Buttercup is getting really close now ^^

Another part of the Buttercup and Fox series I managed to get done this Morning.

In this drawing we have all three of them together, Hawkbit the father to be and Her Fox mate show her support as she gets close to having their kits.

This will probably be the last update to this series for a little while, the next one will be introducing Their kits, and that one will take a bit to design them, and sketch and color them. But it will take a while mostly because I have a lot of ideas pile up lately, and I have to start sketching up some of these ideas that I have had written down for a while. So this series will be on pause for a little bit while I work on projects.

Drawing is done by Me
Story is written by a Friend of Mine

Enjoy ^^

A Pregnant Pause

For the most part the day was quite usual. There was the usual sun in the usual, slightly clouded sky. A couple of completely ordinary birds dove and weaved through the trees looking for bugs. There was very little out of the ordinary indeed. The one exception was an unusual pair of creatures making their way with some speed and determination across the gently rolling hills. One was a large fox, the other a grey rabbit. Rather than one chasing the other, as often occurs in the world, the two were nearly neck and neck, not dashing so much as briskly bounding across the vast expanses of grass.

The rabbit was Hawkbit, one of the owsla bucks of Watership Down, a collection of words that would only make sense to another rabbit and few others. He was panting heavily, having to run at a comparatively faster speed on his shorter legs to keep up with his rusty-colored companion. He wasn't particularly eager to get where he was going and was unsure of what would happen when he got there, but he was very well aware of what would happen to him if he didn't, and he was rather fond of having both ears just as long as they were.

"Why" *Huff* "Do I always have the most" *Pant* "Rotten luck? Foxes, weasels" *Gasp* "even having to be the messenger of Frith that one time! It" *Wheeze* "isn't fair!"

The fox didn't reply. He never did. Hawkbit had been informed that he could but was a buck of few words. Or were foxes bucks? He didn't know and wasn't going to ask. All he knew is that he had been out happily hunting down some dandelion (both the snack and his friend.) when he'd run smack-dab into the large vulpine who had hinted silently, but in no uncertain terms, that he was to go with him if he wanted to live. That had been some time ago and they were now rather far from Watership Down, tracing worryingly familiar territory. It had initially been the way to the hedge maze warren, but about halfway there they'd veered off the trail and taken another route.

That he was in the company of a familiar fox was of little comfort to the rabbit. He'd only met the predator twice before and had come off rather poorly each time. His suspicions were confirmed as they crested a hill, a large hole in the side of a small hillock appearing over the horizon. It was patently obvious that no rabbit could dig something so large; they were heading towards a fox den. Internally Hawkbit sighed and once more cursed his luck.

The place absolutely reeked of fox. Male fox. Strong, and hungry male fox, the sort of scent that any sane rabbit (or at least those not seemingly cursed by the black rabbit himself.) would turn tail and flee upon so much as scenting a whiff. If there was any sort of ranking of places not amenable to rabbit habitation the den was probably up there between a wasp nest and a stoat burrow. (In fact Hawkbit was quite sure that he could see the remains of some stoats as he passed. Or maybe they'd been weasels. He could never remember the difference. Whatever they had been, what they were now was very, very dead.) The whole combination of sights, scents and sounds invaded his body via the senses, crawled up his spine and flipped an ancient switch in his head marked 'Panic'.

Though there was something else about the place that was harder to process; things seemingly out of place in such a location. Something was keeping the grass down and had very obviously plucked all the tastiest flayrah out of it. There was a small patch of flowers by the den entrance that ought to have been trampled but had been studiously avoided for some reason. And everywhere improbably smelled like rabbit. Female rabbit in fact, healthy female rabbit. That would be Buttercup, he knew. The crazy bunny who lived out there cavorting with elil. Even though he'd seen it, Hawkbit still couldn't quite bring himself to believe it.

Despite being prepared he was still a little surprised to see her simply sitting there, out in the open, seemingly without a care in the world. It hadn't been that long since he'd seen her last (He was still walking a little odd from that incident.) but one change immediately drew his eye; her pregnancy had progressed considerably. She was looking remarkably rotund and very ungainly, she most certainly would have trouble with simply walking, let alone running. And yet, despite all of that Hawkbit knew enough to be wary. In her domain she was a veritable queen quite capable of making good on her words and promises with the help of her incredibly dedicated predator companion. He approached slowly, suspecting that the entire point of his journey was meeting with her.

"Oh, Hawkbit! So nice to see you!"

"Oh yes, the pleasure's all mine, really."

"It's nice to see that we could track you down and convince you to come see me when you're obviously so busy."

"Well you see, I've rather grown used to having four legs, so when your canine companion here walked up and grabbed one, I thought I should tag along before it got ripped off."

"Ah, no doubt he was only trying to signal my location to you."

'Hell of a signal... no doubt."

For a moment he sat there too, face-to-face with the butterscotch doe as her fox padded up quietly behind her. She didn't flinch, or take a sideways glance or so much as blink as the auburn vulpine sat down close enough for their coats to touch. It was unnatural and slightly unnerving the way simply being next to something that could, with the least effort, tear her in two was just an everyday occurrence, not worth remarking on. He, on the other hand, could barely stand it. He wanted to leave so he cut straight to the chase.

"So, if I may ask, why am I here?"

"Oh we're here to discuss your role in our kits' upbringing."

"Our kits?"

"Oh yes, you're a part of this too now you know, don't think you can just slink off and escape responsibility either. Kits need a warren to raise, but mine is a little... distant for various reasons-"

"Various, rest-colored, large and pointy reasons..."

"-so a buck like yourself will be able to provide useful support."

"I'm not sure Hazel-"

"-Has already guessed their parentage, he's remarkably insightful, him or that brother of his. I doubt he'll object to you spending some time here and I-"

"Rrrr!"

"-we won't take 'no' for an answer."

"Well in that case it seems like I can't give no for an answer."

"Very good. Welcome to the family."

Hawkbit sighed. He deserved this, he knew, which only made it chafe more. He reluctantly took the doe's poffered paw and shook it in agreement. But then it hit him; this really was a family of sorts; the kits were most certainly his own offspring and he had a clear chance to pass on all he knew. He found his paw letting go, subconsciously drifting to the ample tan stomach just out of reach.

It was soft, yet firm; the skin stretched taut over it, slightly giving and warm. He was sure that the faint sensation of stirring from within was more than his imagination, standing there, reaching out and touching the new life that was growing even as he stood there. There was no doubt; they would need a proud buck to teach them the ways of the world, and who better than Watership Down's top stud?

"Alright then, it's a deal! Is that all? I can go now?"

"Hmm? Oh yes, there's nothing much you can do yet I suppose. Feel free to head on back, Rusty here can take you, unless you two buck wanna have some fun elsewhere."

The fox grinned; a knowing, mischievous look, pointed muzzle displaying rows of ivory-white teeth. Hawkbit sighed, seeing his chances of a quick returns evaporating. As a brownish muzzle bent down behind him, firmly grasping him by the scruff of his neck and picking him up with ease he wondered about what kind of story he could concoct to cover his tail. Captain Bigwig would be upset he missed owsla training, again, and he never accepted any excuses, even foxy ones.

Indeed Zib, indeed!

This is the start of a nice friendship between the Fox and Hawkbit though, and believe Me, that Fox
is gonna start really liking having Hawkbit around.
