Chapter 27

*****

Friday, June 17, 1994...
*****
- Are you sure you'll be all right here by yourself? - Braveheart asked, jumping into the cloud car, while the other bears and cousins did the same in other cars as well.
- Of course you do, you do not have to worry - Confidence replied with a small smile - You said yourself that I can't go with you...
- And you really can't, until you learn to use your Stare - Grumpy interrupted quickly, in the driver's seat - No karate can stop the shadows of No Heart better than the Stare.
- But I did not want to leave Confidence alone here... - added the lion in a worried tone - Do you want me to stay with you?
- I already told you that you do not have to worry about me - said again the fennec, laughing - And I will not be alone. Grams Bear, Hugs, Tugs, Bedtime Bear, Shimmers and Forest Ranger will be around if I need to.
- Okay, if you think so... Now let's go Grumpy! Humans need our help!
- I already know that... - grumbled Grumpy, starting the cloud car and exiting with the vehicle, followed by the other bears and cousins.
- Good mission for you! - Confidence waved as he watched all his friends walk away in their cloud cars.
The day had begun to calm, but sooner than anyone expected, a horde of sinister shadows of No Heart had invaded the world. These black and transparent beings, with two horns on their heads, caused many problems for children and adults, and only the Stare could undo them, or a kindly human who could resist them.
In the past these invasions were more frequent, but for months the shadows had not dared to attack again. It was a surprise when Harmony, who was on guard with the star-o-cope, came out screaming that the shadows were on the active, and the Caringmeter had lowered two points. This made all the available bears and cousins depart to defend humans.
Everyone, except Confidence for not knowing how to drive and use her Stare, Bedtime Bear for sleeping, Shimmers who stayed on guard in the Hall of Hearts, and Grams Bear and his grandchildren, as well as Forest Ranger, who was usually never found in those hours to help.
It was a new experience for Confidence, to be there alone in Care-a-Lot. Even in the greatest moments of crisis she had seen there, the place had never before been so empty as at that hour. All was silent, only the sound of the wind hitting the leaves of the trees reached the fox's ears. Although she had never cared to be alone to train or perform her missions, she felt somewhat out of place, realizing that she had grown accustomed to the company of her friends.
At least she did not feel totally alone, since there were still little hearts, little birds and little stars that lived there, and that they generally loved to play along with the bears and cousins. While the young woman was walking, she was followed by some of those little villagers, who were amusing themselves by pirouetting around her and making her laugh at it.
But neither she nor her little friends had noticed that they were being watched behind a tree. A purple binocular appeared and glanced at the fennec, which had been walking down the road.
- She's almost there, Beastly - Shreeky said quietly, turning to her companion - Are you ready with the rope?
- Of course yes, I trained a lot to avoid mistakes - the bat pig said with a malicious laugh as the girl rolled her eyes and looked back through the binoculars, crouched behind the tree.
Confidence was well distracted by the little birds, which gave them real whirls around them, certainly to amuse the fennec. Never before had she felt such ecstasy of happiness as at that hour. She was so happy that he passed the tree without noticing her pursuers. It was the little birds who saw and tried to warn the girl.
- What has happened to you? - the fox asked gently as the birds tried to signal to her.
- Now!!! - shouted Shreeky, as she and Beastly ran toward the victim.
Surprised by the shout, Confidence turned that way in time to see the two villains approaching.
- You never learn? - she said, with frowning.
By the time Beastly got close, the fox punched him in the belly that knocked him over Shreeky, the two of them rolling to the ground and rolling themselves with the rope.
- What are you waiting for? Go and get her! - demanded the girl, in a shrill voice.
The bat pig got up as best he could and tried again to approach the fox, which smiled maliciously and held herself in a fighting position.
- So, what are you waiting for another punch? - asked Confidence with malice -Come here and I'll love to make you a punch bag... Really, I think you're a punching bag, by the way.
- Of course I am - answered the assistant without thinking - I am the biggest punching bag of... Hey! This is not so!
Saying this Beastly jumped on the fennec, which grabbed him by the arm and began to spin, spin, and spin until he was totally dizzy. When she stopped, she was fine, but the jumbled villain looked like a tottering drunk. Confidence laughed at that, and she laughed even more when his opponent, trying to balance himself, took hold of the fox's arm, who took advantage to give another karate blow that threw the bat pig away, more bewildered still.
But the fennec had not realized that Shreeky had slowly got up from the floor, picked up the rope, and came up behind the fighter, jumping on her back and knocking her to the ground.
- Hey! - Confidence shouted, feeling herself tied - Let go of me now!
- No way my friend - Shreeky said, grinning wickedly as he gripped the fennec's wrists - Now you're in my hands!
Barely tied Confidence's wrists, the young villain also tied the fennec's ankles so she would not run the risk of seeing the prisoner flee or try to punch with the legs to get rid of the captors. Seeing the fox all tied up, Shreeky started to laugh, and left the fighter.
- You're laughing at what? - Confidence asked, very angry - Now you will see who you are playing with...
And she put all her strength to break that rope, for she had been tied before and had been able to break her strings with only her strength. But to her surprise, no matter how hard she tried, she could not even loosen her knots. And the more she struggled, more Shreeky and Beastly, already recovered from the beating, laughed at her.
After a few minutes, the fennec stopped exhausted, and looked stiffly at the two villains, wondering what was happening.
- You can try to break these strings as much as you want - Shreeky said, still laughing - It has been impregnated with a magic potion that makes her indestructible and indivisible. There's no way you can break it.
- That's not fair! - Confidence groaned, regaining her muscles.
- It's very fair - said Beastly, approaching and facing the fox face to face - I can't wait to return all the punches you gave me.
- Are you going to hit a lady? - asked the fox with a surprised look.
- He's not going to hit anyone - Shreeky interrupted seriously, turning to the little monster - He knows very well what our orders are. Now, Beastly, go get our transport!
Quickly the monster pig ran up to the helicopter bike, leaving the two girls alone. The fox kept trying to break free, while the villain continued to laugh at the prisoner's effort.
- What are you planning? - Confidence asked, staring at Shreeky seriously, his eyes sparkling with fire.
- Just take you on a ride I'm sure you'll like - replied the witch apprentice - Not to mention that Uncle No Heart wants to meet you, since you have not met in person yet...
The fennec shuddered at this, just as Beastly returned with the flying vehicle. Together, the two villains managed to put the prisoner in the removable seat, and Shreeky went with her while the little monster was riding the bike itself.
- You'll see, my friends will rescue me! - said the fennec, staring at the villain at her side.
- How can they rescue you if they're busy with shadows of my Uncle? - Shreeky replied slowly and maliciously - He sent them out specially to distract the Care Bear Family, just so we could catch her. Besides, none of your foolish friends will know where you are, and even if they can figure it out, it will take a long time. Now enough talk! Or I'll gag her.
The fox was still trying to sound tough, but deep down she was beginning to be afraid of what might happen. Without the friends to help her, without the Stare to defend herself, and being trapped without being able to use her martial skills, she was truly in trouble. Only your friends could help her. But how could they do this if they did not know what was happening?
*****
When they saw that Shreeky and Beastly attacked Confidence and that the fennec needed help, the little birds, little hearts and little stars flew for seek help, and soon they spotted Grams Bear and his two grandchildren playing in one of Care-a-Lot playgrounds.
- Oh! Hello, sweethearts - said Grams Bear, as she saw the little flying creatures leaping desperately around her, trying to catch her eye - What are you trying to tell me?
- Do you think they want to say something, Grams? - Tugs asked.
- As in those police movies where the puppy tells where the good guy is stuck? - added Hugs.
- Maybe... - Grams Bear replied, looking back at the birds - What happened? Do you want us to follow them?
The little creatures seemed to signal that yes, demonstrating a great despair. The old woman and the two cubs, leaving the toys on the playground, rushed after the little friends to a place where bears usually gathered to play or picnic. There was no one there.
- I think they're really trying to play with us - suggested the little blue bear - There's no one here, they must have been feeling alone...
- They do not seem to be joking, Tugs - said the little pink bear - They're very worried for who wants to play...
- That's true, besides they would never act like that just to call us for a joke - Grams Bear agreed with a worried look - C'mon sweethearts, what do you want to show us?
Immediately the little birds, little stars and small hearts flew in a specific direction from the sky, forming an arrow. Flower followed them with their gaze until he noticed a flying object moving away from Care-a-Lot toward No Heart's castle, and that by the format could only be Beastly's flying bicycle. Quickly the old bear used her Stare to create a colored binocular, which she used to see better what was happening.
- Oh my God! - she shouted desperately, seeing Confidence tied up and being held hostage by Shreeky and Beastly - They hijacked Confidence!
- Oh heavens! This is horrible! - cried Hugs, putting his hands on her face and looking worriedly at her grandmother - Can we do anything to help her?
- We can go to the castle of No Heart to rescue Confidence! - Tugs said quickly.
- Of course not! - Grams answered softly - You're too young for that kind of mission! But I can't leave you two alone either...
It was when she realized there was a cloud car parked nearby, and that Bedtime Bear was dozing on the tire of the vehicle, as he almost always did after spending the nights awake in his nightly vigil. Quickly Flower and her grandchildren ran toward the sleeper bear.
- Bedtime! Bedtime! Wake up! It's an emergency! - she called out.
The bear yawned and woke up with huge rings under his eyes.
- What is? - he asked in a soft voice, annoyed - It's still too early, call me at 10 of the night...
- No, you will wake up now! - Grams Bear shouted, grabbing him by the shoulders and pulling him to his feet - Shreeky and Beastly kidnapped Confidence Heart.
- What? - the bear seemed to wake up to hear this - Confidence kidnapped?
- Yes, and there's no one else in the Kingdom of Caring now. I need you to take care of Hugs and Tugs for me while I go to rescue you.
- Wait, I thought you were calling me to come and rescue her - Bedtime said with a surprised look - After all, you're an old bear and... Well...
- I may be many years old, but I'm not a worthless old woman - resumed Flower, annoyed by that - Now take care of the children for me, please.
- All right, Grams, but be careful - agreed the sleeper with a worried sigh.
After quickly bidding farewell to her two grandchildren, Grams Bear raced toward the Hall of Hearts, as she needed a vehicle faster than the cloud cars, and fortunately had such a driving saved in that location. As she entered the main hall, she saw Shimmeringstar Bear sitting at a desk reading some reports with a very unhappy air.
That really was not the swordsman's favorite pastime, but since he was the guardian of the Care Bear Family, he could not leave the Kingdom of Caring unprotected when all the other bears and cousins set off for missions on earth. In addition, he'd promised Noble Heart and Tenderheart that he would help them put the reports in order, and that's what he was doing until he saw Grams Bear come running across the room.
- Are you all right, Grams? - he asked curiously, since he had rarely seen the old woman act like that - It looks like you going to put out a fire...
- In a way, I'm going - said Flower, breathing deeply to catch her breath - Confidence was kidnapped by Shreeky and Beastly, and I need help her.
On hearing this, the bear swordsman jumped to his feet, looking afflicted at Grams Bear.
- You're joking, are not you? - he gasped - Damn! I was feeling that No Heart was preparing something... I'm going with you; after all it's not good to go alone to the castle of that fool.
- Thank you Shimmers, but it will not be necessary...
- I told you I'm coming with you, Grams! - Shimmers interrupted quickly - It's not fair that I let you go alone, and I can't leave Confidence in the hands of that ice-heart wizard. More than any other, I know what he can do. Do you want me to drive the cloud car?
- No, we're going with another vehicle - Flower said with a sullen look - And since you want so much to come with me, it's better to wear a helmet. Let's go now!
*****
No Heart waited impatiently for the return of the niece and the monster pig, curious to know if his plan had worked and if they had managed to capture Confidence. For the last few days he had planned everything very carefully, to the point of teaching Shreeky and Beastly how they should act to succeed in the mission. It had also been his idea to use the shadows of his castle to distract all the bears and thus leave the fennec alone in Care-a-Lot.
As he paced back and forth in his laboratory, he heard someone approach the door and pull it open.
- Uncle, look what we brought you - Shreeky said, walking in the doorway with Beastly, both dragging the fox by tied arms.
- Let me go! - Confidence shouted, still trying to get rid of the ropes - You'll regret it!
- All right, you're the one who asked us to let you go - the bat said sarcastically, when he and Shreeky left the fennec so that she fell on her belly in the floor.
For a few seconds, Confidence groaned in pain and struggled to stay on her side, with her eyes closed. And when she opened them, she noticed someone standing next to her, wearing a purple robe. Looking up, she finally saw No Heart, whose face remained hidden in the shadow of his hood, but whose red eyes gleamed. With his arms crossed and almost two meters high, he was a terrific figure, who passed hatred, fear and indifference to anyone who saw him.
The wizard slowly lowered himself and looked at the young fox.
- Look, you wanted to meet me and now you're here, in front of me - he said meticulously - Are you happy now?
- No! - Seriously answered Confidence - Now let me go.
- Not yet, young lady - said No Heart, walking away - First of all I want to get to know you better.
- You already knew me enough! And if you do not let go of me soon, you'll also know my karate punches!
- I would not count on that. My niece and my bumbling helper must have already said that this rope is magically reinforced...
- Of course we talk uncle, but she's very stubborn - Shreeky joked with a sarcastic grin.
Confidence huffed with rage, standing low-browed and looking saddened, watching as the wizard walked to a bookshelf and pulled out a bottle containing a kind of stinking magic potion.
- This will ensure that you will not use your Stare for some time until I have the definite magic ready - he said slowly as he took the fox off and tossed the potion over her tummy symbol - I have many plans for you, little fox , many plans... You will help me a lot in my conquest plans, you will be my guinea pig and will allow me to complete my spells to dominate and destroy the Care Bear Family.
- Never! - the fennec yelled, trying to break the ropes, but already tired of fighting, feeling her belly burn a little - What did you do to me? What kind of witchery is this, you crazy man?!?
- It's a spell that blocks the Stare's magic at least for a while. Unfortunately it is weak enough and can be disrupted with the use of star dust. So I've never used it against Care Bear Family, except for a test on some of its members, many years ago. But for now it will be enough, until I create the definitive version that will prevent the use of the Stare forever. Besides... - at this point No Heart knelt and looked closely into Confidence's eyes - Since you have great inner magic, it will be of great value to my experiments, for if they work for you then will be guaranteed to work with others bears and cousins.
The fennec trembled with fear and anger. What she least needed was to have that secret of her discovered and used just by someone like that wicked magician and his followers.
- What will you do to me? - asked the fox in a trembling voice.
- Who knows how to turn it into a punching bag - Beastly suggested with a wry smile - Or maybe you can be our slave to clean the floor and cook...
- Silence, you stupid! You are disturbing me! - the wizard demanded angrily - The first thing I'll do is make sure our guest does not run away.
At that moment, he pointed his index finger at Confidence and, with a quick gesture, pointed to a small cell attached. Immediately an incredible force lifted the fennec a few inches into the air and shoved it into the room, locking the door as she passed.
- Then I'll study how to use your magical powers and your inexperienced Stare to my advantage - continued the mage, looking through the door grilles, with the niece and assistant - And finally test my new potions on you to see if they really will work. Now come with me, Shreeky and Beastly! Let's let this young woman think for a moment.
And so saying, the three villains left the room, leaving Confidence alone. The first thing she tried to do was let go again, but the ropes would not budge at all and she was already tired. Then she tried to get her hands tied behind her back to the front of her body, but she could not do it either. Crawling to the wall, she sat down with difficulty and stared at the door, tears in her eyes.
- Where are you my friends? - the fox asked to herself as she began to cry in fear and anger at not being able to defend herself.
*****
Shimmers and Grams Bear sneaked into the bleak castle of No Heart. Although she had faced the wizard many times, the old bear had never been in his lair, much less knew how to steer by the succession of corridors that were there, a real labyrinth. But she had the firm determination to find Confidence, since she could not leave her in that mess. Besides, she was beginning to thank the fact that the swordsman bear had come with her, since he had lived there for 10 years and knew all the passages and shortcuts like the palm of his paw.
Slowly the two moved forward, room by room, being careful not to be discovered. Thankfully the shadows of the evil wizard were occupied in the earth, and so the place was without guards. But as they walked along one of the corridors, they heard a noise and hid behind an old curtain, avoiding even breathing. Soon came the shadows of someone approaching.
- So, Uncle, how do you plan to use the magic of Confidence in your favor after she's tamed? - the old woman heard Shreeky ask.
- When she's totally broken up in body and soul, I can extract the missing ingredients for my most potent magic filter - No Heart said quietly - Besides, I plan to put her into hypnosis and send her back to Care-a-Lot so that she can destroy the Caringmeter and defend herself with her new "Hate Stare", at least until I appear to complete the service. It will be a more potent spell than the one I tried to use when those two bears, Aqua and Lonesome, challenged me.
- Thankfully I had a good idea of wanting revenge on that fennec - Beastly commented with a small smile - Otherwise, certainly the boss...
- You what?!? - the wizard and his niece interrupted quickly, staring at the little monster with scowling eyes.
- II-I... Nothing, I did not say anything, it was you, you two had a good idea - the assistant answered, sweating coldly, but not hiding a little anger at never having his ideas recognized.
- That's a lot better - said No Heart a little more calmly - I'll get things ready to start taming Confidence. I do not need you anymore, for now, but stay close by when I call you.
- Okay uncle - agreed the girl with a dark look excited - Come with me, Beastly, I want to redecorate my room, and you will help me.
- That's very annoying... - the assistant began in a discouraged tone.
- Now!!! - yelled the girl, making the little monster run madly toward the girl's room, who followed him calmly.
No Heart was left for another few seconds, thinking about how her niece and his assistant had done well that mission, the first that they had successfully accomplished in the several years they had lived with him. Then he went down the corridor toward the depot, where he had stored his ingredients of potions and other torture utensils.
When it was all quiet, Grams Bear and Shimmers breathed a sigh of relief and left their hiding place, staring at each other and wiping the sweat from their foreheads, as they had barely been discovered by the three villains. But their words proved that the swashbuckling mage and the lovely old woman had to hurry, for the fennec was in trouble.
Quickly Shimmers led Grams through the corridors of the palace, being careful not to be surprised by his back. Finally they reached a large wooden door, which the bear opened and revealed to Flower's eyes for the first time, the throne room and No Heart's spell laboratory. In one of the corners was the cauldron adorned with magical insignia, the bookshelf, the throne on which he sat, the precipice in which he made the greatest spells. But there was no sign of Confidence.
- Are you sure we're in the right place? - Flower asked quietly, her eyes worried.
- Of course, that wizard would never put Confidence in an ordinary cell - he said, looking around - And only here would he feel secure in leaving her prisoner, even more knowing the magical powers she possesses.
As he spoke, Shimmers walked toward a side door, which most resembled a cell door, and peered through the bars, gesturing for the old woman to look too. Inside, tied and crying in a corner, was Confidence. She looked desperate, frightened, and with almost no hope. She had certainly struggled to break loose, but she had not been able to, and without being able to use karate or Stare, she was completely defenseless.
- Hey! Confidence - the old woman whispered through the window.
The fox lifted his head, tears streaming down his face, but he smiled broadly when he saw who was calling.
- Flower! Shimmers! - she exclaimed happily, in a low voice - How good that you are here!...
- Do not worry we'll get you out of here - whispered the bear, looking at the lock on the door latch - Grams, keep an eye on whether someone is coming down the hall. Maybe there's a bit of noise here...
Quickly Flower ran to watch the door, while Shimmers took out his lightsaber, and with a quick blow struck the padlock, blasting it to bits with the door latch. With a kick, the bear opened the passage and entered the cell, followed by the old woman.
- Thank you for coming to save me - Confidence said with an expression of gratitude in her eyes - I was so afraid I would never see them again...
- You would do the same for us and for any other, my dear - said Grams as she untied the ropes of the fox's wrists and ankles - Besides, friends are good for these things.
- But how did you find out I was brought here?
- It seems that the little birds, little stars and little hearts are very fond of you and warned Grams Bear, who ran to tell me what had happened - the swordsman explained with a giggle - You owe them mostly, and you can never again complain about the singing of a bird at your window.
Confidence laughed at that, remembering that she was playing with the little creatures when she was kidnapped. As soon as she was free of the bonds, she stretched her arms and legs very well to feel free.
- Now we'd better go - said Flower, as she and the fighter and the bear headed toward the door - The sooner we get out of here, the better...
- And where do you think you're going? - asked No Heart coldly, entering the room suddenly and staring at the three in earnest.
Both Grams Bear and Confidence stepped back, frightened, while Shimmers triggered his double-bladed lightsaber, facing the wizard.
- Of course that's none of your business - said the bear, putting himself in a position of attack.
- I see you're still sarcastic, though - said the wizard, drawing his lightsaber from his waist and preparing to attack - But what matters is that I can finish what I started with you." Shreeky! Beastly! Grab the old woman and the fennec!
Immediately Shimmers and No Heart began to duel with their sabers with tremendous agility, at the same time that Shreeky and Beastly ran respectively towards the fox and the old female bear. But the monster pig could not even get close to the old woman, as she used the Stare to make marbles well in the way of the opponent, who stepped over the balls and slipped uncontrollably to collide with the magic cauldron and faint.
The fennec, however, used its magic to create a real air step and to leap as the sorceress apprentice was approaching, passing over the opponent and landing just behind the opponent, who was shocked by that movement. And before Shreeky could react and turn completely back, Confidence punched her in the face and that made her fall on the floor.
Finding themselves free from their opponents, Grams Bear and Confidence ran toward the door when they realized that Shimmers was in trouble. The bear was an excellent swordsman, and he was able to stop all the attacks of No Heart with his saber. However, the wizard was slowly cornering his opponent in a corner of the room until he snatched the lightsaber out of the young man's hands and kicked him in the knee, causing him to fall to the ground.
- Ah, it seems you're a little rusty in the art of fencing - the wizard mocked, preparing to hit Shimmers in the chest - And you can be sure that you will never challenge me again...
- Get down Shimmers! - Confidence shouted, using his powers to create a large ball of air that threw in the direction of the wizard, who was hit full and thrown to the ground in front of that unexpected force.
For a second Shimmeringstar Bear stood transfixed, gaping at what he had seen, before catching his saber and running to the fennec and the old female bear.
- Are you alright? - the fighter asked worriedly.
- Yes, and thanks to you, thank you - said the bear gratefully - Now let's get out of here before they recover. Follow me!
The three of them ran through the labyrinthine passageways of the castle to one of the towers, where was the escape vehicle which Grams and Shimmers had used to get there. And when Confidence saw him, he could not help letting out a surprised exclamation.
- Wow!!! - she shouted enthusiastically - A sport motorcycle! Is it yours, Shimmers?
- No, it's mine - Flower said, putting on her helmet and handing the others over to her two companions, realizing the fennec's surprise - Why do you look so surprised? Just because I already have a few more years in the back does not mean that I can't like some things told to young people.
Confidence was gawking at that. She had never imagined seeing Grams Bear as a motorcyclist. Her bike was pink, with a heart symbol in front and the removable seat, had a big engine, which gave speed both in the sky and on the land roads.
- I swear I did not think you were that radical, Grams - said the fennec, putting on her helmet and sitting behind the old female bear, while Shimmers climbed onto the removable seat.
- You're not the only one, because I did not even know that Grams had a motorcycle -he joked, buckling his belt - But she's not the only one who has any secrets, is not it?
They both smiled in response as the old woman started the bike and was about to leave. Suddenly everyone heard a loud cry, and less than a second later the door of the room exploded after Shreeky used his magic mirror to destroy her, while No Heart emerged like a tornado blocking the window.
- We got you! - shouted the girl with a scornful smile.
- Never! Hold steadfast! - said Grams as he accelerated his motorbike to the maximum and left with it over No Heart.
The wizard was taken aback by that reaction, and had no time to do anything, only to throw himself aside so he would not get hit by Grams Bear's pink bike. The smoke from the exhaust drowned Shreeky, who did not have time to use his magic mirror, and when uncle and niece finally recovered, the vehicle was too far gone.
- Damn it! Damn it! A thousand times damn it! - No Heart shouted extremely irritated.
- What happened? - asked Beastly, who had now arrived still feeling a little dizzy - Where's the fire?
- Shut up, Beastly! - shouted uncle and niece, throwing lightning in the direction of the little monster, who ran off so as not to be struck down.
Meanwhile, on the motorbike, Grams Bear, Confidence and Shimmers listened to the electric shocks coming from the direction of the castle and looked at each other in amusement.
- It seems that Beastly is getting some electricity in the ass - the swordsman said maliciously - He really is a punching bag...
- I had told him that before - the fighter concluded, and they all laughed as they returned to Care-a-Lot.
*****
Bedtime, Hugs and Tugs were worried, Grams Bear and Shimmers were taking too long to return with Confidence, so the sleeper bear was already beginning to think about asking for help on the radio or even follow to the castle of No Heart. He had not yet done so because of the cubs, which would be alone.
- Is everything okay with Grams Bear, Confidence and Shimmers? - Hugs asked anxiously - They're taking too long...
- We should have gone with them - Tugs complained seriously.
- You're very young for this kind of adventure - Bedtime said with a worried smile -And neither is to Grams Bear, since she's brave, but she's not that young anymore... I should have gone with Shimmers and let her stay with you.
- That's not fair, we could help somehow - said the baby bear, folding his arms - Just because we're small does not mean we can’t help. We've faced No Heart many times.
- I agree with Tugs, we're not helpless cubs - said the female baby bear, also folding her arms - At least we would not sleep in the middle of the mission like you would, Uncle Bedtime.
- It's not like that, either! Now I'm awake and... - the bear began to speak, yawning and then laughing - I mean, at least I'm trying. And I would not sleep in the middle of the rescue, only later on the way back.
The three laughed at that, forgetting for a few seconds of the problems they faced. It was when everyone heard the sound of an approaching vehicle, and Tugs pointed to the sky with a huge smile on his face.
- Look! - he exclaimed happily, pointing toward the pink Grams Bear motorcycle which approaching, with the old woman and Confidence sitting on the rump, while Shimmers was coming in the tow.
- Yeah!!! - the three shouted in unison, glad that everything had worked out.
Grams came down with his motorcycle on the cloud floor and stopped, and she, the fox and the swordsman came down soon after, and were quickly embraced by the couple of cubs and Bedtime, who were very happy.
- I'm glad you're okay, Confidence - said the sleeping man, shaking the fennec's hand.
- No Heart did not hurt you, is not it? - Hugs asked gently.
- No, he did no harm to me - Confidence said, kissing the little female bear.
- Were you afraid of him? - Tugs asked, approaching - And you, Grams, were you afraid of him?
- Calm down, dear ones - said the old woman gently - We'll tell you both... By the way, the three of you, if Bedtime can stay awake. Thanks for taking care of the kids while I helped Confidence.
- No problem... - said the sleeping bear softly, and ended up sleeping on his feet, such was his sleep.
- It's a real miracle he managed to stay awake for so long - Shimmers teased as he helped his friend lie down - Thank God he always wakes up at the right times.
- Bedtime is a nice bear, a pity he can't play with us - Hugs said, smiling - He always sleeps in the middle of the game.
- Ah, leave him alone, after all he always works hard at night and deserves rest," he said the fennec with a smile - And I do not know how to thank you for saving my life.
- We just do our duty like Care Bears - Shimmers said amicably - Besides, we're all family, and one must help the other in difficult times. Surely you would do the same for me, or for any of us.
- Not to mention that I like sometimes to deplete my Stare off a little helping someone - said the old female bear with a wink.
- And what did you think of No Heart, Confidence? - Hugs asked curiously - Were you afraid of him?
- He's ugly and terrifying, is not he? - Tugs added quickly - Did you see his face?
Confidence smiled sheepishly, and bowed her head before kicking a piece of cloud.
- Well, I confess I was a little afraid of him - said the fox after a few seconds - But not as much as I felt when I got here without knowing anyone, afraid I would not be accepted by you. I'm sure my brother would love to be here, especially if it was to help them save me... - she finished with a giggle, wondering how Love Heart would act if it was there and what him would do with No Heart.
*****
There was something that was bothering his chest that morning, something he had felt other times when someone close to him was in extreme danger. But as all his brothers and their parents were home, so there was only his girlfriend left to provoke in his heart such a sense of concern.
Love Heart Bear had always been the most sentimental of the brothers, except perhaps of Guidance Heart and Calm Heart. Even though he had learned to live like a human, having learned even their bad feelings, the bear still knew how to make someone laugh or become gentle with their gestures and their speech. And that has increased a lot since he discovered he was in love with Confidence Heart. From the day he understood this, he tried to express his love for the fennec in various ways, though she rarely returned it with gestures of affection or smiles. She was a lonely, independent spirit, and he was a more familiar, sentimental bear. Even with all these differences, the two really loved each other, and together they felt complete.
However, it had been more than a year since Confidence had left on her mission to locate the Care Bear Family, and she had never again sent word to her family, which sometimes gave rise to concern in all of them, with the exception of Sage Heart who lived by saying that the fighting fox was well and could feel it accomplishing its mission. And as his father was a well-experienced person, the bear decided to talk to him about what he was feeling, going to the office of the old bear and finding him reading a book of spells, concentrated. Gently the boy tapped the door.
Sage Heart looked up from her reading and saw Love Heart standing there, a small smile on her lips.
- Come in, my son - said the old magician, closing his book - You look sad, do you want to vent something?
The lime-green bear closed the door and sat in a chair opposite where his father was sitting, and looked at him with sad and worried expression.
- You really know when I'm not happy - Love Heart commented with a small sigh - I'm worried about Confidence, Daddy. I miss her, I feel she is in some kind of trouble, she is happy and at the same time she feels sad and disturbed by something...
- I know what you feel. I can also feel she's living on a roller coaster of emotions. But we are not sure what is happening, and we can do nothing to help her.
- I did not want her gone, but she is stubborn and did not want to give up her place for me - Love Heart complained - She's a girl who wants to be tough, but deep down I know how emotional and sweet she is.
- But she was ready for this mission, just like you.
- If I was ready, why did you send her in my place? Maybe she's in trouble right now, and we can’t do anything! As much as she knows how to fight karate, she is not good at magic and does not even know how to fight with weapons! Please, Daddy, answer me! This had something to do with my way or...
- No, no, stay calm, it's nothing to do with your courtship - Sage Heart replied with a gentle smile - I'm sure she misses you as much as you feel about her. I had my reasons to send her, and deep down you know what they are.
- Yes, I know, she wants to find out who her real parents are - said the lime green bear with a bowed head and a thoughtful air - She always had this curiosity, unlike me... For me, you are my father and that is enough.
Sage Heart smiled at hearing Love Heart's regard for him.
- Thank you for thinking that, my son, I am very happy for your consideration - said the old bear - I also know that Confidence also loves me as a father, but it is her right to want to discover her origins. That's why we need to be patient with her, especially when she comes back, full of news.
The young bear stared at the family photos scattered around his father's office, and stared at one of them, who pictured his girlfriend smiling, just the day she turned 18 years old.
- I know that, and what I hope for is her return - Love Heart concluded without taking her eyes off the picture and wondering what the return of Confidence would be like and what he would say to her...

Keep your smile just for me,
That I give you the universe in my gaze.
If you feel a chill in your skin
It's my fingers touching you to tell you...
I'm a fan of your way
I'm a fan of your clothes.
I'm a fan of that smile plastered on her mouth
I'm a fan of your eyes.
I'm a fan without measure
I'm a No. 1 fan and with you.
I'm a fan of life.

I want to convince your heart
that my love was made for you
I want to tell you that this passion
finds no other way to say...
I'm a fan of your way
I'm a fan of your clothes.
I'm a fan of that smile plastered on her mouth
I'm a fan of your eyes.
I'm a fan without measure
I'm a No. 1 fan and with you.
I'm a fan of life.

I'm a fan of your way
I'm a fan of your clothes.
I'm a fan of that smile plastered on her mouth
I'm a fan of your eyes.
I'm a fan without measure
I'm a No. 1 fan and with you.
I'm a fan…
Of life.

*****
It was a great surprise for all the bears and cousins to discover that the action of the evil shadows of No Heart was only part of a plan of the wizard to capture Confidence, and that the fennec only came back safe because Shimmers and Grams Bear took all the risks to rescue her. Wish Bear was proud of his companion, giving him a big hug, while Cheer Bear could not stop grunting at the fact that the fox was rescued. Noble Heart, Champ, Braveheart and Tenderheart were the ones most concerned about the incident, but they greeted the elderly female bear, the swordsman, and the fighter for their courage.
True Heart also showed some concern, but in a totally different way from the others. In her mind, Confidence had not been kidnapped by Shreeky and Beastly, but she'd only found a way to meet No Heart to deal with the sorcerer. Maybe this was the fennec's big secret! Certainly she was a wizard's ally and was only waiting for the right moment to reveal to others the truth about what happened in San Martin, weakening the Care Bear Family and allowing the Villain Alliance to act.
In the head of the matriarch, all that made perfect sense, but she knew she could not accuse the fox without proof. That's why she'd expected most of the bears and cousins to pull away from Shimmers for grab him by the arm, dragging him to a quieter spot in Care-a-Lot.
- Hey! What's going on with you, Mama? - asked the swordsman in a surprised tone to be pulled that way - You look like you're late for something...
- It's been five days now, and you have not given me any news of your mission yet - the female bear replied in a serious tone, staring at the boy - I can't wait, Shimmers! Were you able to find out anything about Confidence and her great secret?
The bear opened its mouth in a frightened way, and it paled slightly, remaining silent as its pulse quickened. He knew he needed to give his adoptive mother some satisfaction, but he'd also promised Confidence he would not betray her secret.
- And then? - True Heart insisted even more incisively - I'm still waiting, did you find out something or not?!?
- Well... To be honest, I... - he hesitated, trying to imagine something - The only thing I really found out is that Confidence is an excellent karate fighter. I've never seen anyone fight like her...
- But that does not interest me, I want to know what her secret is! Do not you realize she can be allied with No Heart and invented this kidnapping story just to lure you and Grams to that wizard's castle?
- No, no, she's no ally of No Heart, I can assure you - the bear said reassuringly - Apart from Confidence being very frightened when we found her, I would have felt if she and the wizard had any connection. This has nothing to do with her secret.
- So what's the secret of Confidence? So you've spent the last five days doing nothing to try to find out?!?
- Of course not, I tried. I challenged her to a karate duel, and the prize would be for her to tell me the truth. But... - Shimmers hesitated a moment before proceeding - But she beat me three times, and I could not find out anything.
- And you've revealed to her that we're suspicious of her attitudes? I can't believe you did it!
- She already knew before I even said anything. Also, I thought the best solution would be a straightforward approach in Confidence... Why do not you try this, True Heart? Maybe her secret is not what you're thinking...
The female bear stood silently, looking steadily at her adopted son. There was something in Shimmers' voice that had aroused her suspicions that the bear was not speaking the truth, but she was trembling at the thought that her beloved son was lying.
- All right, you did your best - she said finally, with a deep sigh and still feeling a little annoyed - But if you find out something, do not hesitate to tell me about it, understand?
- You can trust me, True Heart, everything will work out - said the young man with a worried smile - And try to follow my suggestion of talking to Confidence, perhaps you two will be able to resolve this matter without further ado.
And saying that, he got rid of the hands of his foster mother and headed for his house, chest crushed for having to lie to True Heart, and realizing she had not believed his words. As for the matriarch, she also went to her house in silence, wondering why Shimmers would lie and whether she really was not exaggerating her concerns about the fennec.
*****
Sky-Heart was going crazy with all those tickles. It had been two days since he was a prisoner of Aqua, being tickled without stopping, having no moment of rest. His feet were tingling after so many hours being stimulated that way, completely trapped by the ice and without the possibility of defense, and he felt his toes ache with the continual effort to try curling them up unsuccessfully.
- Stohohohop, I cahahahan nohohohot tahahahake it ahahahanymore! - he begged for the thousandth time as tears streamed from his eyes and he shook his head from side to side, struggling to breathe - My feheheheet huhuhuhurt! Plehehehease stahahahap! I'm so sohohohorry!
- I bet you really do - said the sea bear with a mischievous smile, scratching the soles of the guardian's feet in up and down zigzags - Your beautiful feet are becoming more and more sensitized, and you will feel all the ticklishness without any mercy.
- Nohohohot! Enohohohough! I beheheheg! - Sky rested his head on the ice, exhausted, feeling his whole body ache, as those claws tickled his feet without him being able to stop them. He wanted so much at the moment to curl his toes to relieve the tension on his soles, but he could not, and the more time passed, the more exhausted and sensitive his feet became.
Seeing the desperation of the mage bear was making Aqua more and more excited and jubilant, for having managed to beat him and be able to torture him that way. The dolphin calmly rubbed the palm of his furry hands over the soles of the prisoner's feet to cause as much tickling as possible, and then he used only the claws of index fingers to draw circles from under the toes to the heel cushions of the guardian, going up and down.
- My feheheheet! Ohohohoh my feheheheet! - the blue bear could not handle all those tickles anymore, he was really exhausted - I do ahahahanythihihihing buhuhuhut stohohohop to tihihihickled mehehehe!
- You, and especially your feet, are already doing everything I want - said the sea bear calmly, scratching the breasts of Sky's feet - Coochie coo, not to mention that you asked all this attention on your feet, teasing me that way when I was tickled by Confidence. Now be a good Care Bear and keep laughing happily.
- Nohohoho, I'm tihihihired! My feheheheet huhuhuhurt! My bohohohody hurts! I cahahahan nohohohot stahahahand it!
Aqua smiled, pleased to provoke that pain and humiliation in his prisoner, especially when the urine spot in the middle of his legs doubled in size. Sky-Heart felt his cheeks flush, and he just pulled his arms once more trying to free himself from his icy prison, but nothing happened. He was so weak and exhausted that he could barely keep his head up as he laughed.
But it was not the dolphin bear's intention to let the guardian faint, so he quickly picked up the two small blocks of soft ice and began to rub them calmly on the soles and toes of the prisoner, to sensitize the feet again. Sky immediately let out a loud laugh, and shook his head.
- Enohohohough! My tohohohoes are sehehehensitihihihive! I neheheheed to rehehehest! - he shouted, trying to curl his toes as he felt the ice melting between them and also on the insteps, softening his skin even more - I cahahahan nohohohot stahahahand it! My insteheheheps! Mehehehercy!
- Your feet need this constant lubrication to remain clean, beautiful and sensitive - Aqua said quietly, sliding the ice through the mage bear's insteps - Hehehe, never before in your life have your feet been so long immobilized and with no right to step on the floor, is not it?
- Yehehehes! Plehehehease, I neheheheed to cuhuhuhurl my tohohohoes! I neheheheed to gehehehet my feheheheet on the flohohohoor!
- Nu-uh, you'll get your dirty soles again if you step on the floor, and as long as you're my prisoner, you'll have your feet always clean. You do not have to worry about washing your feet, or wiggling your toes, just laughing and feeling your soles being stimulated. Is not that wonderful?
- Nohohohot! - Sky-Heart began to cry out of despair amid the laughter, thinking that her future was to be tickled forever by that bear - Sohohohorry Aquahahaha! Sohohohorry! I beheheheg, sohohohorry mehehehe!
- Oh, so you do not want to tickle your pretty feet anymore? - Aqua asked mischievously, when his eyes began to shine again and he invaded the mind of the guardian bear - You feel helpless, and no matter how hard you try, you can’t get rid of me. Your biggest fear is to stay here forever, and never see your beloved Longbow again. Oh, how sad she will be when she realizes that you disappeared without a trace, and she can never imagine that you are here, being tickled eternally...
New images were rising in the prisoner's mind as the sea bear spoke. They were images of Longbow Wolf crying over a portrait of Sky, wondering why he left, as well as images of him as a cub, seeing weaker friends being tickled by bullies at Edron, while evil hands were approaching his body for torture- it. The bear knew this was just delirium, something Aqua intentionally caused, but he could not help shrieking with fear and ticklishness, feeling like a helpless cub in the face of a storm.
- Hehehehelp! Enohohohough! Plehehehease leheheheave me ahahahalone! - he shouted, closing his eyes tightly, feeling as if he were going to go mad with fear as his head began to spin - I cahahahan nohohohot tahahahake it ahahahanymohohohore! Sohohohorry, I do whahahahatever yohohohou wahahahant! Juhuhuhust stahahahap!
The dolphin bear grinned wickedly as he watched Sk-Heart's growing despair. He then set the ice aside and took the two wide brushes, brushing the prisoner's soles and toes hard, up and down, especially the insteps. The mage bear was sweating with terror and exhaustion, reaching its breaking point.
- Sohohohorry! Plehehehease, sohohohorry! I beheheheg your sohohohorry! Ahahahanything, buhehehet stohohohop!
- Then if I stop brushing your feet, you'll never call me a fool again, and you'll never tease me again? - Aqua asked calmly, still brushing the soles of the guardian's feet - Will you respect me as a strong and experienced warrior, as well as Shimmers, and much better than you?
- Yehehehes! I wihihihill rehehehespect yohohohou! - Sky shrieked, trying to inhale air into her lungs - I'll nehehehever tehehehease yohohohou agahahahain! Sohohohorry!
- And you will be silent about what happened between us? - the sea bear has rubbed the opponent's toes even harder and faster - No one can know this, or you will face even worse consequences...
- Nohohohot! I wihihihill nohohohot tehehehell! I prohohohomise! Plehehehease, nohohohot my tohohohoes!
- Your toes yes, I'll rub them until I'm sure you're trustworthy...
- I ahahaham! I ahahaham! Plehehehease, juhuhuhust stohohohop!
That was all Aqua wanted to hear. Sky-Heart was completely overpowered and would never treat him like a dumb and stupid bear again. For a few more minutes, he kept brushing the prisoner's feet, varying the intensity and speed of each wipe, until finally he stopped and ran his hands one last time on the soft, sweaty soles.
- Good boy - said the bear with a smirk, before pulling out the false claws and holding them in the sack along with the brushes - See you later, Sky-Heart.
And putting the sack on his back, he quickly moved away, leaving the guardian bear on the ice, panicking with the thought that he would be left there alone, in that situation, forever. But after a few moments, the ice melted magically and Sky-Heart fell to the ground, immediately curling into a fetal position, clutching its own knees and beginning to shake from head to toe, crying uncontrollably as adrenaline and fear made it he had a deep panic attack.
In fact, the blue bear could not tell for sure what he was feeling. It was a mixture of defeat and humiliation after being tortured so intensely for so many hours, and he only cried and trembled like a helpless cub, almost as if he had gone mad after all the fear and tickling he had felt. It took him some time before he began to regain his breath and energy, but it would take much longer for him to regain his composure and self-confidence.
Finally, Sky-Heart wiped away the tears and sat on the floor, rubbing his feet against a rock and wishing his soles were not so sensitive, since he could still feel every cell in his feet burning and tingling from the tickles. But more than the uncomfortable sensation of itching in his feet, or his wet legs, it was the effect of fear lingering on his mind that bothered him.
- "I should never have taunted Aqua before..." - the guardian bear thought, before slowly rising still with his legs shaking, giving a deep sigh - "I need to go home and prepare myself to the Fair... No one can know what happened...”
Tears erupted again in Sky-Heart's eyes, while the feeling of fear continued to work in his mind. Going to the spot where he had lost the lightsaber, he took the object and held it at his waist, before walking back home hesitantly, wishing just to take a long shower and to hide under the sheets to try to forget everything that had happened in the last two days.

Hector could not sleep with anxiety, for he could not wait to arrive Sunday morning after a horrible week. If things went well, in a few hours he would be free of his father, who continued to watch over the boy's every step and become increasingly intolerant. The boy knew that running away from home might not be the best solution, but he saw no other way to solve that problem, and certainly Champ, Confidence, and the other bears and cousins would help him later. And so thinking, the boy ended up falling asleep and going to the world of dreams, where new adventures awaited...
*****
Once again Frank read the document he typed in the afternoon with the utmost attention to make sure he had not made any mistakes. Throughout his life, perhaps that was the most important role he had ever written, and here was the future of many people, and never before had the responsibility for a signature been so heavy for that old businessman.
However, it was something he needed to do, and for legal value, he knew he would need witnesses to authenticate that document. That's why the old man was not surprised when Fred knocked on his door at an hour as unpleasant as 10 o'clock at night.
- Do you want anything, Mr. Frank? - asked the secretary with a curious look - I was preparing to go to sleep when I was told at the reception that you called...
- It will not take more than a minute - Frank said, gesturing for his personal secretary to approach - I need you to sign this document as witness, so I can send it to New York tomorrow.
Fred took the paper carelessly, until he read the first sentence of the heading: "Testament of Frank Heartom - June 17, 1994".
- What is it?!? - exclaimed Fred, turning pale - Are you thinking of dying?
- Of course not, Fred - the boss replied with a giggle - I just updated the terms of my testament, and I need two certified witnesses to sign the document before I send it to New York. Elizabeth did it earlier, and if you can too...
Fred was silent for a few seconds, and his stern countenance relaxed his features.
- I did not think you considered me that much, to ask me to authenticate your will - the secretary confessed, his voice tight, signing the document without reading - But I hope I do not have to read it so soon, if I may say so.
- Okay, I do not expect it either - Frank said amicably - I'll leave you a sealed copy of this testament, and you should open it only when I'm gone. I also warned Elizabeth about it. Here are all the instructions on how to proceed with B & H, with my fortune and what more is needed.
- Very well, Mr. Frank. Anything else?
 - Not for now, you're dismissed for today.
Fred slowly headed for the door, but stopped and turned to the old man looking at him with a pensive countenance, before finally leaving. As for Frank, he sat in the chair, feeling much lighter and ready to face whatever lay ahead, even at 90 years of age. And he felt that there would still be many adventures.
