Chucky's tempting of fate is answered in the form of a nasty cross-wind. I exaggerated the crab angle of the airplane to make it look more exciting. Cross-winds are a fact of life in flying, but they really throw a monkey in the wrench when someone hasn't learned how to land yet.

That was no joke. I am not a big music person, even less when it comes to popular or american music.

American musicians Richie Vallens, Buddy Holly, and Big Bopper died in a plane crash in the late 1950s while taking off into a blizzard.

Sucks like hell trying to touch down a helicopter in a tight zone with a heavy crosswind.
Chucky

I've seen guys trying to put helicopters down in gusty winds, looks like a pain.

It was definitely the most challenging of my courses. I never completed rotary wing, so only did it once & it didn't amount to anything. Still, I know well the challenge of dealing with that invisible foe of human flight. Lovely comic, too. I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Your aircraft concepts are fascinating & well-thought. I often find myself torn between admiring the aircraft when they're shown or going back to the juicy little naughty panels. >.< I'm so bad.

You should read some of the stories by Cpt. Eddie Rickenbacker of his times flying the mail in winter.  Talk about hair raising.

That's one of the aviation books I haven't read, I'll have to keep it in mind.

Chucky

The only problem with asking what else can go wrong is when you get the answer
Chucky

Oh, he got and answer all right!

Perhaps a sensible plane like an Otter.  And fuck you and your comments on American music.
Chucky
4 years, 6 months ago
Otters are quite capable planes, also named after a favorite animal in the furry world.

What did I say about American music??
HTDemetrius

Ian looked a bit frazzled with everything on that landing as well.  Even the experienced flyers respect the winds.
Chucky
4 years, 6 months ago
He has to know how far he can let Chucky go before he needs to rescue the situation, it can be a bit tricky.

moral of the story, never ask how things can go wrong

Great to see another page! And Whew! Remember, Chucky, the landings you can walk away from are good ones!
Chucky

The great ones are when you can use the airplane again. XD

man i hate cross-wind's
ShyFox100

One of the reasons I love these comics is because they spark my interest in wanting to learn how to fly a plain again. Something that, when I was younger, I dreamed about doing someday. And I still hope that one day I can make those dreams a reality!

One odd thing about the C-17 is that it's actually easier to land with say, a 10 knot cross than 0 crosswind. Of course, landing with a 30 knot cross on NVG's is still a bit challenging. ;)
Chucky
4 years, 6 months ago
I could see that actually. That little extra rudder force probably stabilizes things a bit.
woffie
4 years, 6 months ago
Crosswinds suck, and when i was learning in a Cessna, we couldn't even go out in 15 knot crosswinds.
Chucky
4 years, 6 months ago
That must have been something imposed by your flight school. I know the small Cessnas can handle up to 20 knots. It gets pretty sporty, but they can do it.
NeksusCat
4 years, 6 months ago
I bet not only the cross-wind we must to blame here.
But also Chucky's sexual frustration. x3
Kalibran
4 years, 6 months ago
15 knot crosswinds are still better than 15 diving A6M2s. Modern pilots have it so easy.
SkyBlueSloth
4 years, 6 months ago
Damn. Chucky's luck keeps getting worse. I hope things start looking up for him.
shadycat
4 years, 6 months ago
I notice Chucky is handling this in a much more mature manner than his previous unsatisfactory performance. That improved attitude should serve him well moving forward.
Chucky
4 years, 6 months ago
He sure is, glad you noticed that. :)
Tampa

Why did they even go through with the lesson if the wind was that severe. Ian is lucky Chucky didn't crash the plane, I'm beginning to wonder how qualified Ian really is for this.
Chucky
4 years, 6 months ago
A 15 knot cross-wind is well within the capabilities of the airplane. The only way Chucky will learn is to get exposed to it, Ian has to let him explore his limits.
Coop

oh poor chuck try this, "what else can go right"
Chucky

Of course, things need to 'go right' first.

Crosswinds? Why so cross. What did I do to anger you? Where are the nicewinds. =P

Nice job Chucky.
Chucky

Ha ha! Yer darn right they're cross! He tempted the gods!
graymuzzle
4 years, 6 months ago
I'll bet they do! Just one of several reasons you won't find me in private aviation planes. Nice work......
Chucky

Thanks! Nahh, small airplanes are fine. I've got lots of time in 'em and I'm still here. :)

I had the ride of my life on a commuter going into O'Hare. That turbulence can really toss a little plane around.
Chucky
4 years, 6 months ago
That it can, especially in that part of the country.
strikecentral
4 years, 6 months ago
And here I was thinking that Chucky was a bit distracted with his recent girl troubles. But no, here he had a legitimate issue with landing. Good thing Ian knows how to handle it.
Chucky
4 years, 6 months ago
Well, he was. But this is where his priorities will start being tested.
Bubbaclaw

I see how it is Chuck.
I go visit my 'Rents for the holidays and you post a new pic!

It came out well dude. :]

Ian's a good teacher, he doesn't talk down to his students and tells them exactly
the way it is. If I was taking lessons I'd really want him in the other seat.

Also LOVE your body language in that last panel. You've really improved in
making your characters seem like individuals with their own personalities and
especially with Chucky. He is defiantly one of my favorite characters on IB. :D
Chucky

Thank man, I'm glad I could make such an appealing character. Ian is a good dude.

Chucky, Chucky, Chucky, never tempt Murphy when you'll be operating equipment. Heck, never tempt Murphy any time.

Still, even if he tempts Murphy he's still smart enough to know when to call in help.
