After spending all morning experimenting, finally found a way to incorporate 3D rendered scenes as overworld maps from a top down view AND use them as battle scenes as well. Had to think outside the box of sorts, but am happy how this turned out. Running the game in HD, 3D assets really look better than stock 2D.
