"Brings back memories, eh pup?" Wolf asked, turning his head to face his husband as they stood in the crowd.
Fox only caught part of Wolf's comment due to the applause the crowd was giving the new cadets as they walked up on stage to be pinned. "Hm? Yeah, it does." he replied with a warm smile.
"Sylvia Lombardi..." the general called into the microphone. A pink and white falcon ascended the steps of the stage to be pinned. Fox turned to his left and waved to her mother, Katt.
"She looks just like her dad, huh? Got that same cocky attitude too hehe..." Fox said to Wolf.
"Sylvia's a handful, don't know what he sees in her. Thrill of the chase maybe?" Wolf responded.
"Oh! Wolf, here he comes!" Fox said putting one hand on his husband's shoulder and using the other to point over at a tall blue wolf ascending the steps of the stage.
Wolf simply pecked his husband on the cheek in response and then smiled and wrapped his arm around Fox as their son's name was called.
Shoulders back and with a confident stride, the wolf walked across the stage and was pinned with his wings by Falco, head of the academy.
"You've got a bright future in the sky, kid. I expect to see great things from you." Falco said as he pinned the wolf.
"I won't let you down sir! I'll be the greatest pilot in the Lylat system! Just wait!" the rookie replied as he shook the falcon's hand.
After the ceremony's conclusion, Corneria Flight Academy's latest batch of graduates met with their families in front of the stage.
"Dad!" the blue wolf said, running up to Fox.
"Jimmy! I'm so proud of you!" the fox replied as he pulled his son into a hug.
"Thanks dad." Jimmy said as he patted his Dad's back before breaking the hug.
"You've done well, kiddo." Wolf said as he put a hand on his son's shoulder. "Here, I got you a graduation gift..." he continued, reaching into his pocket and pulling out what looked to be a purple cloth. "My mother, your grandmother, gave me this bandana the last time I saw her, right before I left for the Academy. I want you to have it." Wolf said as he tied it around Jimmy's neck.
"Pop... thank you..." the blue wolf said, hugging his father. Wolf wasn't big on hugs but he briefly put an arm around his son's back, patting it.
"So you ready to join Star Fox? Officially, I mean?" Fox asked.
"Actually... I was thinking of starting my own team." Jimmy replied, folding his arms.
"What?" Fox asked, genuinely shocked. "All you could talk about all these years is how much you wanted to join us. Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I already got an idea of who I want to join me too..." Jimmy said, as he turned to face Sylvia in the distant crowd, giving her a wink. She gave him a warm smile in return. "I just... I don't want to just be the son of Fox McCloud and Wolf O'Donnell, you know? You two are the greatest pilots in the system, you're legends! I want to carve out my own legacy."
"I think that's great, Jimmy." Wolf replied, a look of pride on his face. "You were the top student this year, I know you'll be able to make a name for yourself."
"So what are you two gonna do with out me? You'll have an empty nest!" Jimmy said with a snicker.
"It won't be the same without you Jimmy. But your Pop and I will manage..." Fox said, putting an arm around Wolf.
"Maybe we'll take up ballet..." Wolf said with a snicker and grin.
"Wolf O'Donnell doing ballet? That I'd pay to see, haha!" Fox said, giving his husband a playful nudge in the arm with his fist.
"Ah, you guys will be fine." Jimmy said, chuckling along with Fox. "Hey listen, Sylvia and I were gonna head to Fortuna for some training. Is it okay if I split?"
"Fortuna?" Wolf asked, looking at Fox, who looked back at him and gave him a wink.
"Yeah, why?" Jimmy asked, tilting his head.
"Nothing, go on. Go get her kid." Wolf said giving his son a thumbs up. Jimmy replied in kind.
"Call us on comms when you get there, alright?" Fox said as Jimmy walked away towards Sylvia.
"Will do!" the blue wolf shouted back as he went over to the pink falcon.
"There he goes Wolf. We did that. Us. Together. We made this happen." Fox said, as he held his husband's hand and waved to their son with the other.
"Yeah. Finally, I do something right. I was such a bastard all those years ago. But you saved me Fox. I love you. I can't imagine where I would be right now if we hadn't shot each other down on Fortuna. You think-" Wolf was interrupted by Fox placing his hand behind his head and pulling him in for a deep kiss. In that moment, nothing but the two of them existed. Just two mates embracing each other, completing each other.
Fox broke the kiss. Saying anything more would have spoiled the moment so they simply walked back to Wolf's Wolfen in silence, holding hands, with Fox's head leaning on his husband's shoulder. Wolf climbed into the pilot's seat and offered and hand to help Fox up into the canopy to sit in his lap. Closing the canopy, the Wolfen lifted off the ground and ascended into the sky. Wolf rested his head atop his mate's and Fox closed his eyes as he once again drifted off to the sound of Wolf's heartbeat.
And that's a wrap! This is the last offical part of my Wolf and Fox story.
I didn't want to write a story for the epilogue, I would rather end it here. I did leave the door open for a prequel story on Fortuna. I kinda wanted to take on a writing challenge of explaining how Wolf and Fox went from rivals to lovers. I don't know when I'll get around to doing it though.
So for now, this is it. I'm taking a break from this couple for a while. This whole project was just something I wanted to do to show my love for these two.
I thank all of you for reading and liking the art by the talented people who contributed to this series.
