Well, when your available skillset involves "adult entertainer" and "survivalist" career choices in downtown Trenton are somewhat limited......

Gravymaster!?  Puh-leeze!  LOL.  I could make gravy that'll make you want to slap your grandma and I don't use no prepackaged stuff.  I learned how to make it from my mom and she from her mom.

Yeah.  I've always made a roux and added enough water to it to make it the consistency I needed.  I don't even add salt or pepper to my gravy, it's naturally salty enough to make anybody happy.  LOL.

Like most things in life, it's what you're used to. Particularly when it comes to special occasions, 'best' is whatever you associate with those happy experiences. So, if Grandma used 'Gravymaster', likely that's what you associate with real gravy.
My mother is Swedish, and her taste in food was, well, 'basic'. Still, she made the most remarkable French Fries, the likes of which I have never encountered since. All done in a battered aluminum pan with a frying basket.

That's true.  My family has lived in the deep south since the 1700s so, we've had to learn to do with what we had.  That may be why most of the food we eat isn't prepackaged.

I came from Louisiana, where allegedly every recipe begins "First make a roux...."
