Howard. Inspired by the Marvel color comic, when Val Mayerick was artist.

Holy moly! I haven't seen seen Howard the Duck art in decades! When I first saw the thumbnail I asked myself, is it? LOL!

Only old timers/greymuzzles would know that character ;)

Yeah, I'm getting up there—my shingles this summer was proof! (Still hurts.) But thanks for your zealous reply (and fave). Howard's a class act. ^!^

And I'm STILL laughing every time I think of Beverly finding a tiny ducky condom in his wallet.

Heh! Indeed. Whereas some have a rubber ducky, Howard has a....

Yes, Steve Gerber had a wry cast on Howard.
Howard was meant to be a one-shot, he fell off the path while accompanying a sorcerer, his disciple, and Man-Thing to some mission involving the Cosmic Axis, and was supposedly lost forever in infinity. Gerber didn't intend to write any more of the character, but fan demand had him brought back.

He landed in Cleveland,Ohio, and took up lodging with Beverly. Then he faced various adversaries and threats. All without super-powers or even a 2nd cup of java.

Sometimes Steve Gerber's twist on things was abrasive.
When Gerber left Marvel, other writers messed around with his creations and he sued !

One of my favorite episodes was when Howard was temporarily transformed into a human and had to make the best of his "condition" in NYC.

Yeah, and that was the work of Dr.Bong (I'm going by memory, since most of my Howard issues seem to have been stolen). I haven't done a thorough sorting of what I have on my shelves. Howard reverted to duckhood due to some hormone upset caused by Beverly. Went to bed a man (and a mediocre looking one at that) and woke up - a DUCK !

In that issue's "WiseQuacks" column, the editors explain their goal was to have Howard's human incarnation be a composite of "Columbo" (Peter Falk) and "Baretta" (Robert Blake). And, yes, he wasn't much to look at (mission accomplished!). And it wasn't Beverly's carnal prowess that undid the malice of Dr. Bong's evolvo-chamber, but a hook-up Howard enjoyed in G. Village with a female whose name I should remember, but can't. (Hey, it's been nearly 40 years now.) ^,^

One of the running gags in Howard was people shouting at him "Hey, you're a DUCK !".

In the very first issue of Cerebus the Aardvark (which I have a reprint of, in book collection form), he came into a bar and the innkeeper said "Hey, you're a ...". That's as far as he got, as Cerebus dragged him over the bar and almost onto his sword ! The innkeeper saved his neck by amending his crack to "You're a guest !". Nobody fooled around with Cerebus ! Not if they hadn't kept up their life insurance payments !

I'm surprised Howard has NOT showed up in "Deadpool" or "Great Lakes Avengers". Maybe I overlooked it if he did, because I stopped reading Marvel years ago.

Likewise. Everything I know about Marvel now I know from the movies. Lazy! ^,^

The discussion in the comments here is as fascinating as the submission that started it.

Howard was very much a duck of his time. Lots of trenchant observations about pop culture and human limitations. If Frank Zappa made comic books....

Laughs, then it would have been Dweezle the Duck.

Hahaha! I can see it! In fact, I recall an issue of HTD that featured the four members of KISS. ^+^

They boiled out of the mind of some misfit who could tap into alternate realities. Nothing ordinary in that comic.

Howard would be disappointed in Daffy though.
