They did it. They cracked the code! The name is, in fact, a clue! Like with Bernie Madoff! The name was a clue to his primary skill in life!

Serious note, my headcanon regarding Cutie Marks being usually well suited to the name of the pony, is that, when naming their foals, ponies have a moment of insight, a flash of brilliance, an epiphany that tells them their child's skill, in the form of a name. They don't understand the importance, but they trust this 'instinct' and name the foal that should give them a sign as to what the future holds for them.

Or for a twist, an unnamed foal is a ball of limitless potential, an quantum box of talents. And the name the parents choose is what defines them. Your fate was decides by your parents. You live your entire life happy that someone else decided what you would be good at.

It's likely to do with the fact that Scootaloo (and subsequently her kin it seems) have underdeveloped wings, at least, that's what it seems like.

a part of me always thought that when you got your cutie mark you were allowed (not required) to change your name. but thats just a personal head cannon.
