This was really cool, super atmospheric and some of it had a real NIN sound to it. Great job!

Thanks :) I've really been enjoying dark ambient music lately and this was my first attempt at creating a track of my own in that genre

That gave me the feeling of: wandering thru a desolate wasteland where I'm protected only by clouds, rocks, dead trees, and vast expanses of dried, cracked mud; seeing/sensing an unknown powerful (or at least conspicuous in power output at a distance) presence coming my way; deciding that it's not worth risking an encounter; and fleeing before the entity can perceive me. Well done.

I'm glad you found it enjoyable!

very cool. lead is a little too dry and upfront in the mix for my taste but that's minor. I'm glad you didn't drag this on for like 25 minutes, like a lot of people would. You had enough material for nearly 4 minutes and that's where it stayed. I wouldn't call this straight up dark. more like half and half. which is a good balance actually. What did you use to make it?

Thanks! I appreciate the critique :)
The lead bell synth does kinda "stand out" a little much considering it's an ambient track. Could have dialed it down a bit more

I use FL studio for all my music stuff

what do you mix on? I've found yamaha mixing monitors give pretty good mixes.

never used FL. is it mostly pre-made loops you arrange? or do you create melodies note by note?

I just use my laptop, I don't have any mixing equipment

FL studio is a note by note arrangement with effects tools and a huge array of available plugins to create your sounds from.
You create your melody tracks and your percussion tracks, add them together in a "playlist"
I also use it to record guitar tracks and arrange them for production

ah, yeah it's hard to mix accurately without a good pair of monitors. If you ever get into it more, yamaha's HS5 monitors are super cheep but REALLY good for getting good mixes. You just gota be aware of your bass levels. If you are not careful, you can over do the bass mixing on small monitors. I used their HS5s for years. Still have them actually but not using them any more. I usually played my final mixes in the car a few times to double check the bass levels.
