Inventions come in many shapes and sizes. Some are incredibly infinitesimal while others can be monolithic machinations. Raw creations and astute innovations have been the foundation of civilization hither and yon since the wheel, but I’m sure any lay person can tell you that! While necessity governs most of the things invented in recent millennia, recreation can sometimes usurp the impetus – which is what inspired me to improve upon the standard inline model and draw up the plans for the Harbingers: gyroscopic transportation that also serves to augment parkour potential. Starting out as a simplistic retrofitting to help novice skaters retain their balance – I…accidentally discovered that elements of the LUNA product (particularly instantaneous viscoelastic congealment) could be used to....enhance agility. The idea was humble: create wheels that would melt at the press of a button and pour into engraved slots – personalized, if possible – and then have it eject, fasten and solidify back into wheels with the same button press.

…Did I say ‘simple’? Since this was a pet project, I couldn’t delegate the construction or testing to the respective floors – so everything had to be orchestrated in my den. I’ll spare any readers of this journal the gritty details, but if you can imagine running fifteen small-scale volcano projects in your room without any form of containment – you have a fairly decent image of what the aftermath looked and smelled like. Thank God for ventilation.

The initial test runs with the prototype Harbingers yielded phenomenal results! I never thought I’d be able to tic-tac with a set of wheels. Additional benefits of the viscoelastic-gyroscope combination are as follows.
- The previous ‘trick refractory period’ has been all but expunged. Tricks can now be chained with only seconds of delay rather than minutes.
- Aside from the occasional jarring shock when on coarse terrain, the ride is smooth as silk and balance is sustained.
- Airborne tricks are simple to pull off and you are almost guaranteed to always land on your wheels, provided you have the quad strength not to topple over.

Any further changes shall be restricted to my changelog rather than my personal journal.

After a week of assiduous tweaking, I finally feel comfortable enough to move from alpha to beta. There ARE still a few [thousand] kinks to work out and I might need to add some more shock absorbing material (plus, I found out that– but it shouldn’t take too long for me to reach a release state.

Yes, I realize what I wrote all those months ago – but anyone who’s familiar with the development process should know that when you solve one problem, five more crop up like wooden ducks in a gallery. Still, it’s finished. The Harbingers now have enough micro-stabilizers, engines, and circuitry to qualify as a MOTOR VEHICLE – yet they’re still about four kilograms and produce virtually no noise. Through all the design stages, the core concept did not change. I promised myself to make freerunning skates and, by jove, that’s what I did. I’ll be sending out tailored pairs to those who’ve shown explicit interest and see if I can find a day that isn’t incredibly frigid to test these out.

What a way to ring in the New Year! Everyone who promised to show up DID (helped along by the fact that it was 60 degree weather) and we have quite the eventful gaunt through the city (of course, I had to ferry about people, but that’s beside the point). That being said, we did have a small incident with Salem. I’m not sure how he did it, but he managed to rocket himself into a collection of trash bins despite the fact that the skates aren’t self-propelled. Note to Self: Next time, when giving Salem an instruction booklet…use pictograms.

Something tells me I won’t be marketing these… It’s far too expensive to make one pair and mass production of something like this would raise legal issues back on Hirth, but they were great fun and I managed to outshine this…’Jet Set Radio’ thing that Salem was yammering on about prior to his collision.

Up the safety protocols and I’ll think about it. ‘Course, no matter what alley I decide to travel down, at least now I have a core testing aggregate made up of some of my dearest acquaintances.

Happy New Year, people! Let’s try and make 2013 a crapton better than 2012!
