InkBunny Alternate Submission Page Mockup

A way out, better late than dead
set default image size: small | medium | wide

A lil something I decided to make based on  this journal about changes that could be made to inkbunny to make it a lil easier to use. I dunno if it's "against the rules" to post a screen cap of a page of this site with another modded one, but I thought an external link was best.

Just check out the difference!!! See #5 in my journal about wasted space, that's what I'm talking about. The page doesn't have to be so giagantic! Smaller pages are easier to click though when everything is closer together. Bearly any scrolling is needed this way, and I'll bet it's a bit quicker.

lol good luck, they seem to like this crappy layout with all the HUGE wasted space at the sides that do NOTHING!
gg poor page design.

Agreed. Well, you know they DO encouraging hacking, and I've seen a greasemonkey script that does change the layout a little bit. I think I may try to make a script that rearranges the layout too. Although javascript is very new to me ^^ it's worth a shot.

That does seem to be a fair improvement.  Though that doesn't take into account the text box for story submissions.  It could go on the bottom in that newly freed space though.

Ah, I didn't think about that ^^; I bearly ever use it. I'll take it into consideration whenever I get around to tinkering with javascript :)

Looks good, supposedly after they are done with the new sales system they are going to do a lot of work on the site.

The current version works on smaller screens and (in theory) mobile devices, but I can't see your version shrinking at all.
Whippy
12 years, 8 months ago
Nope, there's no room in between controls to use for shrinking. That was kinda my point ^^; , didn't want any wasted space. I think I may try making a javascript for greasemonkey to impliment this.

I think your concept of "wasted space" is a misinterpretation of "room to breathe". Not every site needs to be super cramped and filling extra pixels.
Whippy
12 years, 8 months ago
Well....if I was going to spend large amounts of time at the submission page, then yes I'd want it to be cozy and have "room to breathe". However when I'm submitting something all I'm aiming for is getting it over with as quickily as possible so I can get on with doing other things like making more art. When you have 5+ submissions to upload, describe, catagorize, tag, place in the gallery or scraps, and put into a pool ....doing this successively realllllllly gets annoying and I just want to to go as smoothly and quickly as possible. Doing all the mumojumbo just to describe a submission is my least favorite part of the whole thing honestly. So, having everything closer together would help the whole process go by faster. Like I said above, I'll make my own script to do this for myself, no global mod changes needed.

There are ways to code the page so the spacing is dynamic, and would work for any screen sizes. They chosen to do a set resolution size, meaning anyone who uses a larger monitor and their webpage full screen has huge gaping boarders on the sides full of wasted space. When I'm browsing a list of images, I want it to be using the space I have available so I don't have to flip through or scroll down through a ton of pages. Some of us have larger monitors for a reason, we should be able to take advantage of that fact, especially since it should have no bearing on anyone else if the page is coded properly.

On my screen the actual webpage content takes up about 1/2 of the screen. So half of my screen is wasted on grey (since I turned off the background image because it's distracting to the eye rather then blending in with the site).

Sorry, but it looks jumbled, everything just lumped together.  Try viewing that on a 4.5" screen and see how easy it is to submit anything.
Whippy

Hopefully I'll never have to use a screen that small 9_9.
I made it to fit a screen with a medium to large resolution. Mine is 1280 x 720, so that's what I went by.
I'm sure the default works fine for you with your screen, but for me the default is a huge space waster.

It's called mobile use, you know, the future of computing?  I think I use my phone to browse the web more then my computer anymore.

If you had ever taken an interface design course, or any type of design course for that mater, you would see the massive flaws in your design.  The IB layout isn't perfect, but shoving every single form field you can in a usability-hell jumble is not the direction to go.

Websites can be coded to display dynamically based on the resolution of the person viewing it. This example is just one possibility of what they could do, and definitely shows merit in my eyes. It is a bit cluttered, but as for mobile devices, I'd like to point out that NO ONE draws this stuff on them, and therefore NO ONE submits it using them. If they do, then I have no idea why they would, other then to re-post art they didn't draw (which is fine with permission, or if they own it).

I think the best solution is to have more then one theme to choose from on the site.

lol I rest my case...

You found 1 artist out of how many on this site? Future of browsing, maybe, but every artist I watch has a real monitor.
The point still remains that are options that would make the site more dynamic for everyone, even the mobile users, and rather then commenting on that you try to troll. Go back to fapping on your phone.

Whew...people really take this layout stuff personally eh? Serious business! I hope folks are done getting their toes stepped on today lol. Hooray for 200x300 pixels....the future!
BunnyFoxglove
12 years, 8 months ago
lol really... lets not mention that artist uses an iPad which is what? Like 10" I think? That's not quite the same as a 4.5" screen. Either way, I'm working on a GM script too for browsing purposes, cuz honestly the layout is the major thing that really bothers me the most on this site.

We offer ideas and try to brainstorm in a journal, and all he can do is whine and cause arguments. Which is pretty funny considering he doesn't have a single post of his own, and your post is concerning the layout for posting. Why does it even matter to him anyways? rofl.
Whippy

Some people just love to argue for the hell of it I guess. Kinda like pissing in the wind if you ask me lol.

But yeah....I'm really interested in learning to code in javascript for greasemonkey. Would you know of any good tools for this? I have firefox and pspad for code editing. If you want to collab a bit on some ideas that would be awesome as well. :)
BunnyFoxglove
12 years, 8 months ago
For the most part I just google the commands. Syntax I understand because I've done programming for many years, and I have a bit of background in web pages due to my schooling. A lot people like pspad, I use notepad++, but it's all preference.

What you're trying to do is actually quite a bit of work, just so you know. I'm not even sure what the best direction would be for it.
Whippy
12 years, 8 months ago
Ah okay. A lotta work? Yeah..*chuckles* I know, but well, I think it's something worth doing. As for direction, mmmm...I'm pretty confident with UI stuff usually. I could prolly whip something decent up. I guess I could goodle some commands for JS lol, but I'll pick up a few books instead.
BunnyFoxglove
12 years, 8 months ago
Well, basically from what little I know of gm's capabilities you'd have to either move things around, or re-create it using the js commands.
Whippy
12 years, 8 months ago
Mmmm Hmm. Moving stuff around is basically what I did with this lil mockup thing. Gosh o_o I guess I should get to reading about GM too....

Hmm...I detect an insulting tone...thanks for that.

" t's called mobile use, you know, the future of computing?  I think I use my phone to browse the web more then my computer anymore.

It's not the future, it's the present, and there's LOTS of choices on how to use the web, a big screen on a regulat computer, a laptop, a phone...etc. I understand your defending your own method here, but uh...there's no need to make it out the be the end all be all solution to the web. It simply isn't, it's a choice, not the future for everybody.

" If you had ever taken an interface design course, or any type of design course for that mater, you would see the massive flaws in your design.

Now your attacking my supposed knowlege, I'm not a web site designer, I'm an ARTIST!!! I draw things, I upload them. As a hobby I do a little AHK scripting and that's about it. I make things the way they work best for ME with my hardware, usually with a resolution width of at least 800 or more pixels. This particular thing I did here was for 1280, which is a good resolution for drawing and painting. Massive flaws? Now your blowing your tantrum way out of proportion...chill out! It's a choice of layout. You're treating the thing like it was Hitler himself...lol...jesus. I like my controls close together so I don't have to scroll a mile down the page to do something. As mentioned before, I'm concerned with speed of use because I submitt a lot of things.  Do you submitt a lot of things on your phone? Do you draw images or animate on your phone? These things go much faster on a regular sized computer with a decent screen...for reals!

Form follows function.

And I completely agree with BunnyFoxglove,  great points!.

You want everyone to conform to your screen resolution and you think I'm insulting?

Don't worry, I'm dropping it.
Whippy
12 years, 8 months ago
No I don't. You're free to use your phone with the default theme. I'm going to write my own greasemonkey script like I talked about in the above comments to others. See? I'm not an InkBunny Hitler. I'm just a frusterated artist and wants his UI a little tighter. I ain't gonna force it on anybody okay?

I can certainly see the appeal on your design. I have the background turned off that normally displays on the sides anyway.  I do this because the wallpaper lags out scrolling.  The narrow format exacerbates this problem by making the scrolling so necessary.  I also have an incredibly wide monitor, so there's a full page of wasted space when you add up the sides.

I would like to see this, or something like this, added as an alternative format for the website that we can select in our preferences.

I think I already responded to your journal, but I guess I can respond here as well. As some other people, I don't really agree with this change. While I see what you are getting at, I think it looks better right now, and your version looks clamped and not all that good. And that's from someone who uses 1920x1080 on his screen. The fact that i have lots of pixels in screen width, doesn't mean I can't for example, browse in a small window which you know, doesn't take my whole screen (someone commented thinking this was a valid argument, I don't agree) It does not take my whole screen with empty space, because... my web browser is just a small window on my screen. If someone sees current format as "wasted space" then I'm sorry to say I think that is a lack of understanding of proper web design (And as for me, I did sort of study web design, although I'm hardly any special at it)

BUT, having said that, I'm all for customization, and if you can just make it a greasemonkey script like you suggested, then I don't see why not, go for it, I'm sure some people will find it useful.

I'd be even fine if it would be some official alternative layout to use, but I wouldn't want the current layout to just be replaced with yours, because I like the current one better. And that's exactly why I'm commenting.
Whippy
12 years, 8 months ago
Well, that's fine. I didn't follow any "rules" about the layout, I just did what I thought looked reasonable for me. It'll be an alternative for sure. I had no idea people took this thing so personally compared to art lol. Anywho, derp...time to learn javascript.
supremekitten
12 years, 8 months ago
Well, it's not that I take it personally. It's just that if a bunch of people said they wanted it changed, and no people said they prefer it the way it is, it's likely it would be changed. And I don't want it changed ; p
That's really all there is to it.

personally, I like how the overall flow of your design is. I can find anything I want with relative ease, and that is that. I wouldnt want it as the only layout, but an alternative would suffice, as I do visit the site from my phone every once in a while. As far as coding it for phones and such, I do not believe that would be necessary unless the phone in question lacked a zoom feature. Most phones nowadays have the ability to zoom or rearrange the layout of the page to conform to the dimensions of the screen. This seems to be a function provided solely by the device, and not the page, considering I can do these things on sites that have no scripts for various monitor sizes. That being said, I'll finish up with a short statement:

Dont dare throw a tantrum at someone, just because you think their idea sucks. Grow up and grow a pair. In most cases, that person will become one of the few who will rule this world, and may just have some influence over you later on. Dont piss in their wheaties, and they wont annihilate you at their earliest convenience.

There are some good ideas here. Layout hasn't been a super-huge priority compared to other features, security updates, etc. - but it hasn't been forgotten, either. We'll keep a note of this for the future.
