Wow! Interesting that in my story "Marooned on Tashoo" my protagonist, William Henry Watson, did want something right away just as Kurt Vonnegut said that he used to tell his students to do with their protagonist. In William's case, he wanted to hold the record for the highest flight by a civilian. I did this long before I even read this quote.

After reaching 60 km in altitude he noticed how insignificant everyone on the Earth actually is and saw the infinity of space and his new goal was to go into space. 6 years later, he achieved this goal when, after graduating from the Interstellar Terran Naval Academy, he was commissioned an Ensign in the Interstellar Terran Navy as a fighter pilot. The first 4 chapters of the story are only the lead-in to the main story of him being marooned on a world 25 light years away. This world is called Tashoo (Earth in their language); hence, the title "Marooned on Tashoo".
