Ex-merchant turned treasure hunter. Rick Mallard has lived his whole life doing what he thought was expected of him. It left him bitter and alone, especially after his parents passed away. After the family business burned down, he went off to seek new opportunities and purpose in his life.
Personality
Jerk with a heart of gold-- usually grumpy. Has a sarcastic sense of humor. A hard worker. But will look for shortcuts if he can. Opportunistic.

Hot tempered, cheap, prideful, stubborn, and doesn't always think before he speaks.

Dislikes: children, thieves, those that waste his time, has a fear of drowning.

His head and face in the capless portrait remind me strongly of many older men I've known IRL who conform to the character profile.

Yeah, I'm not surprised. Besides the fact there aren't many bird people that look like him in the world he comes from, he's supposed to be super average. Especially compared to the others in the party, he's as unremarkable as they come. His life has always been mundane, HE has been mundane... and that's why he's looking to change things.

I'll just say it was a deliberate design choice. :)
