During World War II, American armored warfare doctrine emphasized the role of the tank as supporting infantry during an assault and the exploitation of any ensuing breakthrough.  The job of destroying enemy tanks fell to a different type of armored fighting vehicle, the tank destroy.  Sacrificing heavier armor for the ability to carry a larger gun and travel faster, thus allowing them to rapidly to engage any enemy advance, the US Army field several different designs of tank destroyer, or TD.  One of the first to see action during the war was the M10 Wolverine Gun Motor Carriage.  Sometimes referred to as the “Wolverine,” the M10 was based on the hull of the M4A2 Sherman tank and fitted with an open-top turret mounting a 3-inch gun.

The M10 GMC made its combat debut during the Battle of El Guettar in North Africa where American M10s and M3 GMCs (another, older tank destroyer design based on the M3 halftrack) destroyed 30 German tanks: however, this came at the cost of 20 M3s and 7 M10s destroyed as well.  It also saw service in the Pacific where it fared well against Japanese armor.  The type was also fielded by the British (who also upgunned them with a more powerful 17-pounder gun), the Free French (one Free French tank was credited with destroying a Panther in the Place de la Concorde during the liberation of Paris), and the Soviets (who fielded them in two self-propelled artillery regiments).  After the war, Israel also acquired a number of M10s as did Egypt (some of which were later captured by the Israelis).

Though the M10 GMC served admirably throughout the war, its gun was quickly outmatched by the development of more heavily armored German tanks such as the Panther.  Its slow manual turret traverse also hindered its ability to engage targets rapidly and its open-top design put its crew at risk in urban fighting or when infantry support was absent.  Despite its shortcomings, the Wolverine served through to the end of the war destroying enemy armor as well as supporting infantry forces with its 3-inch gun.

In January of 1945, 2nd Lt. Audie Murphy used an M2 .50 cal. machine gun mounted on burning M10 GMC to fend off a German attack by infantry and armor near Holtzwihr, France.  His tenacious defense of the position alone despite heavy enemy fire and his own wounds as well as organizing a counter attack which forced the Germans to retreat earned him the Medal of Honor.
