History of Vesta:
After the revolution the parahumans that settled on Vesta initially decided to live with as few changes as possible, the automated food dispensers that fed them under the heel of the corporations remained running and gave everyone a set amount of processed algae. But now no one had to work. This system seemed to function for some time, but eventually things began to break down as the maintenance bots came to encounter situations that they lacked the intelligence to deal with, and fewer and fewer volunteers to repair them. Eventually a group of concerned technicians declared themselves "the Repairman's Guild" and decided that they would handle all repairs to the habitat. Some grew to believe that they deserved compensation for their efforts and began to demand payment, at first just for work on one's personal habitation, in the form of portions of some person's rations, or maybe if they made something as a hobby a sample of their products. Eventually some people started mining qcoins like some of the more capitalistic habitats and offering them as payment, or for products made by others, hence a monetary economy re-emerged. Crime, which had existed since the time of the corps but not at such a scale before, increased as economic stratification came to emerge from the anarchy, sparking the formation of the Protector's Guild, who became full time keepers of the peace in Vesta for those who paid for their services.
As immigrants arrived and the colony spread the Protectors fractured, each division in charge of a different district. In addition the Guilds became more and more corrupt as they grew in size, often threatening residents of their areas who did not subscribe to their services. More Guilds formed, encompassing professions such as asteroid mining, cultivation of exotic foods, several inventors guilds in various techs, chemists, physicians, artists. Then came Griggs, with a collection of the rare biofabrication tanks that the corps had used to create them.
Griggs intended to use these tanks to form a Guild that would produce clones of Vesta's sterile populace for a high price. But it would by necessity be different from the many Guilds that comprised only those of a single occupation, this one would need dozens of parahumans of differing specialties, technicians, biologists, doctors, fabricators to duplicate the tanks, counselors, etc. Some thought it sounded too much like one of the hated corporations that had enslaved their clade for over a decade, not a Guild in the slightest. Eventually, however, the heads of the Guilds decided that they needed Griggs if they were to survive in the long term, the fact that the first parahuman children to come out of his biofabricators were clones of the Guild heads was surely coincidence. But they could not call it a Guild so they dubbed Griggs' organization "The Society for the Preservation of Parahuman Species" and stated that it was neither a Guild or a Corporation, but something different.
Griggs grew and raised his own clone, Jakob Griggs, and taught him how to run the Society, but forbade him from consuming any form of human media for fear that it would contaminate him. When Jakob grew enough for his clonefather to grant him some control over the Society's workings things began to change. Some say that Griggs learned that his progeny was plotting to seize control of the entire colony, but he died in an unfortunate accident with one of the airlocks before he could inform anyone of this. The heads of the Protector's Guilds were given special discounts and other incentives on clones, encouraging them to commission additional offspring and giving them the largest "families" on the asteroid. As their families grew the Protector's Guilds became more strict in enforcing the "peace" in the colony, some even noticed Guild enforcers brutalizing parahumans that had committed no known crimes but had simply criticized the Society. Many began to sarcastically refer to the Protectors as "Houses" or "Clans", eventually the latter term came to be adopted by the Protectors themselves, the Guild assigned to Hab 2 became Clan Wolf, Hab 7's Clan Marquez. The seeds of Vesta's downfall were planted.
