When I was little, the routine was, my dad and I would put them up on Thanksgiving day. But we didn't turn them on until AFTER Thanksgiving dinner was over.

I remember as a kid my granddad would drag out the old c2 based light strands, screwing and unscrewing bulbs for hours, trying to keep the color scheme the same all through out the strands.. Climbing the old ass wooden ladder up and down in packed snowfall.. The "Noel" plastic candles that were four feet tall that greeted you as you walked up to the house... the three tier candle light fixtures in all the windows...

That was a lot of work..

But when you drink your coffee, or as me being a kid, your hot cocoa and looked at it from the street, it was beautiful.

I miss those days..

I miss you granddad..

Red, Orange, White, Green Blue....
We had the peaked garage roof facing the street, then the door side of the garage and the front of the house.
Below the peak on the garage there was the two choir boys with a hymnal, and on the porch a noel candle.
And those bulbs were C7. 7 Watts apiece. A string of 20 was 140 watts, and it took about 5 strings to do the house and garage.
Nobody had timers, so you had to remember to turn them on around dinner time, and then turn them off when you went to bed.
But EVERY house in the neighborhood had lights up.
Even the one Jewish family in the neighborhood compromised and had a string of blue and white bulbs. ;-)
And of course, there was always that ONE neighbor that had 1500 lights and plastic statues all over the front lawn.

It's sad, I drive down Main Street. My store has lights on the canopy. Then nothing until you get to my house.
My next door neighbor has those God Awful "icicles" that looked like somebody threw up on his gutters.
And that's it. Nothing down the rest of Main Street.

"Threw up on the gutters" I like that one. Yeah I remember the plastic figurines all over the front yard and no you are right about no timers... you always told the husband to kill the lights. They were typically ran to the famous thread in tap a light socket pull chain adapter with a light bulb on the other end do hickey thing...

As for lights around here I got to put up a set as soon as I get off work.
