Maybe this was the FIRST time he split. There was a character -named Captain Marvel (no resemblance to the classic character) who could split & recombine. The explanation was that he was a ROBOT designed that way. He would call SPLIT and each part would go off to carry out a task, and when he called XAM (I think. The comics I read 50 years ago) the parts would fly back together. It was poorly plotted & drawn.

In "Diabolical Festivities"* the teacher ,Mrs.Schaddenfreud, organizes a race -and to make it wilder, chops off everybody's head and sutures them onto the wrong bodies. Since each person still controls their own bodies, the result is uproarious confusion !
And that's just one of the games in each round. Others include Inflation Tetris. Each round ends with lights out and one of the participants, the Killer, KILLS one of the players ! The victim is then taken out to recupurate (nobody dies in that world,either) and the others try to identify the killer and/or safeguard oneself from being the next victim. The game goes on until the killer is found OR nobody is left BUT the killer.
