I recall watching "The Crawling Eye" on TV. The people who saw the corpse said his head was TORN OFF. There was no explanation as to where the monster came from, but they knew what they had to do.

Indeed.
Actually The Crawling Eye was called "The Trollenberg Terror" in Europe and was filmed in wide screen.
It was shown on tv here in American in pan-and-scan until just recently when they released the wise screen on DVD.
It's one of the best atmospheric sf movies ever and a personal favorite of mine. Also Forest Tucker before he stared in "F-Troop"! :D
