Upon a late-night summer breeze, green leaves danced and jiggled slowly as the sun slowly but surely disappeared behind the horizon, leaving only a faint yellow glow behind, as dark clouds began to appear from the southwest. Inside a Mock-Georgian brick house, a lone incandescent lightbulb spilled a warm glow inside a blue-colored room and onto a beige carpeted floor. A nine-year old fox named Friendly and a five-year old raccoon named Timothy were getting ready for bed. The cubs had already brushed their teeth, and Friendly was already wearing his red and blue-striped patchwork pyjama bottoms. Timothy was still wearing his blue t-shirt and orange flame shorts. The raccoon stood by the window and waited for the fox to help him prepare for bed. Friendly helped Timothy pull his blue t-shirt off and untied the thick, blue laces of the raccoon's shorts. Timothy blushed as Friendly gently pulled the orange flame shorts down - revealing Timothy's racecar pull-ups, which the raccoon wore to bed because he often wet in his sleep.
"There you go, all ready for bed now." said Friendly, rubbing Timothy's headfur and standing up again.
"Thanks Friendly." squeaked Timothy, as he made his way over to the bed, his pull-ups crinkling a little.
"Alright, I'm turning the light out now. Do you want me to plug my night-light in again?" asked the fox.
"Uh-huh." nodded Timothy, as he snuggled up in Friendly's bed and looked over at him.
Friendly turned off the light and plugged in his old night-light, before getting into bed with the slightly-chubby raccoon.
"Thank you Friendly." said the little raccoon, snuggling up to his fox friend and trilling contently in his raccoon way.
"Goodnight Timothy." smiled Friendly, giving his friend a little hug and a gentle nuzzle.
"Goodnight." squeaked Timothy, still trilling contently and snuggling deeper into the covers, laying on his tummy and facing his older fox friend.
Soon, Friendly was asleep alongside his friend too, laying on his side with his left paw resting on the seat of Timothy's pull-ups and his right paw tucked under the pillow, his tummy resting on the right side of Timothy's slightly chubby body.
Suddenly, Friendly was awoken by a large white flash, a very loud bang and a startled squeak from Timothy.
"Eeeek!" cried the raccoon, tears welling up in his amber eyes as he realized what was going on.
"Wha..." yapped Friendly, pulling the duvet aside and standing beside his window. Heavy rain pelted against the window-pane, the raindrops bouncing off the white panel and the wind howling as yet another flash lit up the pitch-black sky overhead, followed by another bang.
"Eeeeek!" cried Timothy, shuddering visibly and clutching onto the duvet, burying his head in Friendly's pillow.
"It's just a thunder-storm, Timothy." chuckled Friendly, deserting his post at the window and getting back into his bed with the timid raccoon cub.
"I... I... I'm frightened of thunder, Friendly!" squeaked Timothy, burying his head in the fox's pillow again as he anticipated another flash to light up the sky and a loud bang to follow it.
Friendly put his arm around Timothy's slightly chubby body and squeezed his paw in between the mattress and Timothy's chest, putting his paw over the raccoon's heart. Timothy's heart was pounding heavily. Curiously the fox let his other paw wander to the seat of Timothy's pull-ups. He found the raccoon's training pants were soaked and squishy.
"Awwww, it's okay Timothy. Come here" said Friendly, turning over onto his back and gently snuggling up to the raccoon and letting his friend cry into his furry chest. Just then, another flash lit up the bedroom and was followed by a dull clap of thunder.
"Eeek!" squeaked Timothy, burying his head deeper into Friendly's fur and sobbing uncontrollably.
"Shhhhh" comforted the fox, rubbing his raccoon friend's furry back and giving him a kiss on his cheek. "I'll keep you safe, it's okay Timothy."
As the raccoon continued sobbing, Friendly remembered what had made Timothy trill contently a few days ago. Friendly squeezed his right paw underneath Timothy's body and wrapped it around his friend, resting his paw on the squishy seat of Timothy's pull-ups and rubbing them in a circular motion to comfort his friend, and putting his left paw across Timothy's back.
Soon, Timothy was trilling contently and Friendly put his left paw against his friend's heart again, which had resumed a more normal pace.
"There, it's okay Timothy" said Friendly, continuing to rub the seat of Timothy's pull-ups.
"Do you want me to change your training pants, Timothy?" asked the fox, soothingly.
Timothy looked up at his friend with pleading eyes and a quivering lip. He uttered another little squeak through his nose as another dull flash of lightning partly illuminated the room.
"It's okay, the storm's moving away now" said Friendly, "Come on, let's get you in a dry pair of pull-ups"
"Th... thank you Friendly" said Timothy, holding Friendly's paw and gingerly getting out of bed.
Friendly glanced at the bedside clock on his table - which said 02:34. He flicked on the light-switch and walked over to his five-year old raccoon friend, smiling at him as he raccoon stood almost perfectly still, looking down at his soaked training pants.
"It's okay buddy, let's get you out of those" said Friendly, pulling the wet pull-up off and throwing it into his garbage bin before helping his friend into a fresh pair of training pants, pulling them up nice and snugly and then helping Timothy into his orange flame shorts, knowing the raccoon sometimes liked to sleep in them. As he tied the laces, Friendly smiled up at his friend.
"Thanks Friendly." smiled Timothy, giving the fox a big hug.
Friendly smiled and lifted his friend off the ground, patting the seat of Timothy's shorts and listening to the dull crinkling Timothy's pull-ups made, walking over to the bed again.
"At least your pull-up didn't leak this time" said the fox, breathing a small sigh of relief as he put Timothy down and walked over to turn the light off again.
Timothy snuggled up into the covers and smiled as his nine-year old fox friend joined him.
"Poor Timothy." Friendly thought, putting his paw on the seat of Timothy's shorts and finding the velcro-seal on his pocket. He pried it open and put his paw inside, wiggling it around.
"Heeheeheeeheeeheeeee! That tickles!" giggled Timothy, as Friendly wiggled his paw around inside the silky pocket on the seat of his shorts. "Heeheeheeeheee!!!"
Friendly grinned and closed the velcro pocket, rubbing the seat of Timothy's shorts and giving him a nuzzle.
"Goodnight Timothy." said Friendly, kissing the raccoon's cheek and holding his paw.
"Thank you Friendly, you're the bestest friend ever." whispered Timothy, trilling contently and snuggling up with his fox friend again.
