the stone on the staff looks a bit like an Easter Egg, but I somehow don't think that's what you were talking about. The staff however looks similar to a staff of Resurrection from a first generation Dungeons and Dragons guide. If this is the case then Makklius is a mage of the school of life whom are one of the few groups that can use it. If this is the case then he also isn't following that evil guy either.

A couple readers found the easter egg...both of them MLP fans. On Makklius' purple cloak, there is a drawing of a googly-eyed pony named Derpy Hooves. His "cutie mark" is a batch of bubbles, located next to the face. Concerning the staff, i do not follow the d&d universe, therefore i dont know too much about it. I created the staff just to show he is a mage. You are right, he doesn't quite follow the evil Koschei, but he has to do his bidding to keep the chupacabra happy.
