After doing some dangerous work, Jetwing went to a friend whom happened to be a repair droid with the serial number RD564 or Ardy. in order to repair Jetwing, Ardy disassembled him and worked on different parts at different times before starting to reassemble. all the while Jetwing's mind was in a temporary frame. once he was done, Ardy put Jetwing back together and put his mind back into place.

If my scanner was working i would have posted the sketch that i did of Ardy before this, however I like it more when the characters are doing something in their introduction drawing so i don't mind. i know i could have taken a photo of the drawing however i feel that sometimes blurs the details of the drawing itself. anway enjoy! ^w^

The Metal Men, unique DC superhero team, were meant to be a 1-shot. Which is why they were all destroyed in Showcase #37. BUT Showcase, which was supposed to introduce a new DC character or series every 3 issues, still had not come up with new ideas. So the Metal Men were rebuilt and ran 4 issues. Soon they started their own series. But in almost every one they were smashed up or melted or chemically eaten up. Sometimes they failed and simply bought time for Dr.Magnus to get out some super-weapon to stop the threat himself.

DC never felt the need to be consistent with this team.

DC never explained why they were dismantled and Dr.Magnus had trouble rebuilding them for a new series after Crisis or Zero Hour or whatever. They were rebuilt - reFORGED as the ad went- with new responsometers.

the metal men had been featured at least once on Batman the brave and the bold, however before that point, i had never heard of them, shame too, there could have been potential for them. your description of them reminds me of the toy line for the Crash Test Dummies where of course, they would fall apart by getting into accidents, i think there was a short lived cartoon for them too.

For the Showcase trial series, and for about 12 issues, they appeared to be the ONLY super-heroes on Earth.(tho some of the threats should have drawn the other heroes) Then they began to come upon Superman, Wonder Woman, and others of the DC stable, who barged in and solved the threat before the Metal Men could go into action.

Their despairing of being needed at all, was resolved -for the mo - when the Polymer Men (robots of plastic, with all the powers of plastic, like dividing into duplicates or exuding oil to make the Metal Men slip and take pratfalls.) showed up to do crimes.

Tin created a cute girlfriend who had no name, but she disappeared without explanation when the series changed direction. Her return in Brave & Bold, only to be destroyed permanently, saddened me.

Showcase #36 was the last ATOM issue, and this time Showcase did not have a superhero to re-introduce (many Superheroes from the 40's or 50's were being re-introduced or updated). The Metal Men were whipped up as a 1-shot. Robots ,each one composed of and having the powers of a different metal element they were forged from. So Showcase #37 brought in -and destroyed- the 6 Metal Men (Gold,lead, Iron, Mercury, Tin, and the unpredictable Platinum.). DC did not expect to ever bring them back, and any of the JLA could have tackled the monster they were created to fight.Still, DC had not come up wiith a new idea.

So,they were rebuilt and brought back in #38. #39-40 had them fight Chemo. A few months later, they started their own series.
It changed direction in #33 with Tin's girlfriend suddenly absent and not even mentioned, Doc in a coma, and the Metal Men hated and hunted by mankind. Dr.Magnus' brother had to protect them between missions. Finally men sought to destroy them for good, but some revived them & remade them to look human ! Gold became Guy Gilden of Wall Street, Iron became a steel worker, Tin & Lead became rock musicians, Tina became a fashion model and Mercury a bearded artist. They maintained these disguises even when fighting threats to the world.

Doc eventually came out of his coma -as a villain, and the Metal Men had to fight -perhaps,KILL- him, but the story was cut off by cancellation due to dwindling sales. Some time later, the Metal Men resurfaced, back as obvious robots and fight -the Plutonium Man. * Doc was back, but his mental health was always in question. DC has officially said that he is bipolar and only in manic phase does he have the skill to maintain them.

* This robot always was red-hot with radiation and incinerated the Metal Men before Platinum finally caused him to go China Syndrome. Her responsometer was affected by the gamma rays and she transferred her affections to her team-mates for at least 1 issue. Near the end of the 56 issue run, she had gotten fed up with Doc's stubborn refusal to acknowledge her affections and decided to walk out on him. DC has run them sporadically ever since, and more than once,had to retcon a radical change .Origins and natures were changed...

The repair droid working on Jetwing is not exactly anthro. BUT this shows the trend towards not using the human form if a dfferent form would perform the intended function better. In re:Japan's factory robots.
