Five Years
Nighttime on the subway, the car rattling and swaying on the tracks as Sabian and Feldon travelled out of Cantertown and into the city. The young fox felt strange and nervous in the ensuing silence and tried to start up a conversation: “So have you been in Cantertown long? I'm surprised that our paths have never crossed.”
Feldon chuckled, “I've been in Canter for five years. I know just about everyone in the gay and club scenes in the area. I am everybody's dad and confessor; so when you have any kind of problems Sabian, just seek me out and I'll help in any way that I can.”
“What about Penn? How well do you know him?” Sabian asked.
Feldon took a deep breath and considered, “I know him more through reputation and I knew what was on his mind the moment you entered the club. So I made sure to keep an eye on the two of you, I suspected that you would give Penn an opening sooner or later. Thankfully he doesn't come to Canter often but when he does us oldsters keep a close watch.”
“Why doesn't Fivot just toss him out?” Sabian asked.
“No proof of what he does, so we all just keep an eye on matters. The rabbit would likely have prevented you from leaving with him if I hadn't interceded and then he'd have proof of wrong doing,” Feldon explained.
Above their heads the conductor announced the station stop as “Candle” and Feldon slapped the fox on the knee, “This is our stop my friend. Club Saviour Machine, for this night only The Noise Vermin.”
The subway car rumbled and jerked to a stop, the doors opened with a musical chiming and the squirrel and fox stepped out onto the filthy platform and headed for the stairs to the south. From here the club was a short half-block walk; an industrial looking place of chrome and neon, from within the sounds of synth and drums pulsed into the night. Outside the door a panther stood and eyed Feldon and Sabian, seemed to recognize the squirrel with a nod and let them through. The music was strange, a hybrid of 80's synth-pop and dance, being performed live up on the stage by a group of rodents. Sabian wasn't sure that it was really his thing, but seeing all the people on the dance floor, male and female, gay and straight, brought feelings of happiness and relief.
Feldon danced his way about the crowd, greeting the various patrons as he went, introducing Sabian to several of them, but he seemed to be on a dancing trajectory toward a specific group on the other side of the club.
