I never realized that SOAP was a real brand of running shoes.
I thought it referred to the Simple Object Access Protocol, as kind of an in-joke from the SA2 programmers.

well I can't vouch for the brand itself, but I have a very distinct memory of those shoes popping up on the market just a few months before SA2 came out.  You see, they had this arch in the middle of the sole with rollers in them so the wearer could jump on a rail and grind it without a skateboard or rollerblades.  Like healies they were just another sneaker cashing in on the skater fad when Tony Hawk was at the peak of his popularity.  I always figured that Sega (who was losing a ton of money on their last console because of competition from the PS2 and the advent of software piracy) had to product place the shoes in the game in order to get the funding they needed to make it, as at the time it was one of the last games to come out on the Dreamcast and could have been the last Sonic game ever.

Thanks for the info!  I didn't know that.
I do, of course, remember how Sony advertised the PS2 a full year before it came out, which made a lot of potential DC buyers reconsider, and wait.
