I'm 29.  I'll be 30 in two days.  And yet, there are people older than I am both here and elsewhere on the Internet.

Trust me.  You're not weird or creepy or anything like that.  And at least here, you're (mostly >_>) among friends.  ^_^

What events do you usually make it out to? I've been looking for an excuse to make it out to a show for a while now. I usually pass just because I don't know anyone who would go with me and it's extremely cost-prohibitive ._.

Child, this statement right here proves you're not old. At 28 I would have thought you were too young for a "Jack and Diane" reference. Greymuzzle that I am, I still have the cassingle lying around somewhere, if you know what a cassingle is.

*sips rye whiskey neat without making a face*

what can I say, my mom had a huge crush on John Cougar Mellencamp and I picked up the music from her. She was also a big fan of the Spin Doctors and My Maria by Brookes and Dunn ... and somehow I wound up loving hair metal and classic rock. Go figure. I have no idea what a cassingle is but I have owned all of the following: 8-track, 45s, cassettes, CDs and MP3s xD
shadycat
5 years, 5 months ago
A cassingle is cassette single. Basically you could buy the one good song on an album for 2.99 instead of paying ten bucks for the whole thing. They came in cardboard sleeves instead of hinged plastic cases.
Hold up. You're 28 and your MOM liked the Spin Doctors? How old was she when she had you? Twelve?

*Shrugs* I know we don't really know each other, and I guess we're more sort of acquaintances than anything else (though I would like to call you friend, you're awesome) I do get down seeing you sad, cos you're so cool and I look up to you so much, I just want you to be happy.

Sorry, rambling, silly Jake is silly...
Aogami
5 years, 5 months ago
You know what I think is really sad is when things I grew up with are now considered "classics" or "retro". I actually owned an NES when that shit was NEW. and now my 18 year old brother in law to be bought one on ebay as a collector's item.  All my favorite music plays on classic rock channels now. SOB
JakeM
5 years, 5 months ago
Bro, my music tastes lie from the 40s - early 70s (with a few exceptions) my stuff isn't even played on the radio xD At least your stuff is still considered 'cool' I mean, people still pick on me for being a fan of The Beatles at my age.

(also... idon'tknowwhataNESis ;~;)
Aogami
5 years, 5 months ago
oh sob, oh cry. NES is the acronym for Nintendo Entertainment System. It killed the Atari 2600 when it came out in 1983 and had the longest lifespan of any home videogame console to date, with it's last release coming out in 2003, although production was stopped before then. I got mine in 1990 when I was 5 years old and it saw me through some very tough times in my life.

Really? I always found it super fun and fascinating to talk to weathered veterans of the fandom, artistically inclined and not. As young as 15 I was searching them out so they could share their experiences with me and I could learn from them. I've treasured all of those acquaintances and friendships until present day- and I'm 27 now. So, I don't know. As long as you haven't outgrown it, I don't think it'll outgrow you.

When I was 15 I told people that for my 29th birthday I wanted the gift of euthanasia so I'd never have to turn thirty. It seemed so far away then, and I'm pretty sure I feel the same way now. I've got eight months left to live WOO!

In the gay community around here, 30 is referred to as "gay death."  I guess I'm just a zombie now  T.T
Aogami

Maybe that's true but I don't think it's exclusive to homosexuals. MOST communities believe that if you don't have a solid steady relationship by the time you're 30, finding new love will be extremely challenging.

Ditto on the 39  only I feel like I'm getting old...  NOT OLD just getting closer.   And I do look a lot younger than than I am, usually people have to guess at least three times before they come close.

Only thing I realize now is that I don't heal half as well as I used to and that Sucks.

The gender of your therapist doesn't matter nearly as much as their style. My gf is actually going to grad school for a Master's in counseling psychology so I get to hear about all this stuff all the time. Doesn't make me an expert by any means but different approaches work better for different people. One of the keys for any good therapist though is always building trust and rapport with their clients, so finding a therapist who you feel comfortable talking to is the most important thing and if you don't get that it's best to switch around until you do. I'm not sure where you're getting your care but generally you're allowed to make requests like "Someone in X age group" or "someone who's up on internet culture" etc.

Last time I just picked a guest who came to my psy class, she seemed safe. FF to now and nightmare. Called my primary doc gave me a number to call, they didn't pick up but their website said to call insurance company, comp doesn't have a number so I just picked at random from a list on their website. No much to compare with, the system in the US sucks big time. No wonder we have crazy people with guns, it's impossible to get help easily.
Aogami
5 years, 5 months ago
that does sound pretty lame. But if you call your insurance company they should also be able to refer you to clinics and the like that are in-network and from there you can talk to the people there when you're signing up for sessions and request a certain type of person. The first meeting with a therapist is basically an interview - both for you and for them. They want to get an overview of what you're looking for, and you need to evaluate them and see if they're a good fit. If they're not, you need to talk to the clinic staff and see about finding somebody different

I just used the insurance website, and went for the first time on Tue. I like the guy a bunch already, we totally have the same view point on a lot of subjects. We got a lot done on the first day too, he said I don't seem depressed because I get so excited about stuff but I am, no social life right now. Next Tue I think I'll get into sex stuff a bit, that's always fun to talk about. Maybe I'll mention your dilemma as well, see what he says.

I wouldn't say that acting like a child is a GOOD thing. Being mature enough to be happy when I don't get what I want, or being able to get along with people who don't share my opinions is something I pride myself on and it makes life a heck of a lot easier. That's not a quality you find in a lot of kids. But that's not to say I won't go on the rollercoaster and waste my allowance on candy >.>;;  as an adult I get the benefit of being able to pick and choose which qualities of a child-like personality are fun and which are a hindrance :P

all three of them are style influences of mine. I've actually met William Gibbons in person and he's a fantastic guy who deserves all the success and praise he's got. I wish I had his talent with a brush and his skill at telling stories. Puinkey has all the technical knowledge in the world, he's learned and still learning more from art school than I ever did and putting it to great use, plus he's creative and finds it easy to inject his art with personal emotions - something I have always struggled with. Coynu is admittedly a recent acquaintance but he works extremely fast and always puts out high quality work, he's more skilled with texturing and color selection than I am, and he's got a more creative mind for design.

I have only watched a small selection of artists working, but none of them I've watched are as fast as you are...  the ones I've seen are anywhere from probably 2-3x to 20x as slow as you... And I still like your style better

I think you've cut a nice niche for yourself. Whether you will want to still be doing this type of art long term, is a concern... but I think in terms of "success", you're doing better than most. Hopefully you don't develop carpal tunnel syndrome or something >.>
Aogami

I make sure to take breaks to rest my hands, but I do get pain in my ring finger sometimes after about 3-4 hours - I sprained it twice as a kid. I'm not sure if my speed is such a good thing though ... a lot of other artists focus on making sure everything looks good and time isn't really a concern, but I've put time as one of my top priorities for so long I sometimes feel like it's damaged my ability to take things slow, think critically and make good solid design decisions and polished artwork
KitRyuu
5 years, 5 months ago
No one beats your speed with that level of quality. Sure not every picture you draw is perfect but those imperfections are hard to spot and you always draw a shitload at once. I'm frankly amazed anyone can do what you do.  Also you may not draw at as high a quality as some but each drawing there is always something (big or small) that can be learned and with your speed you can learn a lot in 1 day. Sure if you rush you may not pick up that experience as easily but you have tons of room to take it slower. If drawing slower is where you need work then maybe every now and then spend a longer time on a personal picture.

Also another suggestion is rather that view that speed as a weakness you can probably draw some things multiples times to try alternative ideas.

I would kill to have your speed.
Aogami
5 years, 5 months ago
Well obviously the speed isn't a weakness but I dunno, sometimes I just think that I could stand to work on other areas more and I feel lost in a sea of talented people and I don't know how they think of the things they do

I'm older than all the previous commenters and I act younger than most everyone I know.  If that creeps out the teenagers, it's too bad.  You're only as young as the one you feel.  =^.^=

The thing that made me feel old was when I met a guy I went to high school with and he was losing his foot to diabetes.
Aogami

OLD COMMERCIAL FOR OLD PEOPLE :P

jkjk still think your a great guy, you've always been a kind person that I know of. Age of mind doesn't seem to really appear through your personality, You have always seemed young to me. I just turned 26 and truly thought you were younger than I, and not because of your art at all, just mainly your kindness.
Aogami
5 years, 5 months ago
lol are you trying to say that old people are generally mean? xDDD

I'm just kidding ... actually I think that the older I get, the nicer I want to be to everyone. Children can be extraordinarily cruel, and learning to be respectful of others and how to socialize and interact with people you don't necessarily agree with or even like is a skill that takes a LONG time to hone. I've always been hyper sensitive about how I'm perceived by others, and I have panic attacks when I think people are thinking or saying nasty things about me, but it's only the last few years that I really feel like I'm starting to get the hang of interacting with people and not stepping on their toes

30 here. My libido may have been going down a little since my mid-20s, but other than that, even at my age I've never been able to sustain myself so far. With two private educations, the most I ever get are short internships (3-6 months) that pay well below even just what I'd have to spend on rent. I'm self-employed now and still don't make more than a few hundred bucks well below my rent in social housing.

I don't know what you're talking about with the more talanted than you teenagers, you're one of the best artists on here in my opinion. As for getting old, I should hope 28 isn't too old to still be enjoying life or to be on here. If it is I've only got a few more years left, I'm 21 almost 22. Seriously, I'd wager that a lot of the best and most popular artists in the fandom are in their mid 20s to 30s, it takes time to get to be good and to become popular.
Aogami
5 years, 5 months ago
there's always somebody younger and more talented. That's just the way the world works. Records were made to be broken. And now that I'm older people expect more of me, my peers are also more experienced and talented and I'm hardly competitive xD I'm just happy I can eke out a living doing it
ShukenFlash
5 years, 5 months ago
As long as enjoy what you do that's the half the battle right there. And even if they're "more talented" that doesn't mean better. Your style is different than theirs and you draw different things so there will always be people who like your art better than theirs. Just look at how many watches and favs you have, you're ranked as one of the top artists on the site. If that doesn't convince you that you're pretty darn good at drawing I don't know what will
Aogami
5 years, 5 months ago
Well ... I mean yeah it's a bit of an ego trip to look at those stats but then I remember that this is a very small site, the community is tiny in comparison to SoFurry and FurAfinity and most other competing sites. My watchlist isn't even at 10k people here - it's great for IB but for anywhere else on the internet it's pretty sad actually, especially for someone who does what I do professionally. On FA most artists who are considered popular have closer to 30k+ watchers and on deviantart it gets into the hundreds of thousands.

29 here, and and to be honest if anyone wants to call me 'old' for it then that fine(Though I doubt anyone actually will). The simple truth of the matter is this. Age isn't a right you're given at birth, it is a privilege you earn each day by surviving.

So I say, if you're older then others you meet, don't feel bad about it, rather choose to take a bit of pride in that fact and maybe even flaunt it once in a while so you can smile about it. But that's just my stand point on age.
Aogami

lol, Dude, I'm 43 now ( since Halloween - BOO!) and I didn't meet (meat?) my boyfriend until I was 35.  We've been together nearly 8 years now.  It's not the number, its what you do with it.  And I have to think, your body of work is amazing.  Experience is not only enormously important, it's tremendously sexy (all the little twinkies love love love LO-OOO-OVE cuddling on daddies).

Besides, it's older guys like us that actually built the fandom in the first place.  You aren't old, you aren't over the hill.  You are Merlin, you are Tom Brady.  You aren't the fever and recklessness of a teenager, you're the spirit of a teenager with that force that lies within.  You are power tempered with skill earned the only way that really matters.

And, to top all of this.... You are still kickin, Dude.  You're beating the odds daily and certainly blowing us all away ( hummm, imagine that image, lol).  You inspire me to keep drawing and learning to do it right, Aoi.  Stick to your guns and don't fear the reaper.  Make him fear you!

BOC can sing my anthem anyday. I'm actually bi and currently have a girlfriend but I'm sure you're right about all the sexy young mens. The girl I'm with now is actually my first sexual partner and we've been together almost five years (I had a string of unsuccessful, unhealthy, terrible relationships that went nowhere before that so I guess I started late.) So I don't really have that experience of being with a bunch of people to make me sexier. xD

I didn't really help build the fandom, I sort of jumped onto it because I thought furry art was sexy and it seemed like a good way to make money. Good thing for me I was right on both counts haha

Guess I'll break my "Super private guy" silence streak to comment :P

Not gonna say anything you don't know here, but being able to squeeze a living out of doing art (Let alone having things be on one's own terms to the extent that you have it) is a huge accomplishment that many artists fail to achieve regardless of their age, skill, or education. Having gone through the whole art school thing myself (And getting that special piece of paper in the end after many years), I know a huge amount of people who aren't able to feed themselves from their art and it's definitely not for lack of talent.

It's not really fair to yourself to make these direct comparisons of "Person X is better than me at art" and to assess your value on that alone. The qualities that have enabled you to make a living off your art (and the qualities that make you a wonderful person to commission) is the summation of your communication skills, demeanor, self-driving-ness, flexibility, organization, and most definitely your wealth of artistic talent. I know it's human nature to compare yourself to others, but people are just too damn unique to figure it out. Having commissioned ~110-130 artists at this point, I don't even have to factor in all of those attributes if I want to figure out who tops that list. I can say you're that person by going off of money spent alone, because as you said in an earlier post, "They keep coming back" :P
Aogami

Now I'm not saying that I'm not proud of myself or what I've accomplished ... I am. Mostly what I'm lamenting here is that I can't hang out in paintchat or RP groups on deviantart unless I don't tell people how old I am because it makes me the grandpa of the group and people think I'm gross and weird and creepy. :(  Also, I would not object to having my 16 year old body again tyvm xDDD
wyv7789
5 years, 5 months ago
Haha, well from some of the comments you made earlier it seemed like you were weighing age a little too much without considering those other things. Don't do that :P

I get what you mean though. I would love to be the 18-year-old me who was super fit and worked at a hardware store, throwing around bags of concrete like it was trivial and looking the part. (While keeping all the knowledge and experience I've gained since then, obviously). Sounds like we just need to exercise a little more lol.

You can't change your age, of course, but those people who get creeped out by it will find themselves in the same situation before they know it. It feels like I was in my late teens just a couple years ago, yeesh (I'm just a tad younger than you).

"I used to be with it, then they changed what it was. Now, what I'm with  isn't "it", and what's "it" seems weird and scary to me. IT'LL HAPPEN TO YOUUU

sobbbb so true. So many old people that can't use computers and stuff. I feel like our generation has stayed "with it" longer because so much of how we socialize and interact with the world around us is based on technology and our parents didn't have that, but someday soon I'll be scared and confused by what all the crazy teens are doing these days too I'm sure *sigh*

Back in those days it was common to attempt to hard localize anything with a reference to foreign culture and a lot of the original text/dialog tended to get lost, but somehow the games still managed to become classics and favorites here so they must've done something right.  I have to admit that I love to read very direct translations of anime, manga and video games because I've studied the Japanese culture and language extensively and I feel that I have a decent enough understanding to get the jokes and have the cultural references flow smoothly, but most people still don't and I can understand why a translator would want to sacrifice accuracy for fluidity sometimes. It's a balancing act. My favorite example of great localization is in the re-translation of Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions for PSP. The first effort on PS1 was ABYSMAL, but I loved the shit out of that game anyways - the translation was very direct and often made little sense. The redone version changes a lot of the dialog to Game of Thrones style old englishy speak, but the FEEL of the dialog is just so much more right, it FITS the world, the characters, the mood and setting. The game is not in any way based on Japan with the exception of a few small homages like the samurai and ninja classes, it's much more of a European flavor so this kind of localization makes sense - consider then Final Fantasy VI, one of the games Mr. Woosley allegedly screwed up so badly - it's not Japanese at all either, it's more steampunk high fantasy. I think Cyan is the only character with any real claim to being anything like Japanese at all. So can you really blame him for trying to make it feel less distinctly Japanese? ... probably :P I've never played a "good" translation of the game so I have nothing to compare to but what can I say, I liked the game I played.

Ted Woosley would call you an elitist bastard for daring to suggest that "items used in battle are items used in battle" isn't a quality translation, Aoi!

You have to remember, neither was I. I was blind. Then I read an interview with Woosley where he basically blamed the fans for daring to suggest that a man who knew no Japanese wasn't qualified to be a TRANSLATOR. I started learning Japanese precisely because of people like Woosley. My goal was to become the Anti-Woosley. My style of translation is to be as direct as possible, but be flexible enough to allow for substitutions where there isn't a direct English word for the Japanese word in question.

His wikipedia article says he has a Master's in Japanese Lit, but I guess that doesn't mean he's qualified to translate. He actually doesn't know how to speak the language? What'd he do, have Japanese slaves translate and then do the localization himself? xD
Adamkun
5 years, 5 months ago
My understanding was, he knows no Japanese, was given the script and told to have it done in three days. So naturally, it's the fans fault. We made him take a job he wasn't qualified to do and couldn't have done properly in the given time even if he was qualified.

Sounds like the blame lies with him for saying he could do it, but more with his employers who 1 - chose the wrong person for the job and 2 - had an unreasonable deadline

All those games, they sit on my "I am awesome!" shelf ;). Admittedly, some are reprints. I never owned the original SNES cart because I never had the console. But the DS version, uuuh yessss. I mean of CT. And FF 3 (6), I got on my olde trusty GBA. Still. What fine and awesome games.

Aoi can tell you, I'm a huge fan of the SMT series. I played SMT I and II using emulators when Gideon Zhi and Masakado translated them back in the early 2000s! I also played Persona 2: Innocent Sin in Japanese.

I opened mine ^o^ ... I am actually playing that for the first time, and I'm loving every moment of it. Only downer for me is, that I'm never sure if I miss any important details if I do *not* rotate the view with every screen's length. :/ It's a bit of a hassle to do it all the time. But yeah, loving it. Wish I had P4, but I also got P3 as a collectors Ed for PSP.
Aogami
5 years, 5 months ago
I have P4G but I haven't played it yet either. SIGH. And I never did finish P3P ... mostly because I wanted to get every single social link on a single playthrough and it's damned near impossible unless you have the entire game planned out in advance, and there are no guides which do this well.
Meowz
5 years, 5 months ago
I want to finish P2 first, and then restart P3P, but yeah, it's long, very large a game. ... Considering I'm still getting more and ever more complex PC rpg's every month by now, I should perhaps start playing some games on easy and with a guide to just at least HAVE played through most of them once. I'm set for life with games twice over. ;)

As a young child I made the terrible mistake of asking for a Sega Genesis instead of a SNES for christmas, and that was the time when you really had to choose because that was when your parents would say things like "You already have a Natender thing AND I just bought you the Sega thing so WHY do you want me to spend another $300 for the ... what is it? SUPER Natender thing now? Oh and the games are $70 apiece? Boy you better get a job because I've met crack addicts with less expensive habits."

So tl;dr I never owned an SNES and I was super jelly of all my friends who did but I did get the experience of playing all those great games TuT

That really reminds me about how I felt when most people around me had a Commodore 64, and I had an Amstrad. That thing had a plethorra of awesome games, but no -- it did never receive ports of Maniac Mansion or Zak Mc Kracken. And boy oh boy was I crazy for those. And then, other buddies suddenly had the Amiga 500 and -- Monkey Island. We played those almost exclusively for weeks on end and I was crazy and couldn't stop. Suddenly my brother got a cheap (expensive!!) MS-DOS based 286 PC with a grayscale screen.

It rocked my world.
So yeah the graphics was dull.
The sound was ... barely there.

But DAMN it *had* Monkey Island. I "cracked" my bros password protection (by simply booting off a DOS disk or pressing Ctrl-C while booting as if my last life in the arcade depended on it), and played through the final chapter alone, in secrecy. I even installed that game where he'd never find it... in C:\DOS\ ... yeah his 286 had a 20 MB harddrive. He was so proud! I kinda felt bad for doing things like that but I remember, I really had no other option... even brothers sometimes need fun. ;)

Meanwhile the Amstrad collected dust. Everytime I was with friends I listened in Awe to C64 music, all the good pieces, and recorded them on tape, much to my friends amusement. They just heard bleeds. I loved chipmusic when it was fresh. Today this is like, retro and it's in style to like it because suddenly people accept the artwork behind it ... like with pixel art. But I adored it back then all the same. It got me a lot of weird looks, I tell you. :/ Not every time the nice ones. I remember one buddy of mine, who was allowed to meet me anymore because I was a "bad influence" for liking video games so much. Even though I didn't play many of the shitty games, I appreciated the art and music. Even on my Amstrad, but it had terrible music capabilities by comparison.

TL;DR

Life was awesome in the 80s/early 90s.

haha kids today just need a lot more STUFF to have fun. xD  I had a Pong console that I used to play, but the NES was my first real one. I actually got an Atari 2600 later on and loved the shit out of it but the NES was my lord and master for a long time. I played it until the spring broke and I had to wedge shit in there to get the carts to stay down. I had a lot of similar experiences with game graphics and music even though it was a later generation ... in highschool I used to hang out on OCRemix.org all the time just listening to great remixes of all the old themes I'd come to know and love, and play ROMs of all those Japanese games I couldn't get for SNES when I was younger x3

I still have a lot of work to do on myself as an artist before I even come close to being happy with what I'm producing even a fraction of the time. That's probably the one downside to being in the arts is that no matter how good you get, there's always some way for you to get better and if you stop reaching for it and become happy with what you're making, you stagnate and people will stop liking your work

I'm 37, will be going on 38 this coming Feb.

Back when I was in my teens and buying Disney comic books such as the Donald Duck comics. They mentioned the birthdays of a few of their artists. Those guys were in their late 80s and early 90s. Those guys drew the best looking comics.

I don't know which younger artists you think your creeping out but to really creep'em out would require drawing stuff so gory that Death Metal bands would be falling over themselves to hire you to draw album covers for them.
Aogami

Dude, you are 28. You're allowed to feel old when you're in your late 40s, not now.
OK, so I'm younger than you. I'm 20. I was born in 1993. They talk about the 90s and it still sound like yesterday to me, even though almost 14 years have passed. Seriously.
I'm older than most of my friends, see. They're also more talented than I am in most things. And I don't feel bad about it. That's life, you know; people are just born with a talent (YOU were born with a talent, you're a great artist and, from what I've seen, also a pretty nice guy).
Art communities are for ART people, not for young people. Also for fans, like myself; my skills are writing and music, I suck at drawing, I'm mostly here to watch people's arts (mostly yours because I admire your work).
Sorry about the too-long text, BTW. The point is: don't care about your age, just enjoy life.
Sincerely yours,
Jackie.
