‘‘He told me that her dying wish was that the future King of Matumaini would care for me… Of course I didn’t believe it. She had forgotten all about me, and at one point stopped communicating with anyone altogether. There was no such thing as a ‘dying wish’. So I faced my mother’s death alone, knowing that she had forgotten me, and became the future King’s right-hand.’‘
After three millenia without posting anything TLK related, here’s more! One of the poll’s highest results was DR0, so of course I delivered- I’ve always wanted to explore Matsuda’s world before his mother died when he was still a cub.
His mom was very attentive and caring. She mated with a rogue that did not join King Fuhito’s pride, but went ahead and cared for her son on her own. Sadly, when Matsuda grew to cub age, she started to slowly lose her memory due to a sudden illness, to the point where she forgot her own son. He was kept away from her as whenever he’d try to make her remember that he was her cub, she’d get painful headaches. At one point she went as far as to lose mobility and speech and eventually perished, leaving Matsuda at the care of the then-Prince of Matumaini, Jin, who’d adopt him as an advisor.
While characters in this AU retain their original names, Mwezi (meaning ‘Moon’ in Swahili) is the ‘pride name’ Matsuda’s mother gave him. I still haven’t decided a canon name for her though. While the novels state that Ryouko looks a lot like Matsuda’s mom physically, I refused to make her a Ryouko clone, so I went ahead and gave her different hair bangs while keeping it long regardless.
The title of this comic is a nod to the translated lyrics to Christopher Tin's Mado Kara Mieru, which narrate the circle of life and death.
