Frustratingly inevitable. Christians are far from perfect, just orders of magnitude closer than any other belief system. It's not a case of not knowing what's wrong, but of choosing to do something wrong because it's easy and then justifying it afterward.
If there's any silver lining, it's that these Christian vs Christian wars must inevitably have wound up sending many saints to heaven (the longstanding feud between France and England, for example, gave rise to several of my personal heroes on both sides). The downside being they weren't putting that energy towards philosophy, technological and scientific advancement, or keeping the scourge of Islam at bay.
