Chapter One – A Empty Heart

St Libory was not a very large and busy city, with local commerce being very small. Therefore, it was common that customers did not appear for several hours in the small clothing store maintained by Rose Bear, Idealist Fennec, Joyful Heart Bear, Detailed Heart Bear and Mother Cat on the main street of the village. Fortunately, the five friends and associates had several wholesale clients in the nearby towns, not just depending on the local movement to survive, and since the five were good seamstresses and liked to work with the public, they usually took turns between staying at the store counter and small backstage.
That morning Mother and Idealist had taken over the role of sales clerks, and after two or three sales in the last hours, the female fennec decided to check stock and clothing labels in showcase. During that assignment, as she scribbled numbers and redistributing the dresses, she noticed that the yellow female cat remained with her chin resting on her hands and elbows resting on the counter, looking lost in thought and expression sad and questioned.
At first, the desert fox did not want to say anything, but as time passed and her friend's expression and attitude did not change, her curiosity grew to the point where she stopped her task and, pulling a stool, sat down next to the cat, which did not even blink in concentration.
- Earth calling Mother Cat, hello! - said Idealist playfully, running a hand over her friend's eyes to test her reflexes - Are you all right?
Mother seemed to awaken from a stupor, and after blinking a few times, looked at the female fennec and began to laugh softly, a little embarrassed.
- I'm sorry, Idealist, I think I have a head on the moon - the female cat replied amicably - What do you want?
- Knowing if it's okay with you - said the fennec calmly - Since we first saw each other this morning, you must have said a maximum of 10 words... Has anything happened between you and Cosmo or Peaceful or Internum?
- No, it’s okay, it's just... I have not slept well a few nights. I've been having strange dreams and it makes me sleepy.
- What kind of dreams? Very bad?
- Well... I do not know, they're strange - thought the cat - I dream that I'm in a very dark place, and every time I see a ray of light and walk there, I found a starlet. And after having picked up several stars, I see one more in the distance, and then she becomes... In my daughter Proud... And when we are about to hug, I wake up. I had these dreams every night this last week, more and more intense, and... I don' know what that means.
- It means that you still have hopes of finding your daughter, and that is reflecting in your dreams - said the fennec with a small smile.
- Maybe that's right, since I never really gave up hope of meeting Proud again, especially after Joyful and Looter arrived in St Libory and said she's alive... But I had never had dreams so real and repeated so many times.
- At least you're lucky, you know your daughter is alive and you can find her one day... - the female fennec murmured in a sad tone - As for me... I can only live on memories...
And with a deep sigh, she lowered her head and felt tears begin to form in her eyes. All the bears and cousins of St Libory knew how much Idealist still suffered for the death of her daughter Confidence. As long as the years had passed, this was a pain the desert fox could not get out of the heart even though she had all the support of her husband Tricks Black Fox and the adopted daughter Peachy Foxcat. She had a strong sense of guilt for not having thrown herself into the violent waters of the river at San Martin, where the dreamy fennec lived as a young man, and tried to rescue the little fennec which drowning.
Mother followed her friend's suffering since that day, and both she and the others felt sad that they could not do anything to alleviate the lingering pain in her heart. The yellow cat slowly laid her hand on Idealist's shoulder, and smiled amiably.
- You don't know if Confidence really did die that day - she said hopefully - Remember that Internum and Bold also fell into the water, and they're here with us now. Maybe your daughter survived too, and one day you two will meet again and be the happiest people in the world.
- Tricks and Peachy always tell me this - sighed the female fox - But it's hard to hope for after so many years...
- Who will find who? - Rose asked with a curious smile, approaching the two friends along with Joyful - Are you talking about your daughters?
- Yes, I was telling Idealist about some strange dreams I'm having - Mother explained calmly - I dream I'm gathering stars in the sky, and then I see Proud approaching me with open arms, but I always wake up before to embrace her.
- It's a very beautiful dream - Joyful said, sitting down beside the female cat - I hope it comes true... For the four of us.
- This is my greatest wish, to be able to find my son Champ again, and see you find your children again - Rose said hopefully as her eyes filled with tears - The day I find Champ again, I'll embrace him so much, and I will cry so much to feel him again in my arms... And you, what will you do when you meet your children again?
- I'm also going to hug Hugs and Tugs, and I'll never part with them again, nor Mama - said the mother of the twins, feeling her heart beat hard - I'll be the best mother in the world, and I'll do anything to make up for the years of absence.
- I think I would die of joy - murmured Idealist, her head bowed - But that is an impossible dream...
- Honestly, I do not know what I'll do when I meet up with Proud - the yellow cat confessed thoughtfully - I just wish she understood what happened that day in San Martin, and I never gave up on finding her.
- We all wish for that - agreed the dark pink bear - I also wish Champ, Hugs, Tugs, Bright Heart, Braveheart, and even Confidence understand that we do not give up on them.
- I bet they'll understand - Joyful said happily - Although no one speaks of this in the Kingdom of Caring, I know that everyone there has the secret desire to discover the origins and rediscover the parents or siblings.
- By the way, Joyful, in the years you've lived in the Kingdom of Caring was there a baby bear with light beige fur and a gold three-pointed star in his belly who loved to play with tickles? - the female cat asked after a short silence.
- No, there was no one with that description unless some other cub was born after Looter and me lost contact with Care Bear Family. But why do you want to know that? And what has there to be this ticklish story?
- Well... It's just that I've been dreaming about this cub every now and then. And on all occasions, he's tied up and I'm tickling him, without stopping, while he laughs and says "c'mon, Mom, do not stop tickling me." And then I tickle him even more, and he laughs and keeps calling me Mom, and I call him son...
- That's a strange dream - Rose said with a giggle - You do not look like a person who likes to tickle others like that. And I've never met anyone who likes to be tickled that way.
- Should we be worried you're sleepwalking and start tickling us at night? - asked Idealist provocatively - Or is this just some hidden fetish?
- Do not worry, I do not mean to tickle any of my friends - Mother laughed - I just think it's strange to dream about it several times.
At that moment, the four of them heard the door of the shop open, and they saw Internum Raccoon quickly enter the establishment with a small friendly smile. She had light moss-green furs and dark green stripes, and her intelligent expression was further emphasized by her glasses. As with Idealist's daughter, the raccoon had disappeared into the furious waters of a river when the bears and cousins were evacuating their former dwelling on the island of San Martin after being attacked by a traitor of the species aided by an evil creature called Dark Heart. However, years later, Mother Cat and Hunter Bear, who was the founder of that community of bears and cousins in St Libory, found the young woman in an orphanage, and after some legal proceedings, the cat was able to legally adopt Internum and remove her from that place.
Internum never hid how grateful she was to Mother for doing so, for though she did not remember how she had gone to that orphanage, she knew very well how much she had suffered at the hands of the other human children, who thought her an aberration. Several times she had been pushed to the floor, her books and toys broken, and some girls loved to tickle and squeeze her saying that the raccoon was a stuffed animal. To leave that place and to live with a loving family that allowed her to know his past and to hope for the future was the best thing that had happened in her life. That's why the raccoon always considered the yellow cat literally as her second mother.
- Hi Mom, hello girls - she said cheerfully, looking at the four - Can I ask you to lend me Mom for a few minutes? Dad Cosmo wants to talk to her and her family.
- Is Cosmo home yet? - asked the cat with surprised air - I thought today was an astronomical night of observation, and he'd stay in the service until later.
- Well, maybe that's why he's home so early - Rose said with a giggle - Go with your daughter, we'll take care of the store.
Joyful and Idealist nodded, and Mother quickly followed Internum. The young scholar seemed strangely quiet and anxious, which made the cat start to get a little worried.
- Are you all right, daughter? - she finally questioned as the two walked side by side on the sidewalk - You seem to be trying to hide something from me... Tell me the truth; something happened to Cosmo or Peaceful?
- No, no, it's okay, it's... - the raccoon smiled shyly as her cheeks flushed - Well, Daddy might explain to you better what's going on, but I can tell you it's a good thing.
- You mean you know what it's about?
- Well, yes... But he made me promise that I would not say anything to you, Mom, until he could break the news.
Soon they were both at home, and as they entered through the door, they saw Cosmo and Peaceful gathered in the living room, waiting for the cat and the raccoon. As soon as the white tiger saw Mother, she ran with open arms and gave a strong hug to the foster mother.
- Mom! - she shouted cheerfully - I was already missing you!
- I was missing you, too, daughter - said the yellow cat, purring lovely, before smiling and giving her a kiss on the cheek - So, what is your father doing?
- I don't know, he did not tell me yet, just for Internum - and saying that she also gave a strong hug to the foster sister - Now that Mom's here, you're going to tell me what's Dad's secret too? Please!
Mother looked at her husband with a smirk, and he just lowered his head, his cheeks flushed, smiling at his wife timidly.
- Something tells me that you and Internum are preparing some surprise - the female cat said with a wink, giving a kiss to the white tiger's cheek - So what's the big secret you two are hiding?"
- A surprise that you and Peaceful will surely love - he answered quietly - Remember that I talked to you some time ago about an astronomy course in Seattle?
- Yes, you seemed quite interested in that.
- Then maybe you'll be glad to know that I've been approved to take this course - Cosmo said, not containing the glint of happiness in his eyes - And because I've never been absent from the St Louis Observatory, and I've always been very engaged in researching in my ten years of work, I got a one year license award with all expenses paid, and they will pay for the course material for my course!
- Wow! Congratulations Dad! - Peaceful said giving the tiger a hug.
- I congratulate you, too, dear - Mother said, kissing her husband's lips - You've always been a applied tiger, and you deserve all this. When does the course begin?
- In a little more than a month, but we'll leave in the day after tomorrow for our boat trip to be very quiet and special.
- Boat trip? What do you mean by that?
- It means that the four of us are going to have a beautiful family trip on board "Dawnstar" from St Louis to Seattle, bordering the American coast and across the Panama Canal - Cosmo explained with a wink - The trip lasts about 25 days, then we need to hurry to leave.
- A trip? On the sailboat? That Cool!!! - Peaceful shouted happily, jumping with joy and running to embrace her father - That will be a real adventure!
"Dawnstar" was the name of a sailboat 50 feet that had been acquired by bears and St. Libory cousins, communal way, to be used by them in a hypothetical return trip to San Martin. This did not occur, and the boat remained anchored in St. Louis several years ago, although bears and cousins sometimes used it for short trips across the Mississippi. The previous name of the boat was "Sweet Memory," but it was the white tiger who suggested the change to the current name, both to indicate a star guide of hope, but also to honor his late circus mate, biological mother of Peaceful.
This would be the first great voyage of the sailboat, and the first time Cosmo was proposing to command the ship alone, since Hunter was the captain on the other occasions when he sailed. It was natural that the yellow cat was a little worried about her husband's idea, not sharing the little tigress's enthusiasm.
- But honey, you can't sail right! - Mother protested quickly - Besides, we can't leave in a hurry like this. We have to talk to our friends to borrow the boat!
- I already talked to Hunter, Hunter, Caretaker, Worker and Tricks about using the sailboat, and they agreed - the astronomer cat replied - Also, your brother gave me some private lessons on navigation, and I read some manuals that Books Heart lent. And you also have some knowledge about navigation, and you can help me in case of an emergency.
- But I can't leave the store! And Internum can’t just quit her job to sail! Not to mention that Peaceful can’t miss private lessons with Sofia, or else she will miss the school year!
- There's no problem with that, I can teach Peaceful's lessons as we sail - said the raccoon with a giggle - Sofia has already given me all the material and all the instructions I need to get on with my little sister's studies. And as Dad told me earlier about his plans, I also got a six-month leave on my job at the municipal library...
- And I've already talked to Rose, Joyful Idealist about the journey - Cosmo went on, holding onto his wife's hands - They have not raised any objections, and even agree that this tour will be good for you, especially after all those strange dreams you're having.
- C'mon, Mom! This will be fun! - the white tiger asked with bright eyes - We never took a boat together before!
- And it will be the first big trip that the four of us will do alone - said the raccoon, putting his hand on the cat's shoulder - Please, Mom, let's enjoy this moment together. It's been so long since we've been out...
Mother realized she could not escape that trip. She rolled her eyes and took a deep breath before she smiled a little.
- Looks like you guys really set everything up, and I can't refuse - she said with a friendly giggle - All right, we're going to travel and sail.
- Cool!!! - Peaceful shouted, hugging her mother.
- I promise you, my dear, that this will be an unforgettable journey - said the white tiger with a broad smile - I have already calculated our route, we will go down Mississippi to New Orleans, from where we will go straight to Cancun, Mexico, and then to Providencia Island, until arriving at Colon, to cross the Panama Canal. Then we'll enter the Pacific Ocean and up the coast to Seattle.
- My knowledge of geography is a bit rusty, but this is a long trip. Will we be on time?
- Yes, I calculated the necessary time - said Internum, taking a sheet of paper out of her pocket and scribbling a few numbers - The route is about 11,000 kilometers. If we maintain an average of 25 kilometers per hour, it will take 20-30 days to complete the trip.
- And since there's no hurry on the way back, we'll be able to go more quietly along the coast and get to know the cities of Central America - Cosmo said calmly - Hunter and I already checked which places accept American passports without a visa and I have already filled out all the documentation for the trip to the port authority. Our friends have already contributed with some money and groceries. Even hotel rooms in Seattle are already booked...
- Then I would not even have to refuse, you had already prepared everything and would be able you kidnapped me so I could come along - the yellow cat teased, patting Peaceful's head, holding Internum's hand and giving a kiss in Cosmo - Okay, if we're going to leave in two days for such a long trip, we need to start packing. Who will help me?
- Me! Me! - shouted father and daughters cheerfully, and the four of them walked embraced toward the bedrooms to begin packing their luggage.
*****
She was alone on the deck of the sailboat, and there was only a dark sea that seemed to have no end. She held the steering wheel firmly in one direction, determined to move forward toward the bright stars that adorned the sky, jumping happily and waving for the cat to follow.
Mother was not afraid, but joy in the heart. Even when the winds changed direction to keep "Dawnstar" out of the way, or when the lull made the boat do not want to move forward, she kept a firm grip on the rudder, following the points of light. It was when the indistinct form of a beach began to appear before the sailboat, and the stars were now in the sand, joking. A great star began to shine in the sky and illuminate everything around, while the female cat moored the sailboat near the beach and jumped in the water.
Suddenly they were no longer stars, but 18 cubs were playing in the sand, happily, running from one place to another, making sandcastles or climbing the heaps of land. Among them, Mother recognized Peaceful and Internum, and beside the two was whom she loved so much and wanted to recover. There was her daughter Proud, in her white cap and blue jacket, running merrily until she stopped and saw the yellow cat approaching in the sand.
- Look; Mommy arrived! Mommy arrived! - the kitten screamed happily, opening her arms and running towards Mother, followed by the other 17 cubs who also called her "Mommy"...
The female cat ran toward those baby bears and baby cousins, crying with joy, when a familiar voice reached her ears half-dreamed.
- "Mother... Mother... Wake up; it's time to go...”
It was as if a black hole appeared at the foot of the yellow cat, and suddenly she felt herself drained away from the cubs in free fall until finally she opened her eyes and took a deep breath, waking up in her room and seeing Cosmo beside her looking worried, still with his hand on her shoulder after waking her up.
- Is everything all right, my dear? - he asked, looking closely at his wife - You look scared, are you having some nightmare?
- No, just one more dream... - she murmured in response, with a deep sad sigh - And again I could not embrace Proud...
The white tiger sadly lowered his head.
- I'm sorry, I think I interrupted your dream this time - he said in an embarrassed tone - But it's almost time for us to leave. Hunter has arrived with the van and is packing the bags.
- All right, you did not know what I was dreaming about - Mother said with a small smile, kissing her husband - I'm going to take a shower before breakfast, and then we can go on the trip.
Cosmo agreed with a smile, and left the room as the yellow cat got up from the bed and went to take a morning shower. But her heart was still stuck in that dream, and in all the other dreams she had been having in the last days with her daughter Proud. What did all this mean? And what would all those cubs be, along with the kitten, with Peaceful and Internum, in the last dream? These were questions she could not answer, and that left her heart filled with doubts.
After wiping herself out of the bathroom, Mother had a well-reinforced breakfast in the company of the little tigress and her husband, since Internum had gotten up earlier for finish packing. Then the four helped Hunter and the Caretaker finished loading the bags in the van, and then at last the four travelers began to bid farewell to their friends who would not go to the St Louis quay. So the cat quickly walked to Idealist, Rose and Joyful.
- Have a good trip and have a good time, my friend - said the fennec, hugging the yellow cat - And send us news from time to time.
- Take care of the shop while I'm gone - Mother replied politely, before looking at the two pink bears - And you both take good care of our friend while I'm gone.
- You do not have to ask for that - Joyful said with a giggle - Have a good trip, Mother.
- Take some rest and have a good time - Rose added as she said goodbye to her friend - And do not worry about the store or anything else, we'll take care of everything.
Meanwhile, Sofia said goodbye to Peaceful and Internum.
- Thank you for accepting to be Peaceful's surrogate teacher during the trip - said the teacher bear - It is very important that she does not have a break in school, especially because she is home-schooled.
- I know that, and I'll do my best to continue giving the lessons to my little sister - Internum smiled and hugged her friend - See you soon.
- And as for you, young lady - Sofia turned to the little tigress and knelt down to give her a hug - Do not forget to do your lessons, because I'll check all your notebooks when you return from the trip.
- Do not worry Auntie Sofia, Internum is also a great teacher - replied the little tigress cheerfully - I'm going to miss you and Auntie Intellectual too...
- Soon you'll be back. Now enjoy to play a lot on the trip.
Books and Forget Bear said goodbye to Cosmo, who laughed at the attempts of the female bear to not forget about why friends were going to travel.
- Do you understand now, Mama? - repeated the young blue bear with a funny sigh - They will travel because Cosmo has an astronomy course.
- Yes, I think I understood... - said the female bear, scratching her head - Well, I'll forget about it again in five minutes, but I wish you and Mother and your daughters have a good trip.
- Thank you, Forget - said the astronomer, squeezing her friend's hand lightly before turning to the literary bear - See you later, my friend.
- See you later, Cosmo, and have a good trip - the young bear replied timidly.
The white tiger hugged Books Heart friendly before heading off to say goodbye to Tricks, Worker and Looter. In the meantime, Internum also chatted one last time with Detailed, Diligent, Peachy and Sakura, her best friends, at the same time Mother was saying goodbye to her sister-in-law Architect and to her nephews Engineer Ticat and Lifeguard Ticat. Peaceful gave a hug in the cousin and a kiss on the forehead of the newborn female cousin.
- I'm going to miss you, Mother - said the feline designer with tears in her eyes, embracing her sister-in-law - We've always been together for the last 50 years, in the worst of times...
- I know that, I'll miss you too - agreed the yellow female cat with an emotional sigh - Soon we'll be together again. Take good care of my nephews and my brother.
- And take good care of my heart nieces, and of your husband - concluded Architect before the two separated.
A few minutes later, the four travelers finished bidding farewell to all their friends and relatives, and boarded in the van along with Hunter and Caretaker, who would accompany them to St Louis. The white tiger, the yellow cat, the green raccoon and the smart little tigress looked one last time for Heartomville, and for the friends waving in the middle of the street, when the vehicle won the road.
- I'm really going to miss them all - Internum said with a sad smile - Especially my friends, we've been together ever...
- And we'll miss you as long as you're traveling too - answered Caretaker, looking at his adopted niece - At least we know where you'll be, and we'll have the radio and the phone to communicate.
- Besides, you should not feel sad, but enjoy the ride - Hunter said cheerfully - I'm sure you're going to have a great time and have lots of stories to tell when you get back.
- You're right, Hunter - agreed Cosmo with a smirk - At least I'm very anxious, and this will be my first great trip.
- But you did not travel the world when you lived in the circus, Dad? - Peaceful asked curiously.
- No, just from one town to another... And caged travel is not the funniest way to get to know the world... - the white tiger lowered his head with a sigh - At least we'll both find out together what it's like to travel free world.
- Or at least on the coast of North America - Mother said with a giggle, caressing her daughter's head and kissing her husband's cheek - But it will be a great adventure, and we should make the most of it. And as Caretaker said, we still have radio and phone to communicate with friends.
Everyone smiled excitedly as they continued to talk about their expectations for the trip, so much so that they did not even see the time pass, and in just under half an hour the red and white van was already parked on a private jetty in St Louis where the sailboat "Dawnstar" was anchored.
When they got out of the vehicle, they all saw the great Mississippi River, and they could also see the downtown and Gateway Arch opening the doors of all travelers to the American West. In a way it was what Cosmo, Mother, Peaceful and Internum would do, albeit with a long turn in the ocean.
Another half hour passed before the entire luggage and supplies were put on board the boat, and the last inspections were carried out on the hull, radio, rudder, sails, and engine. At last everything was ready for departure, and Hunter and Caretaker said farewell to friends and relatives.
- I know everyone has said that, but I also wish you a good trip - said the tabby with a small smile, hugging Mother - Be well, my sister.
- Do not worry, Caretaker, I'll stay - she said politely - I'll see you soon.
- Goodbye, Uncle Caretaker - Peaceful said, hugging the cat and giving him a kiss - Tell Lifeguard I'm coming back soon to play house together.
- Yes, I'll tell her, if you promise me you'll be a good little tigress and respect your father, your mother, and your great sister on the trip.
- I promise! - concluded the little tigress with a small smile.
It was Cosmo's turn to come and shake his brother-in-law's hand.
- Thank you for teaching me how to guide the boat - said the white tiger calmly - I promise that everything will be all right, and I'll take care of Mother, Peaceful and Internum.
- I trust you, Cosmo - answered Caretaker with a giggle - You do not have to promise me anything. Have a good trip and a good course. And you too, Internum. Have a good trip.
- Thanks, Uncle Caretaker, see you soon - the female raccoon said as she hugged his foster-uncle before she turned to Hunter - See you soon, Hunter.
The bear hugged the raccoon's hand amiably, not saying a single word, before holding the white little tigress in his arms and kissing her. But finally the tears began to stream from his eyes as Cosmo and Mother approached to say goodbye.
- I'll miss you four... - he said wiping the tears - We live many adventures together... And I feel like I'm part of your family...
- And you're a part of our family, Hunter - said the white tiger, shaking hands with the soldier's bear - If Mother, Internum, Peaceful and I are together today, it's because you helped us one day...
- In this Cosmo is completely right - agreed the yellow cat, embracing the Patriarch of Heartomville - See you soon, my friend.
Quickly the four travelers boarded the sailboat, and Cosmo hoisted the sails as Internum picked up the anchor. Mother and Peaceful went to the steering wheel of the boat, and the female cat started the engine to maneuver the boat, which slowly moved away from the dock. Hunter and Caretaker stood there beckoning, while those on board also waved back, until they became only a dot on the bank.
- Honestly, I wanted Caretaker, Architect and the cubs to come with us on this adventure - the yellow cat commented with a small smile - When we were cubs, we loved to sail with Daddy Stellar and Uncle Nautical...
- And this will be a great adventure, is not it, Mama? - asked the white little tigress happily, looking at her mother, her father, and her older sister.
- Yes, the greatest and most amusing adventure we shall ever have - the astronomer tiger replied cheerfully, stroking the little tigress's head before holding the raccoon and his wife's hands as the boat slowly descended the river toward an adventure greater than any of the four could imagine...
