Knuckles is dressed as the protagonist that is so incredibly powerful he can defeat any foe in one punch. Shadow is a cyborg who is Knuckles' apprentice in hopes to become as powerful as him. Sonic is a villain/anti-hero who uses his incredible speed to take his place as Knuckles' rival. Even though he's not nearly as strong as Knuckles.
