while i can't seem to draw to well on a computer i've worked out a system where i draw onto paper, scan it, trace it in gimp then work from there, however it would seem i need to upscale my drawings ^.=.^;

well i'm still trying to work on the shading, wouldn't mind a few pointers :)

Using the gaussian blur tool works awesomely. You could color what you'd like to be shadowed black on a new layer then use the gaussian blur tool to blend it and then lower the layers opacity to the correct amount of shadow you want. Also, if any shadows leak out of the lines and you have a solid line art, you could just select the background areas with the fuzzy/marching ants/magic wand tool and either erase or press the delete key, that should rid of the leaked shadows. The same technique works for lighting too :3
