I'm selectively redrawing certain 'Pre-Pencil' ACO subjects. By 'Pre-Pencil', I mean cards drawn before I began featuring pencils with.
Reason is because I'm wanting to revive some old subjects---return them to the public eye and (well) ...just have some better cards for myself.

Anyway, the subject is 'The Fox' from some of the 'Fox Kids' bumpers of the early-mid 1990s.
The last time I drew 'The Fox' (who I've nicknamed 'Bumper') was in 2017, so here he is again (I guess).

Pencil...

The featured pencil is what some r/pencil Reddit users refer to as a 'penny pencil'.

This 'Finch' specimen is from Wallace Pencil Co (yeah, another 'bird' pencil---why do so  many pencils have bird names?).
Wallace Pencil Co. was founded around 1915, or about the same time 'penny pencils' were in common manufacture. It follows this 'Finch' may well be among Wallace Pencil Co's first offerings. :3

Why are these called 'penny pencils'? Well, the idea is these pencils were made for school children whose parents were on a budget (as well as for school teachers who may've needed to buy their own supplies).
These pencils could be made cheaper than usual because they were *unpainted, lacked ferrules, and were blind stamped.

*this one seems to've been polished ...perhaps it was a 'deluxe' penny pencil?

Even without a ferrule, these pencils were not without erasers. However, the eraser was embedded in the wood same as the graphite---you had to 'sharpen' the eraser in order to get to it.

The most common 'penny pencils' are the Eagle 140, and the 'Dash by Eberhard Faber. Wallace models don't seem to appear very often, so this is a nice one to have.

I drew this ACO beginning to end via a vintage 'Cabinet' pencil from Dixon.

Now, I may or may not delete my original 'Bumper' ACO. But, in case I do, I have pasted most of its 2017 description below. Enjoy!

====================

I was raised on Disney and Nickelodeon, but I would sometimes watch Fox for some shows, most notably 'Taz-Mania', 'Animaniacs' and (if I recall) 'Batman: the Animated Series'.

Oddly, my memory of Fox Network is obscured by something--I have few real memories of it. When I did my recent review of an episode of Taz-Mania, I wondered on what channel I used to watch the show. I knew it wasn't Disney or Nick--I thought 'Cartoon Network', but something seemed off about that.
It wasn't until I went prowling around YouTube for ideas that I happened upon a collection of 'Fox Kids' bumpers that jogged my memory!

Old furs may recognize this character--he's one of the 90's 'Fox Kids' mascots, whose job it was to segue the viewer from program to ads, from ads to program.

The Fox's usual lines were "We'll be right back" and "Now back to our show". Uninspired, sure, but they got the job done!
I don't think the fox had a name. He had one extended skit, in which we see he works for Fox Network, but not as a celebrity (as he imagines himself to be), but as a humble sandwich-getter (not too glamorous, but it pays the bills). In that skit, he was simply referred to as 'the fox'.

That's kinda sad, hence I've given him a nickname: 'Bumper'".

Any chance you could show the eraser end of the pencil cause I've seen wood ERASER pencils that you had to peel to 'sharpen' the eraser but never one where you actually had to sharpen the WOOD to get to the eraser!

And yes I remember 'Bumper'. He was a fixture for just about every cartoon during that time. :D

Here's a bag: https://sta.sh/02e9epaqtgim

The eraser ends were always pre-sharpened, so the erasers are the points you see here.

Eberhard Faber continued to make a form of 'penny pencil' long after the real things had gone out of general production.
That pencil was the 'Dash', and was kept around for many years. I have one of those 'Dash' pencils, but only God knows where it could be. There was also a 'Dot' that went with it, but I'm unsure what it's gimmick was (I've yet to find one for sale).

Ok I have seen those before but only occasionally. They were handy but the eraser wasn't that good except for small areas of a drawing and maybe one or two words on a document. If I remember right they made them for both pencil and ink but the ink was terrible and usually just tore the paper so it wasn't used much.
Thanks for showing them. :)

Well, these erasers are as stone, so they would destroy paper also. :3
