In the distant future, humanity had crafted robots, and had salvaged a very useful power source in Mana. With these, the robots, powered by mana fueled nanites, and humans grew and grew. A flash arms race of technology.

Eventually, friction between states, ideals, and people, resulted in a catastrophe.

no one is certain what happened, but an energy wave blanketed most of the world, destroying most of those at ground zero, but those who were farther out, different fates awaited them.

Some people survived.

Others were mutated. Some combining with nearby fauna into horrific creatures muddled mentally back to primal thoughts.

Yet against all chances, these eldrich creatures actually managed to not only successfully mate, but produce offspring.

While the robots and humans who survived grew into mostly peaceful, if primitive societies, these creatures evolved swiftly, taking a mere few hundred years to purge the unrequired traits and establish a new life form.

A lone human, wandering the outskirts of the wastelands and salvaging mana-lacking tech, for use in prosthetic works, happened upon one, or rather, she approached him.

Startling him, he first saw her chest before he looked up and saw her swiftly twitching head, the first two questioning words in his head being "Lady? Bird?" he was unsure, but she was not offensive nor seemed interested in harming him. In fact, she seemed to find no issue in touching him repeatedly with her soft hands, her claws being skillfully kept from his skin.

It took some time of her following him around in the outskirts before he realized that she was attempting to talk to him. She made various, odd noises in her throat that could almost be mistaken for words, interspersed with clicks from her beak. At first he thought she was making noise, but after a while, he learned certain sounds and mannerisms actually meant things. Her human  friend isn't fluent in her species language, and hasn't been able to identify what her name is, but she seems to be content being called the nickname he came up with, taking the two words he thought of when he first saw her, taking to call her Ladybird.

Despite the fact that, in the wilds, she was never more than an arm's length from him, she would not follow him into the towns. it took some time before he learned that her species had something akin to an allergic reaction to Mana.

Mana, being a fuel source in times past, was now seen as an exotic and volatile source of "magic" used by nearly everyone, save for this human and those in the outer reaches.

This human friend, however, never dabbled in it, providing Ladybird with quite the curiosity.

Despite her 6' tall stature, she and her species have nearly never been seen, though the human is not fully sure why. She often will vanish with no sound as he returns to the towns before appearing just as swiftly when he returns to the outer reaches. He's not seen any others of her people and when questioned how many more of her kind there are, the closest answer he has gained has been "lots and lots, more than your digits on your hands".
