A Strange Costume

“Oh, come on!” Max cried in exasperation. “You mean I’m the only one who DOESN’T have a costume yet?”

“Seems like it,” Joel responded as they travelled down the mall’s corridor. “And I’m honestly surprised with you, Max. I would have thought you’d have been the first one to get a costume. Especially considering the Halloween party’s tomorrow.”

Max sighed. “I wasn’t really thinking about it,” he admitted. It was really odd – Halloween was probably his favourite time of year, so not getting a costume before now was pretty embarrassing for him. Especially seeing as how his friend Joel, who was usually apathetic towards special events, had already prepared himself for the party tomorrow.

“Seriously, Maxwell?” Joel asked. “That’s not like you.”

“I know it isn’t,” Max responded, grimacing. “I guess I was spending way too much time playing video games for me to think about it. And you know I hate people calling me ‘Maxwell,’ Joel.”

“Hey, you know I was just kidding,” said Joel, and he was silent for a while.

They continued to walk through the mall, looking everywhere for a possible costume store. But unfortunately, they were finding only stores with crappy products, or places that were completely sold out. Max sighed, shaking his head full of messy black hair. “It’s looking increasingly like we won’t be able to find anything,” he mumbled.

Joel turned his head to Max again. “Don’t you have any old costumes or… those suits… you could wear?” He inquired. “I thought you would have, considering how you’re…”

“Shh!” Max shushed Joel. “I told you not to say anything about that in public!”

Joel smirked at his friend. “Oh, right,” he said. “Of course, I’d be embarrassed too, if it was me.”

Max grumbled to himself. Joel was a great friend, but ever since he found out that Max was a furry, about a year ago, Joel really couldn’t let it go. Although he never seemed hostile or unfriendly, he would constantly make fun of Max for it. Max was fine with this ribbing at first, but it quickly ceased to be funny and just became irritating. Thankfully, Joel didn’t do it as much anymore, but still…

“And no, I’ve never had one of those fursuits,” Max quietly explained. “There’s never been one that interested me, and they’re way too expensive.”

Joel just nodded as they kept walking. After a few minutes, he asked, “Well, why not make your own costume? I mean… I know you like those Sonic games. I saw a girl with a homemade Knuckles costume last year. You could do something like that.”

Max let out a sputtered laugh. “Me? Make my own costume?” he said dismissively. “Yeah right, Joel. You know I’ve never been good with my hands. I couldn’t create anything that would look even halfway decent.”

“Just a suggestion,” said Joel in a defensive tone. “After all, you seem desperate enough to…” Joel was suddenly silent, and he stopped in his tracks, looking right past Max and behind him.

Max gave Joel a concerned look. “Hey, Joel, You okay man?” he inquired. “What’s wrong?”

Joel pointed in the direction he was looking. “Do… do you remember that store being there before?” he asked.

Max turned around. Behind him was a small store in the mall. The outside decorated with a rustic-theme, a large sign over the entrance reading “Costume Cabin.” Max raised an eyebrow. “No I don’t,” he admitted. “But it’s been a while since I’ve been to this mall. Maybe it opened recently.”

“Possibly,” said Joel. “Still… I don’t know about it.”

“Let’s check it out,” said Max, walking towards it. “They might actually have a decent costume in here.”

Joel paused for a second before following Max. “If you’re sure,” he muttered.

Upon entering the store, Max’s first impressions of the place were less than encouraging. It didn’t look like whoever owned the place knew much about decorating – it was just a bland wooden-cabin theme. Max doubted that it even was a theme, and that the owner just kept it the way it was when he bought it. Worse yet, as Joel entered the store, Max noticed that there was almost nothing left for sale from what he could see – just some more crappy props he had been seeing everywhere. It looked like the store branched out a bit more, as there were doorways beside the counter, but they seemed pretty bare as well.

“Damn,” said. “Well, I guess we tried.”

“Yeah,” Max mumbled, feeling quite depressed. “I suppose I’ll have to go without a costume this year…”

The two were about to leave when Max suddenly heard a voice say, “Can I help you?” He stopped in his tracks and spun around, looking for whoever had spoken.

Behind the counter was a man, dressed neatly but casually. A simple button shirt and a pair of slacks adorned him, and his short chestnut hair had a bit of a wave to it. A short goatee could be seen on his face, and Max couldn’t help but feel a bit uneasy – this man seemed to be the owner of the shop, yet he couldn’t be older than his mid 20’s. Most shop owners tended to be in their early 30’s at the least.

“Uh, yeah,” Max managed to say. “I had put off looking for a Halloween costume, and I’ve been doing some last-minute shopping the past day for one to no luck. And sorry for saying it, but it doesn’t look like you’ve got much left, either.”

The man behind the counter looked at Max for a second in an odd way – his level of discomfort started to increase. But suddenly, the tension in the man’s face dropped, and he smiled. “Why, not at all,” he said in a cheerful manner. “While it’s true that most of the regular merchandise is sold out, there are plenty of costumes left in the special section.”

Max could feel his heart skip a beat, while Joel suddenly realized that they might have actually found something. “You… you mean it?!” Max asked.

“I do,” the man replied. “The special section, as I call it, has a large variety of costumes – classics, popular outfits, and tons from various forms of media as well. Most of them custom-made, all very high quality, and all for about the same price as you could purchase my regular things.”

Hearing this was music to Max’s ears. “Could I check out this special section?” he asked, the eagerness very clear in his voice.

“Of course,” the man replied. “I just need your name.”

“It’s Maxwell, although I prefer Max,” he stated. “And this is my buddy Joel – he’s just accompanying me for now.”

“Hey,” Joel said casually.

“And call me Clarence,” the man introduced himself. “It’s a last name, of course, but enough with the formalities. The special section is just through this door,” he said, pointing at the opening to the left of the counter. “Feel free to look as long as you like, and let me know if you’ve found something.”

“Thank you!” said Max, and he quickly headed through the doorway, a huge grin on his face.

Clarence watched Max go through, and then he turned to Joel. “You know, even if you’re not planning on buying anything, you can go with him too,” he said. “I bet it would be better than just standing around.”

Joel looked a bit surprised. “Oh,” he said, heading towards the door. “Thanks, Mr… Clarence, was it?”

Clarence nodded, and Joel followed after Max. Clarence smiled – the two of them seemed like they would be perfect for his special costumes. It was a pity, he thought, that Max’s friend didn’t seem interested, but beggars can’t be choosers, he reasoned. He waited at the counter.

As Max travelled through what he perceived as the special section, he couldn’t help but feel confused – the “special” section was huge! There had to be dozens of little side corridors, each seeming to have costumes of a different theme. Max wasn’t sure how it was possible that this little store could have this much space inside. Yet as he walked further, something caught his eye. “No… it couldn’t be,” he quietly said to himself. Quickly, he ran to one of the corridors to confirm what he saw.

Upon arriving at the targeted corridor, Max’s jaw dropped in amazement. “It is,” he whispered, and a small smile began to creep up his face – there was a corridor reserved for Sonic-based costumes. Being a fan of the series for years, he had always wanted a costume of one of the characters. Unfortunately, he could never find one that looked even halfway decent – until now, that is.

He inspected the Sonic costume that hung prominently near the entrance to the corridor. It seemed to be made of high-quality latex, and with a bit of testing he noted that it stretched quite easily. Yet it was pretty small – the costume was only a little larger than half of Max’s height. It seemed to be closer to what Sonic’s height would be if he was real – was the costume supposed to be for a little kid?

Sighing in disappointment, he started to place the costume back when he noticed a little sign right outside the corridor. It read, “One size fits all. If a costume looks like it may be too small, it can easily stretch to your size. Full refunds are available if the costume is too uncomfortable.”

Max was surprised when he saw this sign – yes, the costumes were quite stretchy, but could these 3-foot things really stretch to accommodate him at 5’10”? Still a little perplexed, he let go of the Sonic costume – it wasn’t really what he was looking for, anyways. But he continued to look through the section, thinking there would be a costume that appealed to him somewhere.

No sooner had he started to search when Max suddenly paused – a costume had caught his eye. There was no mistaking it – the light orange sheen of the costume’s arm, the sandal-adorned feet, the golden jewellery, the tribal-style clothing – it was a costume of Tikal the Echidna. Max felt a little odd – Sonic Adventure was his favourite game, and Tikal was by far his favourite character. He loved her innocent, peaceful nature, and this costume was extremely well-made – yet, did he really want to go to the party as her?

After thinking about it for a while, Max grabbed the costume. He reasoned that with how well made it was, no one would know it was him inside it – except maybe Joel, of course, but still. Even if it wasn’t appropriate for the party, when would he ever find another costume of his favourite Sonic character of this quality again?

Carefully taking the costume off the rack, Max began to head back to the counter, but was suddenly stopped. Joel had arrived right in front of him. His friend took one look at the costume in Max’s arms and said, “Seriously, Max?”

“Yes, I am,” Max replied. “And I really don’t care what you think.”

Joel sighed. “Whatever, man,” he said. “You’ve got your costume now… seriously, a female Sonic character… let’s get going.”

Arriving back at the counter, Joel checked the time while Max brought the costume up to the register. Clarence smiled when he saw the costume Max had chosen. “Ah, a Sonic the Hedgehog fan I see?” he asked. “I used to be a fan as well.”

Max looked stunned. “Really?”

Clarence just nodded. “Of course, I haven’t had much free time in recent years, but I still have fond memories,” the shopkeeper explained, ringing up the costume. “Let’s see… that’ll be $34.95.”

In most cases, Max probably wouldn’t have believed a price that expensive for a costume, but with how well-made this one was, he almost found it a steal. He quickly paid Clarence the cost, saying, “Thank you so much.”

“It was my pleasure, Maxwell,” Clarence responded, and Max flinched at hearing his full name used. Clarence neatly folded the costume and placed it in a box, handing it to Max. “I hope you’ll recommend my store to any friends of yours?” he asked.

“Of course,” Max promised. With that, he and Joel left the store, Max feeling completely satisfied with himself. Content with the sale, Clarence headed into the doorway on the right.

***

It was several hours, when Max was at his home by himself, before he finally took the time to look at his purchase more closely. Even though Joel was trustworthy enough to keep a secret, he would still probably berate Max for his choice. Sighing, Max placed the box down on his bed and took the lid off.

Inside, just on top of the costume he had bought, was a sheet of paper Max hadn’t seen before. Raising an eyebrow, Max picked it up and read it. They seemed to be directions of some kind, but they were fairly non-descriptive.

To wear your costume, it said, follow these steps. First, you must remove your clothes before wearing this costume. Excess clothing will make the clothing uncomfortable and unfitting. Secondly, depending on your costume, there should be a seam either in the neck, front or back for entrance; use this to put on your costume. Finally, to remove your costume, you must relax and feel for the seam. When you find it, simply pull, and your costume should come off.

“Huh,” Max said to himself. “Does wearing a costume like this really need instructions? And why are they so non-descript? And why do I have to take off my clothes for this?”

There was no one around to answer these questions, of course. Max shrugged and took the costume out of the box. As he unfolded it out on his bed, he couldn’t help but admire the costume’s form – it helped him remember exactly why he loved Tikal so much. He also noticed that the clothes of the costume were actually separate from the costume itself – Max wondered how they managed to not slip off of the empty costume. And he still couldn’t figure out how it was supposed to stretch when it was only about half his size.

Deciding that he might as well try the costume on, Max started to strip down. Tossing aside his shirt and pulling down his jeans, socks, and boxers, he stood there in the middle of his room, completely nude. He was silently thankful that he waited until he was alone to try the Tikal costume on. Taking a deep breath, he picked up the costume – he found the seam easily, along the back. He had to lift Tikal’s top a bit to fully open it, but soon it was ready. However, before he started to put it on, something inside caught his eye.

Right within the costume, near the seam Max had opened, was what looked like a slip of paper. Curious, he pulled it out and looked at it. The slip was small and square, like a sticky note without the adhesive. The only thing written on it was “F. Ex.” Matt was really confused – what the hell did this thing mean? Thinking nothing of it, he tossed the slip aside, and he began to slip his left foot into the costume.

Clarence was smiling to himself. He had sold one of his “special” costumes today, and to someone who would’ve really wanted it. If there was one thing he took pride in, it was being able to make others happier. The storekeeper was checking out his back room, and after making sure everything was in order, he opened another door to a darker chamber.

Turning the lights on revealed many more costumes, dozens in fact, although not nearly as many as he had for sale. Clarence frowned at these – he considered them his failed experiments, costumes that were quite… troublesome was the word he liked to use, although it was quite an understatement. Looking in one corner, he came across a second Tikal costume.

Clarence remembered it – it was one of the first costumes he had made, and it pained him to think it had turned out a failure. But he was glad to have been able to make a suitable Tikal costume, and better yet, that he was able to sell it. However, despite being ashamed of his failed costumes, Clarence would often check on them, to make sure nothing else was going wrong.

The storekeeper opened up the Tikal costume to inspect the inside, when suddenly he stopped. There was something wrong with it, but he couldn’t figure out what it was. He stroked his goatee as he thought about this, when suddenly it hit him – there was no slip. All of his failed costumes had a slip of paper inside of them marking them as failed experiments. But then that would mean…

“Oh, no,” Clarence muttered to himself. “Did I sell Max the failed costume?!”

As Max stuck his foot into the Tikal costume, he wiggled to try and match it up with the foot of the costume’s. It was a strange feeling – the latex of the costume was smooth, and his foot slid in easily. Max chuckled nervously as he put his other foot in, and soon, he had both feet inside of those of the Tikal costume. But before he could start to pull the rest of it up, he suddenly felt the latex costume tighten around his legs.

“What the?!” Max cried out, and he tried to pull the costume off. Unfortunately, his efforts only led to the latex tightening even further. Worse yet, to his utter horror, it looked like the costume was actually moving itself up his legs. Nothing he did could stop it from engulfing his legs.

It was then that Max felt what was probably the oddest sensation of his life. As the latex material squeezed tightly against his legs, he thought he could feel his legs getting shorter, as if to match with the costume’s actual size. Then, suddenly, he couldn’t feel the latex around his lower legs any more – instead, he felt the soles of Tikal’s sandals underneath his feet, and the many bandage-like straps securing them in place. But looking down, Max still saw the costume’s legs – they just looked different. Nervously, he reached down and touched one of his legs, and what he felt absolutely shocked him. Instead of the smooth latex of the costume, he felt a warm, fine layer of fur, and his leg could feel the touch completely. Somehow, the costume had fused with his legs.

Max started to panic right then – the costume was changing him! He didn’t pay for this! But once again, his efforts to take the Tikal costume off were futile, as it just traveled even further up his legs, and tightening even more. Max eventually realized the futility of his efforts, but he was still frightened by the whole ordeal.

The costume had changed most of his legs by now, and Max was now much shorter than he used to be. Meanwhile, he was dangerously close to hyperventilating. “This… this costume,” he said to himself. “It’s… it’s turning me into Tikal.” He really wasn’t sure what to think about this. On one hand, it had meant that shopkeeper hadn’t told him everything about his costumes, that his perception on reality was permanently screwed up, and that it seemed he was about to lose his humanity… and gender. But on the other hand, this could possibly be his only opportunity to know what it was like to be his favourite Sonic character…

Eventually, Max gave up. Thinking that he would just hope for the best, he stopped struggling with the costume. The moment he did, it seemed to crawl itself up his body more quickly than before. In fact, the entirety of the costume’s torso stretched up to his, and his arms were taken into the costume’s. “This is gonna be really weird,” Max reasoned to himself, “but it looks like I don’t have any choice. Besides… being Tikal might not be so bad.”

The moment he said this, he felt the costume tighten around his body. To say it was uncomfortable would be an understatement, and it was even a little painful as his body shrunk a little more. And then, it started to fuse. His hands increased in size as the merged with the costume, soon fusing together underneath Tikal’s gloves. The rest of his arms did the same, becoming slimmer and fusing with the costume.

When it hit his torso, he felt his chest puff out a tiny bit into two small, developing breasts before they too fused with the costume, underneath Tikal’s white top. There was a bit of discomfort as he felt his spine extend into the costume’s zigzag tail, and soon it fused, too – the tail was his. He gasped for a moment as he felt his genitals push themselves into his body and start reforming – as his lower regions underneath Tikal’s skirt fused with the costume, he felt a slit opening up where his penis used to be, confirming the loss of his manhood.

Max was now only a bit more than three feet tall, but there was one thing left. He gulped and crossed his fingers as the costume’s mask pulled itself over his head. The moment it did, he grunted in pain – he could feel his head growing and extending to match up with the mask. His hair and bits of his head growing into dreadlocks, his skull and eyes growing much bigger, and his nose and lower face were extending out into a muzzle. For a brief moment, Max could feel every part of his head touching the costume, and the next, the feeling disappeared – all he could feel was a band across his forehead.

She was almost too scared to open her eyes, but eventually, Max did just that. The first thing she did was look down at her new body. Max gasped as she looked at her large, gloved hands, her tribal-style outfit, her furry body and, the most shocking of all, her tail. As she felt her new muzzle, Max whispered, “My God… I’ve really turned into Tikal!”

Max quickly put her hands over her mouth as she heard herself – her voice had become much higher from her transformation. Still, it was one of the strangest things she had ever experienced, being a small, female, human-like echidna. Wondering exactly what she looked like, Max walked out of her bedroom and into the bathroom. She stumbled a little bit as she entered the darkened room – her new body was a little disorienting. She flipped on the lights and looked into the sink mirror.

Max was stunned by her reflection, despite the fact that she expected it; she was still in complete awe to see a perfect replica of Tikal’s reflection staring back. Her large eyes were a beautiful shade of blue, and the eyelashes were long and pretty. A gold headband sat atop her forehead, and the light-orange shade of her fur nicely complimented her peach muzzle. Max touched the edge of her nose lightly, finding that it tickled a little bit.

After a few minutes, Max smiled. “You know, it doesn’t actually feel that bad,” she said out loud, watching her reflection mouth her words back. “It’s a little strange, yes, but being Tikal makes me feel… content, I suppose. I’m not even sure why.” Still smiling, she turned off the lights and headed back to her room.

Upon arriving at her room, Max sat on her bed and thought. “I think I probably will wear this to the party tomorrow,” she said. “Joel will be the only one who MIGHT even be able to tell it’s me. But still… will I even be able to get this thing off?” As she pondered this, her eyes fell on the instruction sheet she had tossed aside earlier. Remembering that there was something on it explaining how to remove the costume, Max quickly grabbed and re-read it.

As her eyes scanned the paper, she smiled again. “I just have to relax and feel for a seam? That should be easy enough,” she commented. Taking a deep breath, Max let all of her tensions vanish. Upon doing so, she felt along her back, feeling for a seam. But as she felt along, she didn’t come across anything.

Max frowned. “Alright, joke’s over,” she muttered. “I’d like to get this thing off now, please.” But as she felt some more, Max realized that there was no seam – she was stuck! “No, no, no!” she cried. “I can’t… I can’t be like this forever! There’s… there’s got to be a way…”

She suddenly thought of the store she had bought the costume from, and it came to her – Clarence! Even if he couldn’t get her out of the costume, he had to be aware of what had happened to her, and at the very least explain what was going on. Max got off her bed and wondered… was it late enough that no one would spot an echidna running around? The clock said it was 10:30… she should probably wait half an hour or so. But then… Clarence was going to give her some answers.

About an hour later, Clarence was making some last minute touch-ups before he closed up the shop. He sighed to himself; he felt extremely guilty about accidentally selling Max the wrong Tikal costume. And if Clarence was sure about what was going to happen, Max was likely going to show up sometime soon.

Clarence sighed again and shook his head. “How did you get yourself into this?” he asked himself. “Mike Clarence, once a brilliant-but-lazy student, then a highly-talented transmuter… and now an incompetent magical costume maker.” He didn’t even understand it – those first few costumes he made all had the same problem. Although they transformed their wearer fine and didn’t cause any mental changes outside of what was necessary, they always made the change permanent according to his scanning. Luckily, he hadn’t actually sold any until now… but now Max was likely stuck as Tikal permanently.

Clarence couldn’t even figure out why those first costumes were like that. He had fixed the formula he used for enchanting them eventually, but none of the other items he enchanted to cause transformations had this kind of problem: The gem he had given his friend Seth, the shirt he had sold online, the necklace he had planned to give to Jessie as a birthday gift… all of them were fine. The shirt had a slight deficiency to it, but it wasn’t permanently damaging. Why did only the costumes do that?

There was suddenly the ring of the store’s door opening. Clarence sighed – he knew who it was, and decided to brace himself for Max’s reaction to the bad news. Maybe Clarence might offer him – or rather, her now – a place to stay while he tried to sort things out. Whatever he was planning, Mike Clarence walked out into the main store, where he found a young echidna girl in tribal clothing standing before him.

“Alright, Clarence,” Max said, frustration clear in her voice. “I want you to explain what happened, how you did this, and how I can get this costume off.”

Clarence sighed. “As you wish, Max,” he said, “But you’re not going to like it…”

I decided to make a costume TF in time for Halloween thanks to a suggestion from a friend. I used to like them quite a lot, but I've never written one until now. I hope it turned out okay.

I originally wanted the end scene to go on a bit longer, but I wanted to finish up the story, which was already over 4,000 words. Similarly, I hadn't originally considered my previous stories to be in the same universe, but I guessed that maybe it wouldn't hurt to retcon this kind of thing.

This story, where a costume transforms a boy into Tikal the Echidna from Sonic Adventure, is much cleaner than my usual stuff. But I think that's fine.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy. And PLEASE COMMENT. I LOVE comments a LOT more than faves.

wow, how cool it would be if that Sonic costume were for real.
Would love to see more of this fanfiction, since I don't see an end ツ
