The Care Bears
The Confidence Secret
3rd Part
Chapter 37

*****

James yawned as he stepped out of the elevator, carrying his briefcase in his hand and heading for Frank's office to take over as interim B & H chairman for another day. Although the young businessman was accustomed to a grueling routine, he marveled at the amount of appointments on the old businessman's agenda, and he could not help wondering how the 90-year-old could do all that work and still have the energy to paint pictures, learn other languages, or even take a vacation.
It only made him feel more respect for Frank, beginning to understand why Frank always said "I'm as old as I feel." Fortunately that morning the first meeting was only scheduled for 10:00 a.m., so the vice president expected to relax a bit before reading some monthly reports on the conglomerate's finances, stocks and works.
But it was enough for him to walk into Elizabeth's room to see that the secretary was not alone, and that some people were sitting on the couch.
- Good morning, Mr. James - began the old woman with a troubled expression - These people want to talk to you, but they do not have a scheduled time...
At that moment, one of the waiting boys stood up and walked quickly toward the businessman, shaking his hand enthusiastically.
- Mr. Crevell, it is a pleasure to meet you, my name is Thompson Timberley, and I am a licensed historian and director of a technical school in the north of Scotland - he began before pointing to the others - This is my brother Jacob, my sister Anna and our field assistant Norman Chatplan. And we have an urgent matter to deal with you...
Both James and Elizabeth were surprised at the historian's quickness, which seemed to accept no "no" as an answer, and the businessman just stared at the secretary with a wry smile and a deep resigned sigh.
- All right, Mr. Timberley, you and your companions will come with me - said the businessman, opening the door to the office and motioning for the four of them to accompany him to the meeting table where they sat - Now tell me the reason for this meeting, and why you were so effusive in initiating it.
- You'd do the same if you'd waited two weeks and wandered around half the world behind Frank Heartom... - Jacob muttered mischievously, eliciting a reprimand from his sister.
- Do not mind Jacob, Mr. Crevell - Anna said quickly, trying to correct what her older brother had said - He's only tired after we've traveled in recent weeks to Canada, Brazil, and the United States trying to arrange a meeting with Mr. Heartom.
- It sounds like you guys really have an urgent issue to talk to Frank - James pondered with a smirk - Elizabeth already informed you that he's on vacation at the moment and only come back next week?
- Yes, she told us - Thompson confirmed - But perhaps you can help us, Sir. For several years now we have been investigating an old family secret, through various clues left by our ancestors in different places in the United Kingdom and Canada. Norman is a well-known archaeologist and old friend who agreed to assist us in investigations, and our last clues indicate that the secret is hidden in a place formerly called Sugar Island, but today it is known as San Martin Island.
James frowned as he listened to it, staring at the historian seriously and feeling uncomfortable with the fact that the secret of the existence of bears and cousins could be compromised.
- And you've been able to find out what the secret is? - he asked cautiously - What exactly are you guys looking for?
- We do not know, we never find out what it is - Anna said quietly - Our ancestors were very careful about this secret, never clearly speaking what they were hiding. We have only a few clues...
- Lead weights in the form of little hearts, with beautiful poems from some charming hippie - Jacob murmured, rolling his eyes.
- Besides the indication that it was something immense, and that they had the help of someone special to hide it - concluded the woman, feeling the blood boil and just giving the naturalist an irritated glance - As our lane took us to San Martin, and Mr. Heartom is the last living person born there, we thought maybe he could help us figure something out.
For a moment the young businessman was silent and thoughtful, staring at each of those four visitors, trying to decide what to do.
- Why did you say that your ancestors had help from someone special to hide the treasure? - he finally asked, addressing the biologist - Was there anything on the clue that meant that?
- Yes, one of the clues said that "those who are not human, and whose colors make them special, have helped us and hide the secret, for they are also secrets" - Norman replied with a giggle - All clues are made in the form of enigmatic poems, engraved on lead weights in the shape of a heart. Jacob jokes that it was Shakespeare who wrote...
- At least I'm talking about someone real, not urban legends, as you think - said the naturalist with a scowl - From the way you listen to bullshit, all it takes is Thompson and you suggest that it's the Care Bears who hid our secret in San Martin.
- I did not say that - said the younger brother - I said many legends can have a real background, and Care Bears fit this case. But this has nothing to do with the subject that brought us here...
- Perhaps there really is... And your brother Jacob is right... - James said slowly, marking his words and looking in the direction of the four visitors, who stared at him in surprise - And maybe Mr. Frank can really help you with that... When him get back from your vacation together "from those who are not human, and whose colors make them special".
For a moment they all were silent, and the brothers Timberley and his assistant stood open-mouthed at the words of the young businessman, who continued to gaze calmly at his visitors.
- What do you mean by that? - Anna finally asked, with a frown and a surprised expression - Which these Care Bears really exist and that Mr. Frank is spending the holidays with them?
- I can't say any more about that - said the vice-president with a small smile - But if you can wait another three or four days, maybe my own boss can answer your questions, even this one. Come with me, I'll ask Elizabeth to provide you with a special bank loan to cover the expenses of these next days.
Anna, Thompson, Jacob, and Norman looked at each other more and more in surprise before they rose and followed James reticently. But as soon as they left the room, the naturalist walked away from the group saying that he needed to go to the bathroom, being led by a clerk to the other side of the office.
Jacob locked the door and sat on the toilet, but he quickly pulled a cell phone out of his pocket and dialed a number, listening to the ringing.
- "Midletown" - said the voice on the other side.
- Charles, it's me, Jacob - he said in a low voice - I'm at B & H's office, and I've just been told Frank Heartom is in the Kingdom of Caring.
- "What? Are you serious?!?" - he heard the evil businessman shout - "And what are you doing there? "
- Now I do not have time to explain! Ask your brother to confirm this information, and let the General know about it. Maybe the Führer wants to take advantage of the moment to carry out the attack and, of bonus, to settle some accounts with his old enemy...
- "Really, you're right" - Charles agreed after a few seconds - "I'm going to contact Robert and Klaus and warn them about it. Please contact me as soon as possible to explain everything to me correctly. Auf wiedersehen".
- Auf wiedersehen! - Jacob concluded, turning off the cell phone, erasing the call log and quietly leaving the bathroom as if nothing had happened, but feeling in his heart that the moment of action was approaching.

Champ still felt as if a hammer struck inside his head, but his biggest concern at that moment was the fact that he would be tried by the Care Bear Family for treason and bad manners. And it was a very uncomfortable sensation for the bear to sit there in front of all his friends, listening to the comments and receiving angry and disappointed looks from those present. But it was Cheer Bear's angry and odious look that struck him most, for he realized that the female bear could never forgive him for betraying her with Confidence.
Already the fennec was head down, feeling defeated and hopeless, knowing that nothing she said or did would convince Care Bear Family to give it a second chance. No one seemed to have mercy on her, even those she thought were her friends, for now everyone considered her a bad person and should be excluded from the Family as soon as possible so as not to cause further discomfort.
At that moment, Noble Heart and True Heart entered through the main door of the hall, and headed to Tenderheart and Braveheart, who were watching the two athletes so they would not have contact with anyone else. The patriarch did not even look into the bear's and fox's face as the matriarch merely sadly shook his head at his cousin and stared menacingly at the fighter.
- Are they all here already? - asked the horse dryly, looking around - Where are Sky-Heart and Forest Ranger?
- Sky-heart went out on a mission at dawn, saying he'd be at Longbow's house later, and must return only tomorrow - Braveheart said - As for Forest Ranger, you know he hates to attend these meetings, and I doubt he'll come...
- I'm already here - they all heard a young male voice say it in a serious tone from the direction of the door, and really the jaguar stood there, staring intently at the other members of Care Bear Family before staring for a moment in Champ and Confidence.
- I'm so glad you're here, Forest Ranger - Noble Heart said with a little smile to the feline - So you decided to attend the meeting today?
- At least you showed seriousness and commitment - said True Heart amicably - You do not know how happy that makes me, contrary to the attitude of certain bears...
At that point, the beige female bear glared at Champ, who flinched in fear and shame. Indeed, everywhere he looked, everyone was blaming him with words and looks, and he felt increasingly harassed.
Without saying a single word, Forest Ranger slowly walked over to an empty chair and sat down next to Bright Heart and Treat Heart, all three staring sadly. Also the others quickly sat down, and even Grams Bear, Hugs and Tugs were present, called by Noble to attend the session and serve as an example for the two cubs. And with the exception of the Sky-Heart chair, there was just another empty seat.
- Where's Shimmers? - asked Aqua with curiosity - He should have arrived!
- Shimmeringstar Bear will not attend the meeting because he has concealed vital information about one of the defendants - Noble Heart said quickly, glancing at Confidence, who lowered his ears and blushed with fear and shame - We do not want him to be tried for it, and True Heart and I have already decided what to do. Also, our focus is Champ Bear and Confidence Heart Fennec, and...
At that moment the horse's eyes were fixed in the direction of the hall door, where Frank, Fred, and Hector were standing, watching the trial.
- This meeting is private and exclusive to Care Bear Family members, not visitors! - said the patriarch, irritated and frowning - I beg you to withdraw immediately!
Fred just looked worriedly at the boss as Hector took a step back toward the door before the old businessman laid a hand on his shoulder and kept him from leaving. And at no time Frank stopped facing Noble.
- That's not the way we were in San Martin - the old man said slowly and sarcastically - I want to remind you that our constitution allows anyone to be present at emergency meetings or political trials.
- We're not in San Martin, Frank! - True Heart replied angrily - Here our laws are other! So get out of here now!
Frank just folded his arms in a defiant attitude, and Fred stood beside him, as did Hector.
- Get out! - Noble raged - I do not want to have to use the Stare on you, but if it's necessary...
- Do not threaten Mr. Frank! - shouted the secretary, losing his composure.
- And you do not yell at my husband! - replied True Heart, receiving the support of several members of Care Bear Family, indignant at the attitude of the human.
- Let them shout Fred - Frank said slowly, without taking his eyes off the bears and cousins - I want to see if he really has the courage to assault an old man and a child...
For a few seconds they all remained in tense silence, since deep down no one really wanted to attack the three humans. However, the decision was made by the founders, who only stared at the old friend in a rage, before finally sighing.
- Let's forget about that and let's get the trial started - said the horse deafly -
Champ Bear, you're being tried for high treason, for hiding important information from other Care Bear Family members about Confidence Heart Fennec, for having committed disorder and orgies, as well as moral and psychological damage to your girlfriend Cheer Bear. Confidence Heart Fennec, you're being charged with high treason, for hiding essential information about your past, for having practiced espionage, disorder, orgies, in addition to physically assaulting Cheer Bear and tortured Redemptionheart Bear. Are the defendants aware of the charges?
- Yes... - said the two sportsmen in unison, discouraged.
- Add to these denunciations the fact that Confidence raped Champ, since she is an adult and he legally is not yet - True Heart said with a frown - And the fact that Champ and Cheer slept together earlier, the bear betrayed his own mate...
- Adultery was not considered a crime in San Martin - Frank interrupted energetically - It's not even considered a crime in most countries...
- You can stand here and watch the trial, but I will not let you upset our work! - shouted Noble Heart sternly, rising to his feet - These are the charges for which the defendants will be tried, and adultery is among them!
A long, indignant whisper ran through the room, since no one imagined that Champ had the courage to do it. Even Confidence looked at the bear with a surprised expression.
- Why did not you tell me you slept with Cheer? - she whispered to the sportsman, feeling her heart shatter even more - I thought you were still a virgin!...
- I... I did not think... - the young bear began, bowing his head - I'm sorry...
- Silence in the room - said Noble Heart with a closed countenance, causing everyone to shut up - We need to pursue the trial, beginning with a detailed analysis of all the charges against Confidence Heart. True Heart, could you explain why the defendant is accused of high treason, spying and concealment of data?
- Perfectly, Noble - declared the female bear, standing up and looking maliciously toward the fennec - The defendant concealed of us all the fact that his adoptive family is still alive in Canada, and consists of bears and cousins like us, as well as possessing magical powers such as Shimmers, Aqua or Sky-Heart. According to what we have determined, she came to the Kingdom of Caring to spy on us and provide information to these unknown bears and cousins, perhaps aiming for an attack on us in the future...
- That's not true!... - the fox shouted in protest.
- Shut up! You have no right to interrupt it! - the horse demanded with an angry look - Go on with the charge, True.
- In addition to hiding all this information, and having spied on us all this time, she also induced Champ to help her, which characterizes children's corruption - the matriarch continued slowly - These facts were confirmed by Shimmeringstar Bear and also by Champ Bear, in a previous conversation with Noble Heart. And the proposed penalty for such attitudes is to summarily exclude the defendant of living with Care Bear Family.
- Now I ask Tenderheart to explain Confidence's charges of disorder, orgy, and rape - the patriarch asked calmly, looking at the brown bear, which stood up hesitantly.
- Well... It is with some embarrassment that I say this, because I never expected to see what I saw... - he said slowly, looking at the pair of sportsmen - But this morning, when Noble, Redemption, and I arrived at the Hall of Heart, we found Champ and Confidence sleeping naked in the kitchen pantry, the place was messy and there was wine and broken bottles all over the place... And as you yourselves can see, only in him are the effects of alcohol visible. This means that Confidence took advantage of Champ's vulnerability to relate to him. In addition, if Confidence really is 21 as she says, she also committed the crime of raping a teenager, since Champ has not yet turned 18...
- Confidence did not rape me, that's a lie! - shouted the athlete bear, getting to his feet - You can't blame her for something she did not do!
- So you're going to deny that they both had sex during the night? - asked Noble Heart energetically - Or that you got so drunk you might not even remember right from what happened? And that she, being sober, could have avoided all this and refused to sleep with you?!?
- NN-No, I... I just... - Champ stuttered at those questions.
- You're just trying to figure out a way to defend Confidence, misrepresenting the truth again - True Heart replied harshly - That only complicates your situation and hers, Champ Bear!
The athlete gulped at these words, looking around and finding no support from his friends. Slowly he sat down and felt utterly subdued, just casting a sad and shamed look at the fennec.
- Thank you for the explanation, Tenderheart - Noble said with a small smile to the brown bear - What's the penalty for all these crimes?
For a moment the young leader was silent, looking at the fighter with regret, before his expression hardened.
- Penalty of summary and definitive exclusion from the relationship with Care Bear Family - he replied with a sigh.
- Now I ask Cheer Bear and Redemptionheart Bear to speak and explain the accusations that Confidence has assaulted them - the horse asked calmly, as if that meeting were just one more in the Care Bear Family routine - First I ask Cheer to speak.
The female bear was pale with anger and disgust, her eyes red from crying. However, she stared coldly at Confidence with vindictive expression, feeling hatred for what she and Champ had done. All the love she had felt for the sportsman was gone, and now she was willing to do anything to make him and her lover punished even if a lie was needed.
- The other day I surprised Champ and Confidence by talking and decided to make a joke with both of them - she began in an angry tone - But this troublemaker little fox jumped on me and started strangling me, and I think she would have killed me if Champ had not dragged her away.
At that, Champ lifted his head and stared gaped at the pink bear, unable to believe that she had deliberately lied just to harm the fennec. The fighter, however, frowned and clenched her wrists, feeling utterly powerless against that accusation, especially when the other members of Care Bear Family began to murmur condemning your supposed attitude.
- So you mean Confidence attacked her for free? - Noble Heart asked gravely - Why do you think she did it to you?
- Because she could not fool me at all with this false story she told us - replied Cheer Bear, her brow furrowed - Besides, I know that from the beginning she wanted to push Champ away from me, and she hoped that with aggression I was afraid and away from him.
- All right, Cheer, thank you for sharing with us - said the patriarch - Now I ask Redemption to tell us how she was beaten by the defendant.
It was the time of the medical bear looking maliciously toward to fennec.
- It seems our friend fennec does not really have a sense of humor - she said accusingly - A few days ago, I innocently joked with Confidence telling her that I'd love to tickle her because she seems to be very sensitive. However, she did not like this joke and followed me to my doctor's office, where she imprisoned me and tickled me for an entire night without ceasing!
Unlike what happened with Cheer Bear, Care Bear Family's reaction to Redemption's words was to start laughing, since it was very strange to see the female bear who most liked to torture others ticklish to denounce someone for having done just that with her.
- Hey! This is serious! - she cried, frowning - I see no reason for you to react that way! I mean, would you like Confidence to do the same to you as she did to me?!?
- But your testimony is very surreal - said Aqua with a giggle - You love to tickle, but you do not even hold a slight scratch in your armpits...
- But Redemption is completely right! - True Heart interrupted quickly, defending the doctor - Also, remember that Redemption ticklish others for fun, while Confidence does it out of sheer evil!
That was not a strong argument, as everyone knew that Redemption was a vengeful one, and she loved to tickle her enemies out of spite. However, no one seemed willing to fight back the matriarch and quickly everyone fell silent.
- I told you’d were going to regret it, your troublemaker little fox... - the medical bear murmured maliciously as he sat down, staring at the fennec.
Confidence felt her blood boil when she realized that she would not really have any defense rights, and that her fate was already laid out by Care Bear Family. But it was not only she who was indignant, since Frank could barely contain his irritation at that.
- Confronted with the fact that the defendant attacked two members of the Family, the penalty indicated for this is the expulsion and eternal exile of living with the others - Noble Heart said in an accusing way - Confidence Heart Fennec, is there anything you want to say in your defense?
The fighter got to her feet and looked closely at each of the bears and cousins, as if trying to read their souls through facial expressions, and quickly she realized that they all looked down.
- No, nothing I say here would change your opinion - she replied with an indignant sigh before she sat down again.
- You really want to give up your right of defense? - asked the horse in a surprised and malicious manner - It is the chance you have to explain your actions and apologize for your mistakes...
The patriarch's malicious tone made the fennec even more indignant, for it meant that he was not being impartial in that judgment and influenced the other members of Care Bear Family to condemn her in advance. And although his greatest desire at that moment was to criticize them openly for what they were doing, Confidence remained in proud silence.
- All right, since the defendant has abdicated your right of defense we can move on to Champ Bear's case - Noble Heart said quickly - True, could you explain to everyone why the defendant is being charged with high treason and for having concealed from Care Bear Family important information about Confidence Heart Fennec's past?
- Of course, Noble - said the matriarch, rising to her feet - Champ concealed from us all the fact that the defendant had lied about her origins, about the fate of her family, and about the mission Confidence was playing in the Kingdom of Caring. Aside from being silent on these matters, he also aided her in the spying work, which could be fatal in case these unknown bears and cousins are planning some surprise attack against us. And even realizing that concealing these facts could bring him trouble, he remained an ally of the fennec and lying deliberately to all of us. The proposed penalty for these crimes is the summary and definitive exclusion of the defendant of living with Care Bear Family.
- Now I ask Tenderheart to explain to all the accusations of disorder and orgy on the part of the defendant - said the horse.
- In a way, it's almost the same as what I said about Confidence Heart - said the brown bear, looking seriously toward the sportsman - Noble, Redemption, and I arrived in the Hall of Hearts this morning, and we found the kitchen pantry completely messed up, with several bottles of wine broken and scattered on the floor, with Champ showing all signs of intense drunkenness. Besides, he and the fennec were sleeping on the floor, naked and in a compromising position, and did not deny having slept together...
At that point the young leader gave a deep sad sigh, facing the pair of sportsmen and shaking his head.
- I confess I'm very disappointed in the two of you, for I never imagined you would do that - he confessed regretfully - The penalty for Champ for acting this way is his departure from Care Bear Family's activities for a period of not less than five years, being intensely watched during this period.
- Thank you, Tenderheart, I'll explain the other allegations myself - said the patriarch firmly, standing up and staring hard at the athlete bear, who flinched in fear - The defendant is being charged with causing physical and psychological damage to Cheer Bear because they both slept together. We are not judging this fact in itself, for we all knew that the two had a relationship and everything indicated that soon they would constitute family. What we are judging here is Champ's attitude, that after sleeping with the female bear and making her believe that he was in love with her and would always be by her side, he simply left her and committed adultery by relating to Confidence Heart. This is a very dishonorable way of treating a woman, and you all can see from Cheer's expression how much she was affected by it.
There was a general murmur from those present, criticizing Champ for his attitude and giving reason to Noble Heart. The bear shrank further into his seat, feeling extremely embarrassed and regretful, especially when his gaze met Cheer's, whose expression actually indicated suffering and disappointment, but also anger and revenge.
- In light of the foregoing, the penalty indicated to the defendant is his immediate withdrawal from his relationship with the Care Bear Family, for lack of proof of loyalty to those who love him - continued Noble even harder, before looking toward the bear - Champ Bear, is there anything you want to say in your defense?
The young bear stood trembling, feeling as if the weight of the world were on his back. Slowly he looked toward the horse, then at True, Cheer, and each of the people, trying to imagine some excuse or some form of defending himself, but there was nothing to be done at that moment.
- No... - he said grimly, before sitting down again with the expression of someone completely defeated, feeling the tears forming in his eyes as he realized what was about to happen.
- Why does not he just try to defend himself? - Fred asked quietly, nibbling at his lips - This judgment looks like something pre-arranged!
- And you still doubt it? - Frank countered indignantly - Of course it's pre-arranged, and Noble and True are leading the action so that Champ and Confidence get kicked out of Care Bear Family...
- No, not that! - Hector exclaimed in despair, looking at the old businessman with a frightened look - Why is Care Bear Family doing this to them?!? I thought bears and cousins were cool!
- I thought, too... - agreed the old man with a sigh - But now I realize that those bears and cousins I met in San Martin no longer exist. They were just, loyal, friendly, understanding... And here there are only corrupt cowards.
- Now that all the accusations have been duly explained and the defendants abdicated their right of defense, then we can pass on the final considerations - Noble Heart said, looking at the other bears and cousins after whispering with True Heart for a moment - We, the founders of Care Bear Family, urge you to vote for the perpetual ban on Champ Bear and Confidence Heart Fennec to serve as a lesson for the new generations to come, and even for other bears and cousins and adventurous cousins who one day will come to Kingdom of Caring. Let's start voting, raise their hands...
- Protest! You can't lead or direct the votes of the other bears and cousins! - Frank shouted indignantly, taking a step forward - In addition, jurors have the right to meet and discuss the situation before they speak up! This judgment is full of vices, having been conducted in the worst possible way!
- Now enough, Frank Heartom! I do not give you the right to meddle in our affairs! - Noble Heart shrieked, standing on the chair - This is not San Martin, and you are not a member of Care Bear Family to give opinions!
- And you're not God, to judge someone like that! Heavenly, Worker, Caretaker, Edward and everyone else would be horrified if you were here! They would never agree with you!
- And I do not care what they think about it! I do not care what you think! You're only here because you were brought by these two irresponsible ones - and at that point the horse pointed at the two sportsmen - But it would have been better if you had never met us, you old fool! Now get out of here, before I use the Stare on you!
Frank felt his blood boil, and he was controlling himself so he would not punch Noble Heart's face. His heart shattered with anger, sadness and indignation at all those offenses and threats.
- Then use your Stare, you cowardly donkey - he said through gritted teeth, challenging the patriarch.
- You asked for it! - the horse gritted its teeth, stepping into position as its tummy symbol lit up - Sta...
- Stop Noble Heart, please! - shouted Forest Ranger, jumping out of his chair and standing before the patriarch with a desperate expression - I beg you, do not provoke a tragedy! Let me talk to the old human alone...
- No, you'll stay here to give the verdict on Champ and Confidence, just like the others! - Noble replied still enraged - In addition, Frank challenged me, and will receive his punishment!
- I know he has defied his authority, but attacking him with the Stare will not be the best way to act at this time... - the feline continued in a conciliatory manner, speaking in a low voice so only the horse could hear - And my vote this trial will not make a difference, you already know what the outcome will be. I just do not want a tragedy to happen and humans come to see us as enemies instead of friends. Remember who Frank Heartom is, and what will happen when the newspapers report that we really exist and attacked one of the world's greatest entrepreneurs. Let me talk to him alone, and maybe I can sort things out.
Noble Heart was still very annoyed, but the jaguar's calm, steadfast attitude, in addition to his correct arguments, made him slowly quiet himself.
- All right - the horse agreed with a sigh - You're allowed to leave the session to talk to Frank outside.
- Thank you for listening, Noble - said the feline with a relieved smile, before approaching the old businessman - Please, Mr. Frank, come with me.
The elderly human stared for a second at the greenish-haired jaguar before giving him an acquiescent nod as he and Fred followed the Carebear Cousin toward the door of the Hall of Hearts. Hector was also with them when he heard Noble Heart call him by name.
- Not you, Hector - said the founder - You are under our guard and responsibility. Stay here with the others, since your situation is different.
The boy looked frightened in the direction of the horse, before turning to Frank without knowing what to do.
- Stay here, perhaps your presence is important - said the old businessman in a low voice with a friendly little smile, although deep down he was not content to leave the boy alone there.
For a few moments, Hector and Frank looked at each other in silence, before the young Brazilian returned to his place. Then the elderly human cast one last hard, indignant glance toward Care Bear Family, before leaving the Hall of Hearts with his secretary and that greenish-colored feline.
*****
In all those years of searching and investigating, Frank had always heard that the Kingdom of Caring was a magical place where peace, justice, and love prevailed above all else, and that all Carebears and Carebears Cousins respected themselves without blemish. But in less than three days' time, all that beautiful image of the place and its inhabitants had shattered like a sand castle, and the old man had found only anger, mistrust and contempt, precisely the feelings that the bears and cousins said combat in humans. And although he agreed that Champ and Confidence needed punishment for lying about some things, certainly driving them both out of Care Bear Family was the most hypocritical penalty there was, especially since the founders themselves had also created a lie. Besides, he could not forget the odious expression of Noble Heart when he tried to wound him with the Stare, something the old man had never imagined to happen.
For all this, the old businessman felt indignant with his old friends and his heart was eroded by pain. His chest tightened, his expression revealing wounded dignity, and by the time he had finally moved far enough away from the Hall of Hearts, tears of immense sadness began to flow down his face, and he fell into a desperate cry.
Though he had never exchanged a word with Frank until now, Forest Ranger knew very well why the old human was crying. Even he felt annoyed by the way his Family was acting, and his face flushed with shame as he imagined the bad impression they had made on that old friend.
- I'm sorry, Mr. Frank... - whispered the feline with his head down - I did not want it to be like this either...
- First you offend, threaten and attack, and then you want to apologize for your actions as if nothing had happened?!? - Fred shouted angrily, helping the boss to sit in the cloud to cry.
- It's all right, Fred - the old man said through his tears - It's not his fault, it's my fault... I dreamed that my friends would be happy to see me one last time, that this could be a new San Martin... That I could walk beyond the rainbow...
Forest Ranger lowered his head and also felt tears rolling down his face, realizing that the love and trust that the old man had placed in Care Bear Family had broken forever. Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder, and as he looked up, he saw that Frank held him gently, with a faint smile in the midst of the cry.
- Thank you for caring about me... - said the old businessman - And for apologizing...
- It's the least I could do, especially knowing how much you consider us as friends, because only one true friend looks for the other for more than 50 years... I only regret that Noble Heart and True Heart did not correspond in the best way possible.
- Fifty years can greatly change people's character. I just did not expect this to happen to Noble and True either... But anyway, what did you want to talk to me alone?
- Well, I... I just... - the jaguar hesitated at the question - I just said that to get you out of the meeting and avoid an even greater tragedy... But if I may say so, I think you and your friend Fred should anticipate your departure from the Kingdom of Caring, to avoid further friction with the others.
- So you're driving us out? - Fred asked, frowning - Is not enough what you're doing with those two on trial?
- He's not driving us out Fred, but just telling the truth - Frank said, wiping his tears - Nothing we do will help Champ or Confidence, because they're already doomed anyway. And after my fight with Noble, surely the vast majority of bears and cousins really consider me an invader, being willing to do anything to defend their adoptive father.
- That is exactly why I suggested that you anticipate the departure, there is no longer any conditions for you in the Kingdom of Caring - Forest Ranger commented - I promise you that I will keep you informed of what is happening, and I'll take care of the boy Hector. I will also try to talk to the others and make them see that they have acted the wrong way, but I beg of you to leave as soon as possible, not to give cause for more fights. I take you wherever you want.
- Okay, I'll take the offer if it does not hurt you - agreed the old man with a sigh - Come with me, Fred, let's pack up and leave
In a matter of minutes the two humans returned to Flower's house, packed their bags, left a note for the elderly bear, thanked them for hospitality, and again met the greenish jaguar in the cloud car park, where he had set up a large vehicle enough for the two adults to travel.
- I've flown all kinds of flying machines, but never with a cloud car - the old man said as he sat in the passenger seat while Fred followed behind and the cat took the driver's seat - This will be an interesting experience... The last one I will have of the Kingdom of Caring...
Forest Ranger started the car and thought for a second, before turning to Frank with a small hopeful smile on his lips.
- No, there will be others - he concluded before he took off with the vehicle, and for the last time Frank and Fred fixed their eyes on the image of that beautiful and magical place, for they would surely never see him again.
*****
- Ready? Already! - Sage Heart shouted, with a wooden sword in hand.
Love Heart set off for the attack with his wooden sword as well. The old bear stopped him quickly with quick movements, trying to push him away, but the young swordsman was very good, and he tried to overcome the blockade his foster father imposed on him with the fight in every possible way.
It was in this way that both Sage Heart and Love Heart were kept in training, correcting their posture errors during the fights. Most of the time they both wore wooden swords so they would not get hurt, as they did then, but father and son also wore their real swords when they wished to train more deeply.
Watching training, there was Snowy Heart. The white fox usually preferred to use bow and arrow in a battle, so he could not even handle a sword. Even so, he liked to watch the training of others, especially to learn how to fight in a group. And by the fact that he and Love Heart were approaching like two great friends in recent months.
Love Heart soon got hold of the adoptive father's sword and disarmed it with a swift arm twist, throwing away the weapon of Sage heart.
- So, Dad, what do you think? - the green bear asked with a broad smile, lowering his sword.
- Not bad, my son, but... - the old bear looked maliciously at the young bear before using his elemental powers to pluck the weapon from Love Heart's hands while drawing his own sword back and pointing the blade toward his son's throat -Remember that you can never lower your sword before completely subduing your opponent. If I wanted to, I could do very badly now for you.
- I'm glad that's not the case... - Love Heart murmured nervously - I guess I have not learned that part properly, especially when I'm fighting you.
- You train with Sage Heart without considering him as a real adversary, but rather like our father - commented the white fox with a giggle - You have to learn that during a fight there is no such thing as...
At that moment Snowy Heart was silent, and her eyes turned in their sockets. He had gone into trance, having one more of his visions. Sage Heart was paralyzed by that, while Love Heart felt a strong nuisance in the heart. After a few seconds, the three looked at each other worriedly.
- It's with Cassy, I know it is! - exclaimed the swordsman, very worried.
- That was very strong - said the old bear - I can't deny this time, she's in trouble! Snowy, what did you see during the vision?
Snowy Heart was still a little stunned after the sight. It was always so, when he returned he usually needed a few moments to remember where he was and assimilate what he had seen. His eyes widened, he looked at his two companions.
- I saw the bears and cousins gathered, and there was irritation, hatred, sadness in their hearts - began the white fox - I also saw Confidence, and she seemed to be being judged by others for some reason. I saw darkness and dread approaching all of them and much pain and suffering. The rest I could not even understand...
- Heavens, you mean there's something wrong with Cassy?!? - shouted Love Heart desperately - We have to do something! We need to help her!
- But what could we do, my son? - Sage Heart questioned sadly - We do not even know how to get to the Kingdom of Caring to help her.
- All we have to do is wait and hope our sister Cassandra is well - Snowy agreed calmly - But I feel that very soon we will see Confidence Heart again.
- But is she all right? - asked Love Heart still worried - What if those bears and cousins are mistreating her?
- We're not sure what's going on - said the old bear with a deep sigh - Only time, and she herself, can answer that question, and I feel it will not be long.
