Chapter 7

It was another typical day in the Treasure Guild facility as Digitamamon was helping the teams acquire mission.  A few of the members were waiting by the entrance looking outside while the rest of their team was getting ready.  Suddenly, they noticed something coming in their direction and fast.  As it grew bigger and clear it was apparent that it was a pair of Digimon running as fast as they could.  It was Flint and Rex and they looked quite alarmed.  As they reached the front entrance they both tried to enter and get in, but the entrance was too narrow for them both to fit.

“Get out of my way,” groaned Flint.

“I got to the door first,” argued Rex.

They continued to bicker while everyone in the guild just stared at them.  Inevitably, they managed to squeeze inside.  When they got in they saw they had made a spectacle of themselves.

“Nice, going Rex,” moaned Flint.  “Now they all think we’re nuts.”

“No.  It is your fault,” complained Rex.

“Would you two stop fighting and just spit it out,” shouted Digitamamon, upset by the disruption they were causing.

Flint and Rex stopped arguing and looked at one another.  They had indeed acted childish, but it was only because they were full of anxiety.  They had come because they needed help.  Looking at each other they nodded before shouting, “Dan’s been kidnapped!”

Earlier that day, at their campsite Flint, Dan, and Rex were enjoying breakfast.  They were excited since they were finally going to be upgraded to Rank 2.  It meant they would be able to go on harder missions, but it also meant they were one step closer to their dream of finding the Infinity Zone.

As they were finishing up a hooded figure arrived.  Flint and Rex looked at the stranger with curiosity, but Dan quickly broke out into a cold sweat and his eyes bugged out.

The hooded figure removed his hood revealing himself to be a Frigimon.  “I am here for Dante,” he said in a serious tone.  “I know he is here.”

“Dante?” asked Flint.  “Never heard of him.  How about you Rex?”

“No clue,” he replied.

“What about you Dan?” questioned Flint.  He waited, but got no response.  “Dan?”  Rex and Flint turned to see Dan was so frightened that he was shaking.  “Are you all right?”

When Flint and Rex tried to calm him down he returned to his senses.  “Oh, I’m sorry.  Let me take care of this.”  He said those words with an undertone of sorrow.  As he got up to talk with the Frigimon Dan and Rex had a strange sensation that he was leaving them behind.  They watched as Dan led their guest away to talk privately.  They couldn’t hear the conversation, but when it seemingly ended they just stood there as if they were waiting for something.

The sky suddenly grew dark.  Flint and Rex assumed it was just cloud passing in front of the sun, but then they saw a ladder fall from the sky in front of Dan and the Frigimon.  At once Dan started to climb it with the icy Digimon following behind.  Flint and Rex looked up and were shocked to see the thing blocking out the sun was an enormous blimp.

“Where are you going?” shouted Flint as he returned his attention back to Dan.  He had already quite a bit up the ladder.  Flint and Rex ran for their friend, but the ladder went out of reach as the blimp gained altitude.  The propellers on the sides started spinning and cause the blimp to fly off.

They gave chase, but it was a futile attempt as it kept getting higher and farther away.  They had just about given up hope when they noticed something seemed to have come off of the blimp.  It grew larger and larger as it made its way to the ground.    Before long they realized it was a parachute and it was likely someone was riding it to the ground.  They didn’t know if it was Dan, but they raced to investigate.  The parachute got tangled in a tree on the way down suspending the rider in midair.  Flint and Rex were disappointed that it wasn’t Dan.  Instead, it was an Impmon.  The same one they met a few days ago, Jack.  In his arms was a suitcase full of his ill gotten RAM.  He was struggling violently to free himself only getting himself more tangled.

“Oh, come on,” he complained.  “Plenty of open land and I had to get snagged in a tree.  Typical.”

“Hey, you’re not Dan,” said Flint, unenthusiastically.

Jack looked down at the two Digimon who were standing below him and quickly recognized them as the ones who beat his former team not long ago.  “Hey, no fair ganging up on me, especially when I’m stuck in this tree.”

“Why would we fight you?” asked Rex.  “We’ve never met you before.”

“You really don’t know me?” asked Jack, both relieved and annoyed that they were clueless.  They shook their heads.  “Well, could you help me down then?”

“Sure, but do you know where that blimp you were on is going?” asked Flint.  “Our friend was taken aboard and we have to rescue him.”

“If your friend was taken you better give up on him,” explained Jack.  “That blimp belongs to the Excavation Guild.  You do not want to get involved with them.”

“Never heard of them,” said Rex calmly which irritated Jack that they were discussing it so casually.  “Are they like the Treasure Guild?”

“Hardly,” shrieked Jack.  “They don’t hire a bunch of teams to do the work for treasure.

Their motives are shrouded in secrecy, but they believe that they can conquer the Digital World with sites.  They claim the treasure hidden in them hides the true treasure.”

Flint and Rex exchanged glances then turned to the Chimera Fang around Flint’s neck, wondering if there was any connection.  They still didn’t see how Dan was mixed in or who this Dante person was, but they didn’t have any time to waste.  Still, they couldn’t save Dan alone.  They needed help.

“You think anyone at the Treasure Guild can help us?” suggested Rex.

“It’s worth a shot,” replied Flint.  And with that they ran off, forgetting about Jack entirely.

“Hey, you guys!” shouted Jack angrily. “I’m not done explaining stuff yet and you forgot to let me down!”

He struggled violently to get them to come back in a futile effort as they had already begun stampeding all the way to the Treasure Guild facility.  The branch creaked and cracked against his struggles and soon enough snapped.  Jack landed on his butt right before the branch conked him over the head knocking his lights out along with giving him a sizable lump on his head.

As Flint and Rex finished recounting their events they had noticed there was a lot more room now.  “Where did everyone go?” asked Flint.

“You scared them away,” shouted Digitamamon annoyed.  “Nothing good will come from challenging the Excavation Guild.  Even the higher ranked teams won’t take them on.  You might as well give up.”

“We can’t,” cried Rex.  “Dan is our friend.  We’ve been through too much to let him go so easily.  We’re begging you.”

Rex’s words seemed to have the adverse effect on the Digimon as the rest began filing out.  “Well, there goes the rest of them,” said Digitamamon.  “Thanks a lot.”

“It doesn’t matter if they won’t help us,” said Flint.  “We’ll track down that blimp and save Dan ourselves.”

“Throwing caution to the wind to save a friend isn’t exactly a smart idea, but it’s cool because you care,” came a familiar voice.  Flint and Rex turned to see Fonz was there afro and all.  “And groveling like that isn’t cool.  Have a bit more pride than that, man.  Overall, I say there’s enough coolness between Flint here for the both of you so I’ll give you a hand.”

“Thanks,” said Rex, offering his hand for Fonz to shake.  He walked past Rex and instead shook Flint’s hand.

“Thanks for helping, but we a little in the dark about how to track that blimp down,” commented Flint.

“That’s no problem,” explained Fonz.  “Use your DigiPad to send an emergency broadcast to the teams in the area.  Tell them to report any blimps and we’ll pick up the trail in no time.”

The Frigimon led another hooded figure through the blimp to where he left Dan.  His moved nervously as he finally made it to the door.  He knew how unforgiving this guy was to incompetence, he was his master and leader of the Excavation Guild after all; he had big plans and frowned upon any delays.  What made the Frigimon so worried was that he was sent to retrieve Dante and instead brought Dan.  He had wanted Dan to tell him where Dante was before returning, but he refused to take no for an answer.  He wanted to meet with his master in person to divulge such important information.

The door opened and they saw Dan waiting at the opposite end of a round table.  Once again he had an unusual look in his eyes.  This one was as cold as ice.

“This is not Dante,” said the hooded figure in a demonic tone.  Without even turning at the cowering Frigimon he grabbed him by the neck and lifted him up to the ceiling, revealing his arms were deceptively longer than compared to his body.  “I said to bring Dante.  Does this even look like a Monodramon?”

“That’s enough,” said Dan.  “Drop him, Faust.”  He did as he said, but not because he was told to.  First, it was because giving him such an order immediately turned his rage to him; secondly, it was because he knew his name, a detail only a select few actually did.  Now he was curious as to whom this Guilmon truly was.

He released the Frigimon, forgetting all about him like and insignificant detail in the grand scheme of things and the fearful Digimon crawled out the door and closed it.  Faust then removed his hood revealing himself as a MalevoDevimon.  His form was similar to that of a regular Devimon, but he had streaks of crimson over his body as well and seemed all the more evil because of it.  He removed the rest of the robe and took a seat opposite Dan.  He was quiet for a long time as he placed the fingertips of his hands against each other.  He contemplated his thoughts for a while staring into Dan’s eyes while Dan peered back into his.  The stare down ended with but a simple question.  “Are you Dante?”

The response was a bit more cryptic.  “I am Dan, but I am also Dante.”

“That is impossible,” said Faust logically.  “The Dante I knew was a Monodramon.  It should be impossible for you and him to be the same.”

“Then allow me to explain to you what happened on that day,” Dan replied.

“In due time.  First I need the artifact you found,” stated Faust.  “No matter what happened to you there’s no way you would lose something so important.  And judging from the way you remained hidden from us all this time I doubt you would so carelessly bring it with you.  No.  You would rely on someone else’s strength to protect it better than you could.  That’s why you were so eager to work for me back then after all.”  He grinned at Dan, expecting him to reflexively react and give something away.  Dan didn’t know if he did react or if he just knew the answer before deducing all this.  “You gave it to one of your new ‘teammates’ to hold onto didn’t you?  You planned to give it to them and then leave it with them that way it would virtually vanish, but I’m guessing something caused a change of plans since you must have had enough time to leave by now.  Did you discover something important about the artifact that prevented you from leaving or was it that you just grew attached to them?  And here I thought archeology was your only friend.  How amusing.”

“That’s enough!” shouted Dan.  That one outburst caused him to pant heavily.  He gritted his teeth in disappointment.  He knew Faust was as sadistic as he was analytical.  Dan tried to keep his cool to prevent him from seeing right through him.  If he found another’s weakness he wouldn’t hesitate to do the vilest and cruel things to get what he wanted and right now he wanted two things; the artifact he had given Flint, the Chimera Fang, and Dan himself, or more accurately Dante.

Flint and Rex were running with all their might to catch the blimp.  They were following every lead they were sent without hesitation.  Fonz walked after them.  He didn’t have to run to keep up as all their running had already worn them ragged and they needed to rest a lot to catch their breath.

“You guys shouldn’t waste all your energy in just finding the blimp,” Fonz explained. “The enemies we’re about to face are stronger than anything you’re used to.”

“Don’t worry about us,” panted Flint.  “We grew up in Zip Town so we’re no strangers to tough fights.”

Fonz raised an eyebrow seeming quite perplexed.  “Zip Town?  You mean those slums miles away.  I've heard stories about that place and the only Digimon who leave that place and drifters and criminals.  You two don’t strike me as either.  You’re both a little too goofy.”

“I’ll have you know we were part of the toughest gang in town,” bragged Rex.  “Why one time…”

“We don’t have time to walk down memory lane,” interrupted Flint.  “We’re on a mission.  Remember, rescuing Dan?”

“But we haven’t even seen a glimpse of the blimp since we started the search,” explained Rex.  The wind was starting to pick up quite a bit as they were talking.  “We don’t even know if it landed yet.”

The wind quickly grew incredibly fierce till it was like a tornado.  “What’s going on?” shouted Flint, trying to speak through the wind.

“Look above us,” called Fonz. It was the blimp hovering just above the treetops.  The wind was coming from the propeller blades as they spun wildly to steadily lower it down.

“We found them,” stated Rex.  “Or did they find us?”

“Uncool line,” commented Fonz.

“Enough of that you two,” ordered Flint.  “Something’s coming out of it.”

As the blimp maintained its altitude the fans came to a stop.  Flint and the others were able to focus now and see just who was coming out.  It was a group of six Bakumon, all of them with the Excavator’s Guild mark on their bodies.  The ghosts hovered just out of reach of them.

“What did you guys take our friend?” asked Flint.

“Whatever the boss wants, the boss gets,” answered one of the Bakumon.  What he wants now is you guys.”

“But weren’t there only two of them?” commented another Bakumon.

“Yeah, a strong one and a childish one,” stated a third.  “Where’d the cook one come from?”

“Who cares,” said the fourth.  “We only need one of them and the artifact.”

“There it is on the strong one’s neck,” shrieked the fifth one.

“Hey,” shouted an irritated Rex.  “If Flint is the ‘strong one’ and Fonz the ‘cool one’ that means I’m the ‘childish one.’  How do you even know if I’m childish if we’ve never met before?  Not that I am of course, but that isn’t the point.”  Rex continued to run his mouth moving further away from the point he was trying to make.

“He’s like an annoying yappy dog,” groaned the sixth one.  “Let’s just get the ‘strong one’ and get out of here.”

With that they flew down at Flint, swarming all around him.  He tried to fight them off, but it was like swatting at gnats and he could land a hit.  Rex rushed in to help, but they took off into the air before he could reach him.  This didn’t stop him as he leapt as high as he could to reach Flint.  Desperately, Flint managed to free his arm and reached for Rex.  Their hands connected, but only for a moment as their hands slipped and Rex fell to the ground, body slamming into it.

As the Bakumon made their way back to the blimp Fonz made his move.  He removed a beaded bracelet on his right arm and as it was removed the pieces snapped together forming a bow.  He then reached into his afro and ruffled it up creating a small static charge in it.  With a flick of his wrist he pulled out the electricity and it formed into an arrow on the bow.  He pulled back on the string and aimed at the Bakumon.  He needed to focus to avoid hitting Flint; total silence and concentration.

“Wait, don’t attack!” cried Rex flailing his arms and getting in the way of his target.

“Get out of my way,” he shouted, trying to get past Rex to no avail.  Getting aggravated, he pushed Rex out of the way and quickly tried to get the shot while they were still outside.  As he lined up the shot he was about to let the arrow soar when Rex jumped on his back to stop him.  Fonz flailed to shaking him off and Rex held on tight, gripping Fonz’s face and hair for support.  He didn’t let go until it was too late and Flint was taken onto the blimp.  Fonz angrily threw Rex off.

“What is your problem?” he shouted.  “Did you want your friend to get captured?”

“No, but he wanted to,” said Rex sadly.

“What are you talking about?” asked Fonz confused.

“He gave me this when I tried to reach him,” Rex explained, showing him the Chimera Fang. “They were apparently after this as well so he slipped it to me when he got the chance.”

“And you knew what he wanted to do from that?” asked Fonz.

“It confirmed my suspicions, but it was the way they easily captured him,” informed Rex. “Flint is too tough to be defeated so easily.  Sorry, that I got in your way, but Flint must figure this is the best way to save Dan and I trust him.”

“That is pretty cool how close you to are to know what the other’s thinking,” said Fonz impressed, before having a more serious tone.  “But next time, don’t mess with the hair.”
