But then there will be one or two kids like me ending up with a severe attachment issue at the very least. Then again can't really blame this show for that... or the land before time for my issues.

I hope they're not dead, I know there are other kids shows where a characters parents are dead but it's never stated anywhere (or shown, they're obviously missed/missing but theres so far been no memorial or rememberance piece). If you recall they weren't around in applejacks flashback to when she got her cutie mark, and applebloom (in theory) wasn't born then. It could simply be that they're not around, not able to visit during the family reunions or even in equestria at all!

AB's parants may be dead, but at least she knows who they are from all indications the pegasi of cloudsdale are raised comunaly, we have 'never' seen a young pegasus with there parants like ever...there was one time that showed rainbow with a stalion people thought was her father but hasbro officialy stated that he was not....more a mentor of sorts.
the cakes kids don't count as they were born in ponyville, not couldsdale so of course there not gonna be raised in the cloudsdale way.
