Yup. Its a 3DS without the 3D. At firs tI thought it was silly, but then someone pointed out that its cheaper to make, and likely will sell for less. Whats more, some people can't handle the 3D, or can't use it due to lack of depth perception. They probably made the 2DS after people started realizing that people who can't handle or percive the 3D would be paying extra for something they can't even use.

Using one right now , cause my old 3ds broke. :3 They honestly have a better top screen quality than the 3ds. It's weird but I enjoy mine more than my old broke 3ds x3.

Yeah, that little gimmick has been annoying the living crap out of me.

Because you own a 3ds?

Because it's a system that you don't need?

Because it doesn't have 3D?

Because it doesn't fold so that when it gets dropped, it doesn't break in half?

Its not really a gimmick. The 2DS is cheaper to make, and if I recall, cheaper to buy. Whats more, some people can't handle the 3D, or can't use it due to lack of depth perception. Daneasaur makes a good point with the not breaking in half too, although it would be harder to carry around if it doesn't fold. Guess maybe it slides down or something. Another good name for it would be 3DS light. But then that would be misleading, as it has no 3D.

Along with not being able to see the 3D, there is also the fact that children under 7 shouldn't use the kind of 3D that the 3DS uses.  That's why there timing the sale of this with a game that does well with that age group, Pokemon X/Y.  I've heard many out there say, "Well, that's what the slider on the side is for.", but that don't help when mom and dad look around and hear about how it's not good for there kid's eyes and don't look into it further.  Overall, I say options are never a bad thing, just hope it isn't confusing the market too much though as many seem to think that many are going to get confused by all the different DSs on the market, and that could be true, after all, how often does software on system with a 3 work on the system with a 2... it's allmost as confusing as Xbox one coming after 360.

my 3DS has the 3d slider off like 90% of the time
I don't like the 2DS because it doesn't fold... I carry my 3DS in my pocket a lot, make a foldable 2DS then I'll bite
and then it only has one speaker, I haven't tested it out much but I tried SMT4 and that game uses surround sound quite a bit (like attacks going left to right go from left speaker to right speaker, dialog/sounds coming from one side only sometimes) and it was completely different sounding.
