I'm actually not sure whether they are really ghosts myself, but their biology seems to fit the bill, as well as other various pieces of evidence.
In my continuities, they still have a physical form that works much in the same way as that of the living, but with the exception of the need to eat, sleep, drink, or breathe. On top of this, less laws of physics apply, as they can somewhat manipulate their bodies to be either solid or intangible (more so for some species than others).
However, with a lack of rest, food or drink, there does exist nonfatal unhealthiness, as in Gem's case.
I'm actually not sure whether they are really ghosts myself, but their biology seems to fit the bill
