to the computer interface on the wall Kaleb initiated the starting procedures. One by one all of the systems started to activate. The petabyte hard drives, all three 100 terahertz processors, and the hybrid liquid-air cooling system whirred to life. “Good, looks like everything engaged.” He said turning back to the screen. He slowly went through testing all components, everything from ear twitches to the flexing of the toes. He twitched each servo to make sure they were wired in correctly. Lucas kept watch reporting as they were all tested.
“That is everything, time to load KAIN” Kaleb said with a smile. Opening the file transfer program, the otter started the upload of KAIN.OS to the android. KAIN was Kaleb’s brain child in more ways than one. Komputer Artificial Intelligence Network was the world’s first sentient computer program. He was made from a modified personality map of Kaleb. While he started with learning basic challenges and logic problems, KAIN slowly developed much like a biological child. With some added tweaking, KAIN even started to recognize and exhibit emotions, albeit to a limited extent. A special copy was written with the control protocols for the body and now the mind would finally be given a body.
The two watched the upload for the hours it took to transfer a copy of an entire intelligent consciousness into the robotic body. But soon the task was competed and the software started to boot in the body. The face moved from a sleeping expression to curious one, the eyes glancing around. “Wow. So this is what a body feels like.” The android stated as he fully initialized. He used the servos to close the chest plate as he sat up. So far the control systems seemed to be functional as Kain turned to drape his new legs over the side of the table.
“Yes, and it would seem you are adjusting quite nicely” Kaleb smiled a tear running down his cheek from seeing his life’s work operating far beyond expectations. “Can you stand?” He asked wondering if it would be like teaching an infant to walk.
“I believe so sir” He slipped off the table planting his feet on the floor. Kain used the table to balance as he registered the reading from the gyroscopes, servos, and sensors. Within seconds he was on his feet unassisted. “Why are you crying sir? Do I not meet your expectations?” He asked knowing that tears more commonly came with sadness and disappointment.
“No, you far exceed my hopes” Kaleb sniffled and smiled. “I expected this to be a slow process even after the boot up, but you are adapting even faster than biologicals can.” He walked forward and hugged the droid.
Kain recognized the gesture, and wrapped his arms around his programmer and de facto father. The pressure sensors telling him went to stop squeezing. “I am…happy… that I function properly. You programmed me well.” He smiled trying to use what he learned from watching biological interactions. He looked to Lucas, who was sitting in a nearby chair struck with awe of his creations rapid adaptation. “And I believe I am to be grateful to you. You helped design and build my new body.”
“Yeah…I was just helping Kaleb.” He said amazed to be talking to an android.
“Kaleb, just as a point of information, should I be wearing some sort over covering?” He asked denoting that fact that he naked. He let go of Kaleb looked around.
Kaleb stepped back and looked at the droid. “Yeah I suppose modesty is still an issue.” He smiled and walked over to a locker and pulled out a long lab coat. “This’ll work till I can get you some clothes.”
“Thank you sir” Kain walked over to take the coat. He was a bit shaky for a few steps but quickly adjusted to the motion and balance. He pulled on the white coat and buttoned up to hide his nether region.
“Well let’s show you to the others.” Kaleb smiled and led the android to the door, feeling like a new mother showing her cub to the family.
