I never knew that. I had always figured it was to keep the glass together incase it got broken so there wouldn't be dangerous shards of glass everywhere.
Our teacher in elementary school one year gave us a bogus answer when a student asked...She said it was incase burglars broke into the school at night, it makes it more difficult for them to break into the classrooms from the hallway.
