The squirrel hung her coat up on the rack by the front door of the apartment, allowing herself a good, long yawn. She had been given the late shift at work tonight, along with the job of closing up, so it was well past midnight when she was finally able to leave. Now, after many, many hours awake, Alexa was home at last, and wanted to simply collapse into her bed and sleep for as long as she needed.
The television would have to be switched off first, though, its slightly tinny audio the most obvious sound now she was inside. Flicking on the lights, a disgruntled groan from somewhere in the room caught her off guard. Softly heading into the front room, Alexa peered over towards the sofa, where a diminuitive mongoose was sitting with one hand over his eyes.
"James?"
"Hey there..." he yawned, lowering his hand and squinting a little against the sudden brightness.
"It's like, three in the morning," Alexa told him, rubbing her own eyes softly, "Why're you still up?"
"I just wanted to be sure you got home safe," James explained, trying his best to keep his head up.
The squirrel couldn't help smiling a little at that. The mongoose gave a smile of his own in return, as she trudged towards him. "Whatcha watching?" Alexa asked, as the voices on the television had gotten a little more fraught, someone on the screen in a shirt and tie gesticulating angrily at what she assumed was the interviewer.
"I'unno," shrugged James turning back to perhaps a televised debate, "Probably something to do with the news." A distressed groaning noise suddenly came from the sofa, and James found himself tilting towards the right as his housemate took the seat alongside him, sending him face-first into one of her breasts.
After a moment for the pair to fully realise what had happened, Alexa couldn't help giggling to herself. That set James off into gentle laughter of his own, slightly muffled against the squirrel side-boob he was now facing. Sure, sharing a flat got awkward at times, but they could certainly have some fun together while they were, and it didn't stop them caring for one another.
"Happy Valentine's, James," Alexa said, placing one hand on the shoulder of her companion.
"You too, Alexa," James slurred, glancing up towards her, nestling himself a little further up against the big girl. It was quite comfy like this, he thought, when she wasn't crushing or suffocating him.
The squirrel slowly rubbed her flatmate's shoulder, pulling him towards her a little more. This was quite nice, just cuddling up to each other. Even thought she'd have to be a little bit careful, lest she hurt him by mistake. "I forget, have you got work tomorrow?" Alexa asked, yawning once again. The television kept the room from silence, but an answer didn't come. "James?" she looked down towards the mongoose alongside her.
He'd fallen asleep.
"Hmhm..." Slowly, Alexa began stroking James' ear as a gentle snoring joined the now calmer voices from the screen opposite them. She made herself a little more comfortable on the sofa, allowing the mongoose to settle into his makeshift pillow. "Mmm..."
She could stay awake for a little longer.

Woo, something good. =D And I actually got something done that I'd planned to get done, rather than leaving it for later and returning after a month. Kinda needed to, though, what with the timing and such.
