I figure that I can use the bonus strip this week—allowing me to use the 4th to work on some buffer—to show you some sketches on what’s coming up. Most of the items here are explained on the graphic, but there’s one I wanted to further explain.
Amber’s immediate family were upper middle class, so they have enough money for some of Amber’s needs and wants. Emphasis on ‘some,’ because even as a child, Amber’s not above running a lemonade stand to pay for an item that she even shops around for deals for. She does that because she doesn’t want to be seen as ‘spoiled.’
But regardless, her parents really treated Amber like a princess. And it’s not because of all the Princess movies they collected for her. (And Disney Princesses are hardly stereotypical or objectified; it’s been argued before by many people including myself.)
Hence Amber finds herself in a Princess setting in her dreams, complete with gowns, castles, crowns, the whole nine yards. As Amber grew up, however, so did her dream self, and Princess Amber becomes a more active and powerful Princess. Her kingdom was made from the ground up with her own hands. Her tiara has to share space with a pencil behind her ear. Her scepter is a paint brush a la Epic Mickey, and kidnappers beware, she’s packing heat under that skirt. Here’s a princess who rescues princes just for the lulz.
That’s what you get when a girl adds Sucker Punch to her collection of Disney Princess Movies in that Hard Drive connected to her DVR.
This side of her will show up in more than just Amber’s dreams…and the occasional “Inner Amber” that bitches at things Naturo-style. (The only thing I’ll borrow from that title.) Go on Pandora and create a Blackmore’s Night station, and you’ll have the collection in Amber’s MP3 player. And wait til you hear about Amber’s childhood on-strip.
Also unmentioned yet is the possibility for Amber’s parents to be renaissance faire buffs. Even to the point of dressing up for the events. I don’t know if this will get play on the main strip, but it’ll be an excuse to dress Johnny up in Disney-MangaFan’s lovely Jester Motley.
