From what I understood, King Mateo had a choice: to become Shomari's vassal or die and his subjects would be the subjects of the invader anyway. It basically means the same, except that in the latter case, the repression will be greater. So I wonder if he doesn't believe too strongly that his death will motivate fennecs to resist harder. All in all it is an honorable behavior, but it will make more beings suffer. His subjects, his family. I suppose his wife' ll get a nasty fate :')
