Months or maybe years ago, I cannot say, a veil of darkness fell over Hyrule, and the kingdom fell to an army of shadows. Loss and misery befell our people, but I did not sorrow, for I was cloaked in the fortitude of my liege, the fair Princess Zelda. As long as she reigned, no blight could strike me from my post. That’s what I though, at least, before the arrival of the Beast.
One twilit evening, a long, echoing howl was heard in every corner of the shrouded palace. At my post at her highness’s door, I saw her open the window and gaze out over the citadel into the great plain, entranced. She remained silent as the howls washed over the castle, the setting sun the only object affected by time until Lady Impa’s firm, bony grip pulled the Princess to bed. The howls stopped soon after.
The next evening was peaceful, and the memory of the strange occurrence almost evaporated into the ether of forgotten dreams as the sun quietly disappeared. However, hours after dark, the tranquility of night was broken by the howling. It was louder this time, waking the entire castle. Perhaps it was even closer. Five soldiers sent out to capture the beast returned the next morning, emptyhanded.
Every night, the howling resumed, and the castle slowly adjusted, getting what sleep we could be surrounded by howling demons and living ghosts. Only one resident remained in stasis, as the Princess came to the window at every call with rapt attention and rigid compulsivity. After days of being hounded by Lady Impa, she ordered all servants to leave her chambers during these episodes. Within a couple of weeks, she had completely secluded herself. Around this time, a second beast’s howl joined the firsts.
For a month, the guards and servants only knew the Princess’s presence from the plates of food returned clean after being slid under the door. I denied any strangeness, and when the strangeness became undeniable, I denied my worthiness to question it. In the end, only Lady Impa had the courage to end this charade. One evening, before a tray of roast chicken and duck could be dragged into the door, she unlocked the door and entered the chamber.
A loud shriek roused me from my dazed torpor, but before I could enter the chamber, the beast burst forth. An enormous black wolf with cursed markings, it gave me a menacing glance before tearing through the halls amid shrieks of terror. I leapt into the room, my eyes darting aimlessly in search of her regal personage. I saw Impa’s wrinkled face contorted in horror. I followed her eyes and felt a twinge of fear when a mess of fur brushed past me into the hall. My brothers-in-arms and I gave chase to these monsters, but to no avail. We searched for the Princess and the mysterious beasts for months but neither have been seen since.
Shortly afterwards, a hero of providence rose out of the country to beat back the darkness. As the kingdom rejoiced, I slunk from the castle town in shame, having resigned my post. I traveled to the hero’s village to seek his assistance, but the hero had already left on another quest. As the mayor comforted me with hospitality and drink, I managed to stave off my darkest thoughts by watching the children play with a big friendly dog with brown fur and silvery blue eyes.
