My grandfather was a pilot, and good lord... He had nerves of steel. He once told me about having to land a small aircraft on the same runway a commercial airliner was taking off on. (I guess there was a mixup in the tower). He missed hitting the underside of the airliner by a foot and a half, maybe 2 feet.
He also scared the crap out of my grandmother on an hour flight we were on, claiming that he was going to do a loop-de-loop. My grandmother lost her shit and started screming "No (Name), No No No!" He was an amazing person.
Fairly sure that may be common in flight school. My grandfather was a pilot, and good lord... He ha
I think it's common in higher education in general, at least for people starting out until they get the swing of things.
I probably would have had some fun talking to your grandfather. Air traffic control has gotten a lot better with technology. The incident you described above is uncommon, but does happen. It happens much less now than it used to, but there are some infamous incidents of airplanes not missing each other on the ground.

I could see crying when your dog dies. And both my parents are still alive so far, and my father cried at his parents funerals. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Ah okay. It was some guy I worked with, he goes, "A guy is only supposed to cry twice, when his mom dies and when his dog dies." I don't think he had a third one.
