Ch. 9 – Tag Duel Mayhem
Written by TheAmariaShadow

Ever since the deal with Prof. Kaiba, Leslie and I have been on edge for the past couple of weeks. Neither of us knew what he could’ve had in store for us, but even I knew that it wouldn’t be good. Still, that didn’t scare me in the slightest. I was ready for anything he could throw at us! …..I hope….

“So, how does that look to you, Onyx?”, Leslie asked me as I overlooked his deck. My eyes were wide in surprise to see the type of deck he ran. “This is a pretty good deck, Leslie. How on Earth were you ever able to get all the cards for it?”, I asked. The Ra Yellow giggled and said, “My dad travels a lot, and he always would bring me a card or two from his travels. With his help, I was able to complete the entire deck in a matter of months.” I smirked as I handed him back his deck and said, “It’ll certainly come in handy during our duel.” Leslie looked down towards the floor of my dorm room and asked, “Who do you think Prof. Kaiba has set up to duel us, Onyx?” I frowned and looked up towards the ceiling. “No idea, Leslie. But I do know this: we cannot let whoever it is scare us. We got to take this on with every fiber of our being and win, no matter what.”, I replied.

Leslie nodded as I heard a knock at the door. “It’s open, come on in!” I stated, looking over my deck once more. Leslie turned to the door and smiled as he saw Crystal and the others walk into the room. “So, are you two ready for this?”, Robin asked as she sat down on the bed. “Well, with a little luck, whatever Mokuba throws at us won’t know what’ll hit them!”, I replied, placing my deck into its case. “Still, I wonder who he has set up to duel you two. Any ideas, guys?”, Crystal asked. “Maybe it’s Dash and that other girl Catherine!”, Jessie said with a happy tone. Mikey chuckled and patted her head gently and said, “That’s Kaitlyn, Jessie. And no, I doubt Prof. Kaiba would make this duel so easy. No, whoever he pairs against you two, it certainly will be a tough duel from start to finish.” I frowned when Mikey said that, my ears twitched slightly when I heard my PDA go off. I tapped the screen gently to see Mokuba’s face appear on it. “Well then, Mr. Sairenji. I do hope you and Mr. von Krieg took the time to tweak your decks. Remember, if either of you hit zero, you both lose the duel.”, he said with a cold grin.

“No need to worry, Mokuba. We’ll win, no problem.”, I said with a confident grin. Mokuba chuckled and said, “I wonder about that. Originally, I had planned to have you two in a Turbo Duel against the Duel Twins, Leo and Luna.” Mikey’s eyes went wide when Mokuba said that. “Leo AND Luna!? That’s crazy! Those two are the best tag team duelists on this side of the planet, Prof. Kaiba! No way they would’ve won!”, he exclaimed. “But….but we’re the best….”, Crystal and I said in sync. Mokuba smirked and said, “Of course! The entire duel would’ve been stacked in my favor, considering that the Slifer slacker here haven’t even began to learn how to drive a Duel Runner, let alone learn the rules of a Turbo Duel!”

I frowned and immediately replied, “You are certainly being cocky for a person who lost against me and my sister, Kaiba!” Mokuba frowned and stated, “Stalemate, runt. Unfortunately for me, the twins were unavailable, so the Headmasters suggested two of our own staff to duel against you two.” Leslie raised an eyebrow and replied, “Two of the staff? Well, that shouldn’t be too hard.” Mokuba smirked and said, “Don’t be too sure. At the strike of noon, you two are to report to the Duel Arena in the Obelisk campus. And remember: bring your A-game.”

With those words, Mokuba disconnected his call. All of us looked at each other with a look that meant the same thing: exactly WHAT did he have planned for us? Hours passed by as if they were mere minutes, and we all found ourselves standing outside of the Obelisk Duel Arena at the mentioned time of the duel….

“Wow, look at all the people! It’s like the entire island is here just to watch the duel!”, Jessie stated. “That’s because it IS the entire island, short-stack! I can’t wait to see how Prof. Kaiba makes you two squirm!”, a voice rang out. I looked out of the corner of my eye and saw Dash looking down at us with a sneer on his face. Jessie frowned when Dash said that, immediately getting hugged close by Crystal. “No need to be mean to Jessie, Dash. She didn’t do anything to you.”, Crystal stated. Dash snorted and returned his attention the field, seeing Mokuba walk out with a headset attached to his ear. “Good afternoon, Duel Academy, and welcome to this year’s special Exhibition Match! Today, we have two students here that are going to match wits against two of our own staff members in a Tag Team duel! Will they claim victory or will they walk away in defeat? Now’s the time to find out!”, Mokuba stated. ‘As well as see these two get expelled from this school!’, he thought, looking directly at Leslie and I. “It’s starting. Good luck, you two. Don’t lose.”, Crystal said, hugging me gently. “Don’t worry, sis. After this, we’re going to go back to our room and party the night away in victory!”, I replied. Leslie nodded as we watched our friends walk away to find a place to sit down.

“Now then, let us welcome our two students! First off, we have a first year Slifer slack….I mean, Slifer Red student who has been blazing a path among many of the students here. From his own class to Obelisk Blues and beyond, there is no stopping his urge to be the best! He is the son of the popular duelist Yuki Sairenji-Noroi and twin brother of Crystal Noroi: Onyx Sairenji!”, Mokuba stated. I could see on his face that he struggled to say those words, but I shook them off as I waved to everyone that was in the stands. Mokuba then turned his attention to Leslie and said, “And of course, Onyx’s teammate: a fellow first year and a Ra Yellow! She excels in the field of Turbo Duels, being number one in her class! She is the sole child of the von Krieg family, Ms. Leslie von Krieg!” Leslie walked down to the field next to me, his attention immediately being grabbed by Ben who had just arrived. I looked around and said, “So, where’s our opponents, Mokuba?”

Mokuba growled slightly and said, “That’s Prof. Kaiba. And here they are now!” Leslie and I looked behind Mokuba and saw two silhouettes walk up slowly behind them. My jaw dropped when two familiar faces appeared behind them. “Representing the Slifer Red class, I am proud to introduce the Godfather of Games himself, Joey Wheeler! And, as an extra surprise, our very own headmaster and reigning King of Games Yugi Muto shall be dueling with Wheeler! It’s a blast from the past Tag Team that has always been the top ranking team in all of the dueling world! Won’t this be exciting?!”, Mokuba stated.

“Whaaaat?! But they are the top ranking duelists in the world! How are we to beat that?! This is an obvious one-sided duel!”, Leslie exclaimed. “Now now, don’t lose your cool, Ms. Leslie. Remember, this is just an exhibition match! It’s for fun!”, Joey stated. Yugi nodded in reply and said, “Indeed. Now, what do you say, you two? Let’s have some fun!” Leslie then turned to me and said, “Onyx? What do you think?” I grinned as I strapped my Duel Disk on and said, “I say Let’s Duel!” Leslie sighed as he placed his Duel Disk on his arm, watching as Yugi and Joey did the same. “And with that, the Duel begins! Now, the rules are simple: each duelist starts with 4000 life points and neither duelist is allowed to attack on their first turn! Also, if either team’s partner loses all their life points, both teammates lose the duel! Draw five cards, and have fun!”, Mokuba stated, taking his seat next to his brother.

“LET’S DUEL!!!”, the four of us said in unison. Yugi nodded at me and said, “You can start it off, Onyx!” I grinned and replied, “With pleasure! From my hand, I activate the Field Spell Fusion Gate! With this, I can fuse monsters from my hand or field without the use of Polymerization! And next, I’ll activate the spell Cost Down to lower any monster’s level I summon by two! Of course, I have to discard a card in order to do so.” Joey nodded and said, “That’s a strange move to make, kid. I do hope it is a good one!” I grinned as I sent one card to the graveyard and replied, “Oh, no worries, it’ll be a good one! Next, I’ll play a monster in defense mode and that takes care of that!” Joey grinned and said, “It’s my move then, I draw! Due to da rules of tag duels, I can’t attack this turn. But, that don’t mean I won’t go big with this move! With Fusion Gate on da field, I shall fuse da Time Wizard and Baby Dragon in my hand to Fusion Summon Thousand Dragon! I’ll also throw down three facedowns and call it a turn! Your move, Leslie!”

Leslie looked towards me and asked, “Onyx, do you think we’ll win?” I tilted my head and said, “Too soon to tell, Leslie. But you can’t start doubting now. Just believe in your deck and the heart of the cards and we’ll never lose. Ok?” Yugi chuckled when he heard that. ‘The heart of the cards….looks like there are some others out there that live by that belief as well. Let’s see if the belief is just as strong in Leslie as it is in you, Onyx.’, Yugi thought to himself. Leslie nodded and said, “Alright then. I draw! And from my hand, I shall activate the spell Pot of Duality! With it, I can look at the top three cards on my deck, add one to my hand, and then shuffle the other two in my deck. Alright, here goes nothing!” Leslie drew the top three cards from his deck and muttered softly as he looked at his cards, then nodded as he added one to his hand and the remainder back to his deck. “Next, I’ll place four cards facedown and call it a turn! Your move, Headmaster!”, Leslie stated.

“What is Leslie doing?! Not even going to play a single monster? He’s leaving himself wide open for an attack!”, Robin stated. “Relax, Robin. That’s Leslie’s way of dueling.”, Ben stated. Crystal raised an eyebrow and said, “What do you mean, Ben?” Ben looked over at Crystal and said, “Leslie’s got the personality of a pacifist. He abhors fighting and his deck resembles that personality as well. Watch and learn.” Crystal’s attention returned to the duel when she heard Yugi said, “It’s my move. I draw! I’ll also use the effect of Fusion Gate to fuse the Gazelle, The King of Mythical Beasts and Berfomet to Fusion Summon Chimera, The Flying Mythical Beast!” Leslie smiled softly and said, “With that, I’ll activate my trap card.” Yugi’s eyes widened when Leslie stated that. “A trap!? Already?”, Yugi exclaimed. “I activate the trap card Jar of Greed! It allows me to draw one more card outside of my turn. And for double the fun, I’ll also activate Gift Card, which gives my opponent 3000 extra life points!”, Leslie stated as he draw another card from his deck.

‘Interesting. Why would she raise my life points, putting her and Onyx at a disadvantage? I wonder what she is planning.’, Yugi thought to himself as he saw his life point counter rise. “It’s still my turn, so I am going to play a monster in defense mode and add two cards facedown, ending my turn. Your move, Onyx.” I nodded as I replied, “It’s time to kick things to the next level!! I draw! Now I shall sacrifice my facedown monster in order to summon Silent Swordsman Lv5 in attack mode! Next, I’ll play a card facedown and call it a turn with that. Your move, teach!” Joey grinned as he drew and said, “I draw! And I think I’ll have my Thousand Dragon attack Leslie directly!” Leslie smiled softly and said, “Not quite. I activate the effect of Battle Fader in my hand. By Special Summoning it onto the field, your attack is negated!” Joey’s eyes widened as he exclaimed, “Not bad, Leslie! I wasn’t anticipating that. I’ll just play one card face down and call it a turn. Your turn!”

“Alright then, I draw! And from my hand, I’ll play the monster Card Car D in Attack mode! But he won’t be there for long. By sacrificing it, I can add two cards to my hand! But with that, my turn comes to an end. Your move, Chancellor!”, Leslie stated. ‘Again with drawing cards and leaving her field wide open. Hmm….unless….’, Yugi thought before saying, “It’s my move, I draw! And from my hand, I activate the spell card Mystical Space Typhoon, which allows me to destroy one Spell or Trap Card on the field! And I choose one of your cards, Leslie! The one on the right! So, what did you have hiding under there?” Leslie frowned as he revealed a Reckless Greed trap card. “If I had activated this card, I would’ve been able to draw two extra cards, but I would end up having to skip two Draw Phases.” Yugi frowned as he said, “Again with drawing? Alright then, fine! Chimera, attack Silent Swordsman Lv5!”

“What?! But Silent Swordsman is stronger than Chimera!”, I exclaimed. “Not for long! I activate the trap card Skull Dice! It lowers your monsters attack points by the number it rolls on the die times 100! And for added effect, I’ll activate Graceful Dice to boost Chimera’s attack points by 100 according to the die! Now, roll on, Graceful Dice! Looking for a high number!”, Joey exclaimed. We all watched as the die counter rolled around, finally landing on a four. “Next up, Skull Dice!”, Joey continued as the red die counter landed on a five. “Alright! Now Chimera has 2500 ATK points while Silent Swordsman has only 1800! Sock it to ‘em, Yugi!”, Joey stated. “With pleasure! Chimera, destroy Silent Swordsman Lv5!”

“Not so fast! I activate Mirror Force! It’ll redirect the attack right back at you two!”, I stated, activating the facedown trap I had. “Nice try. I activate Seven Tools of the Bandit. By paying 1000 of my life points, your trap is negated and destroyed! Continue your attack, Chimera!”, Yugi stated. “I don’t think so! I activate Waboku! With this, all battle damage is nullified and no monsters can be destroyed this turn!”, Leslie exclaimed, activating his trap as well. Yugi frowned and replied, “Alright, I guess I’ll play a card facedown and call it a turn. Your move, Onyx!”

I sighed softly and said, “Thanks, Leslie. That was really a close one.” Leslie nodded and said, “No problem, Onyx. We’re a team, so I have your back. Make your move.” I looked up at the point counter and thought, “Yugi is dominating the duel with 6000 life points while the remainder of us has 4000 points. Leslie’s field is wide open, yet something tells me he’ll have everything he’ll need soon. As for those toy, Joey has his Thousand Dragon and two cards face down while Yugi has his Chimera and three cards face down. As for me, I have Silent Swordsman Lv5 on the field and Rainbow Dragon in my hand with Elemental Hero Necroshade chilling in the graveyard. I need to even the playing field a bit. Come on, heart of the cards. Don’t fail me now!’ My attention returned to the duel as I said, “It’s my turn! I draw!” I drew a card and looked at it carefully, a wide grin appearing on my face when I saw what I drew. “Yes, it’s here! It’s Elemental Hero Neos!!!”, I exclaimed.

“What?! Of all the cards to draw, he drew one of his aces?!”, Mokuba exclaimed from his seat. “Is everything alright, little brother?”, Kaiba asked, looking at Mokuba with a concerned look. “Huh? Oh, everything is fine.”, Mokuba lied, returning his attention to the field. “Now, due to Fusion Gate still being in play, I can Fusion Summon a monster without the need of Polymerization! I choose to fuse the Elemental Hero Neos and Rainbow Dragon in my hand in order to fusion summon my ultimate warrior! Rainbow Neos, welcome to the fight!”, I stated, Rainbow Neos appearing in front of me. “Huh? I thought Onyx’s ultimate monster was Yami Allen, the Savior of Amaria?”, Jessie asked out loud. “It is. But, Onyx thought ahead for once and realized he couldn’t duel with that deck unless I was his dueling partner. It’s why he spent all his free time reworking a new deck explicitly for this duel.”, Crystal stated. Ben chuckled and said, “Even I was surprised on how well they are doing. Not to mention its Yugi AND Joey. Those two are quite possibly the best duelists on the island!” Robin smiled and said, “You can do it, you guys! Win this duel!”

I grinned and said, “Now, I’ll activate Rainbow Neos’ special ability! By removing one Spell or Trap card on my side of the field, I can have you two reshuffle your cards back into your decks.” Yugi’s eyes widened when I said that. “But that’s not possible! You have no cards on your field! …Wait. You couldn’t possibly be thinking of that!?”, he asked. “That’s right! The card I’m choosing is Fusion Gate! So, return all your Spell and Trap cards back to your decks!”, I replied. As they returned their cards, I continued and said, “Now, I think I will attack Joey’s dragon with my Neos! Hit him with everything you got!” Joey frowned as he watched his life point counter drop to 1900. “Sorry, Thousand Dragon….”, Joey said as he sent it to the graveyard. “Now for Chimera! Silent Swordsman, attack!”, I stated. “I counter with Monster Recovery!!”, Yugi stated, activating a card from his hand. “Huh?! What does that do?”, I asked. “It’s simple, really. I just return Chimera to my Extra Deck, then add my entire hand to my deck and reshuffle to draw the exact number of cards I had in my hand. But, I must re-summon a monster to take his place. Like my Big Shield Gardna in defense mode!”, Yugi replied.

“Oh no! Swodsman, stop your attack!”, I exclaimed. “Too late now! You’re taking that 300 points of damage, whether you like it or not!”, Yugi stated as my attack bounced back at me. “I don’t like it…I end my turn!”, I stated as my points lowered to 3700. “It’s my move now, I draw! And from my hand, I’m going to summon Red-Eyes B. Chick in attack mode!”, Joey stated. “I see what you are trying to do. And it won’t work! Unless you have Red-Eyes Black Dragon in your hand, that card is useless!”, Leslie replied. “Well then, it’s a good thing I have it then! I activate Chick’s special ability by sacrificing it, I can Special Summon the Red-Eyes Black Dragon directly to the field! Now, Red-Eyes, attack Leslie with Inferno Fire Blast!!!”, Joey replied, slamming Leslie with a whopping 2400 points of damage. “Leslie!”, I exclaimed, only for him to throw a hand up and said, “I’m fine, Onyx! We’re still going to win this!” Joey raised an eyebrow and said, “You sound extremely certain. What’s your secret?” Leslie stood to his feet and said, “Like I’d tell you. End your turn, Mr. Wheeler.”

“Alright then, Leslie. I end my turn. Show me what you can do!”, Joey stated. “I will! I draw!”, Leslie stated. Ben’s eyes widened when he saw the look in Leslie’s eyes. “Uh-oh, Leslie’s getting serious now.”, he stated. “Really? You mean he was going easy on Yugi and Joey this entire time!?”, Mikey exclaimed. “That’s right. And we’re going to see why very soon.”, Ben replied. “You’re a liar, Kiriyama! There is no way he can beat two of the top duelists of the world! You know what that look is? The look of fear and utter defeat!”, Dash said, overhearing our conversation. “Dash, I don’t know what you are looking at, but Leslie is definitely not afraid and he is not going to lose.”, Crystal stated, looking at him in the corner of her eye. “Onyx and Crystal will win, you’ll see.”, she stated, only to get a laugh from Dash as he returned his attention to the duel.

“Alright, from my hand, I’ll summon another Card Car D. As we already know, by sacrificing this card, I can add two more cards to my hand. And with that, I shall end my turn!”, Leslie stated. ‘I think I finally figured out what she’s up to! But none of these cards will help me! I guess there is only one thing left: to end this duel!’, Yugi thought to himself. “I can see your strategy like an open book, but it will not work! I draw!”, Yugi exclaimed. “And now, I’ll tribute my Big Shield Gardna to summon Dark Magician Girl in attack mode! And that’s not all, for I’ll activate the Spell Card Sage’s Stone in order to Special Summon the Dark Magician!”, he continued, summoning his aces to the field. “I’m star struck! He brought out two of his most popular monsters in a duel against me? Mom is never going to believe this one!”, I said in amazement. “Dark Magician, attack Onyx’s Silent Swordsman with Dark Magic Attack!!!”, Yugi stated, his monster destroying mine in a matter of seconds. “Ouch, that wasn’t friendly.”, I stated, my life points dropping to 3500.

“Now, to end it all! Dark Magician Girl, attack Leslie’s life points directly with Dark Burning Attack!”, Yugi exclaimed. “Wrong! I activate the effect of my Swift Scarecrow! By discarding this, the Battle Phase is ended!”, Leslie stated, sending his monster to the graveyard. Yugi frowned when that happened. “I place one card face down end my turn.”, he said in an annoyed tone. “Alright, it’s my move now! I draw! Now, Rainbow Neos, attack Joey’s Red-Eyes!”, I said, only to see a smile appear on Yugi’s face. “Sorry, but it won’t end that easy. I activate Spellbinding Circle to stop your monster in its tracks!”, Yugi stated. “No, Rainbow Neos!!”, I exclaimed as I saw the Circle ensnare my monster, it groaned in pain lowly. “Ugh, I guess I have to place one card face down and call it a turn!”

“My turn now! I draw! Now, Red-Eyes, let’s show Onyx how an attack really works! Attack Leslie directly!”, Joey stated. “I’m not going to let it end that easy either! I activate Negate Attack! Your attack has been nullified!”, I remarked, activating my face down track. “Fine! I end my turn! Your move!”, Joey stated. “Alright, here goes. My turn, I draw!”, Leslie stated. He looked at the card he drew and sighed softly. “This is it. This card decides the duel whether we win or lose the duel, Onyx.”, Leslie stated, looking over at me. “I believe in you, Leslie. Go for it.”, I replied with a wide smile. Leslie nodded, then looked directly at Yugi and Joey. “You’re right. You did read me like a book. Now, I can only ask this: are you ready for a big gamble, Chancellor, Mr. Wheeler?” Joey grinned and said, “Bring it on. We’re ready for anything!”

“That’s right. Now, make your move, Leslie!”, Yugi stated. “Alright then! I activate the Spell Card One Day of Peace! Now, both players must draw one card, and neither of those players can take battle damage until their next turn! Ready, Chancellor?”, Leslie stated. “Ready!”, Yugi replied. “We….DRAW!!”, the two stated.

And with that, the entire arena went ghastly silent. The silence was broken only once by a soft giggle: a giggle that was owned by Leslie himself…

“It’s here! I drew the final piece of Exodia, the Forbidden One!!”, Leslie stated. ‘What?! Impossible! He has all of them!?’, Mokuba thought to himself, a face of complete shock on his face on what was said. I looked over at Mokuba and blew a raspberry at him while holding a victory sign at him, watching as his face turned beet red in anger. “No way! There is no possible way he has all those pieces!”, Dash exclaimed in total horror. “I’ve collected all five special cards! All five pieces of the puzzle!”, Leslie stated as Exodia emerged behind him and myself. “Now, Exodia! OBLITERATE!!!!”, Leslie and I exclaimed, watching as Yugi and Joey’s monsters were destroyed, their life points dropping to ZERO.

The entire arena roared with applause and cheers after the duel ended. And with a heavy heart, Mokuba had kept his word: he kept his mouth shut about Leslie’s true gender, broke up the DAIS, and dropped the expulsion charge on Leslie and I. However, somewhere in the Exodia Purple campus….

A soft knock was heard at a door. “Enter.”, a female voice rang out from behind it. Yami walked in and bowed slightly and said, “The duel is over, Headmaster.” A pair of red eyes looked right into Yami’s gold ones and asked, “And the result?” Yami grinned as he readjusted his glasses and said, “Onyx and Leslie won through the effect of Exodia, as anticipated.” A soft chuckle rang out from the mysterious being. “Very well then. Continue watching over the twins, Yami. It still isn’t time yet.”, the Headmaster stated. “Of course, Headmaster.”, Yami replied, pulling out a bar of chocolate from his labcoat, chomping into it as he closed the door to the room, leaving the Headmaster alone in her room. She sighed softly and said, “Not yet. But soon, very soon”

With that, the day quickly came to a close. As it was said, my friends and I spent the remainder of the night celebrating our victory over Mokuba’s scheme. We knew there was more to come over the horizon, but at least we knew one thing: we were there to stay.
