SO one evening I read the horror manga Gyo by Junji Ito - which honestly, the first time I heard his name, I was confused about the idea of 'Judge Ito" writing horror manga.  "The Judge of the OJ Simpson trial?" Yeah. It took me a moment.

-What I expected: "SCARY SPOOKINESS"
-What I got: "HIDEO KOJIMA LEVELS OF GOOFINESS"

But then again- taking scary things completely out of context is what makes Halloween so fun, no?

ROFL! As soon as I read the first panel I knew immediately what you were talking about. If you're unfamiliar with Junji Ito, I recommend Uzumaki. It's probably his most famous work and very disturbing. The Enigma of Amagiri Fault is another good one as well.

Gyo, I personally feel, is one of his weaker stories as it actually gives an explanation to the spooky stuff.

"The thing that washed ashore" is a favorite of mine.

And that's actually what I like about Junji Ito. I can't judge the quality of his horror because I don't like the genre, but the sense of supernatural weirdness of his stories is fascinating.
