It is a Dark Souls thing. "Hollowing" is the name given to the process by which undead lose themselves, becoming mindless monsters.

Well, those who played Dark Souls sure know how this could have went wrong. Probably turning all this events with killing into self-defense or something, where if AJ didn't killed her husband, she'd be dead for good together with her child, making whole "revenge" thing to be quite pointless in the first place.
